The present invention relates generally to video stream processing and more specifically, selectively enhancing a video stream with a mirror effect.
Mirrors are ubiquitous in society today and are an important tool for many applications. The “mirror effect” of looking into a mirror, e.g., viewing a reverse image of the field of view of the mirror, is harmless in some cases but somewhere between frustrating and dangerous in other cases. For example, looking into a mirror each morning as you prepare for the day's events is harmless and useful, but looking into a rear-view mirror, for longer than an instant, while driving and attempting to read a reverse image text word or phrase can be distracting and lead to loss of control of the vehicle.
As technology has evolved, video cameras have become prevalent and, in some cases, have replaced rear-view mirrors on vehicles. Designing a vehicle with a rear-view camera instead of a rear-view mirror allows the vehicle operator to glance to a display screen placed closer to the drive path rather than turn their head for a greater amount of time to look at a rear-view mirror. The position of the camera, e.g., at the location where a mirror would be installed also provides the benefit of eliminating any blind spots based on either the field of view of the mirror and/or an operator's glance being obstructed by pillars.
An unfortunate side effect of maintaining perspective and mirroring video images from cameras mounted in mirror positions is a reversal of readable text in the mirrored video stream. A need has developed for the ability to mirror a video stream without mirroring text appearing in the video stream.
According to an embodiment of the present invention, a computer-implemented method for enhancing a video stream, the computer-implemented method comprising: processing, by one or more processors, a video stream; identifying, by the one or more processors, one or more frames associated with the video stream wherein the one or more frames comprise text; marking, by the one or more processors, a text extraction location in the one or more frames; extracting, by the one or more processors, the text from the one or more frames; determining, by the one or more processors, if the text requires a mirroring effect; responsive to the text requiring the mirroring effect, applying, by the one or more processors, a mirroring effect to create enhanced text; inserting, by the one or more processors, the enhanced text into the one or more frames at the text extraction location; smoothing, by the one or more processors, edges of the enhanced text in relation to the text extraction location; merging, by the one or more processors, the enhanced text into the video stream to create an enhanced video stream; and sending, by the one or more processors, the enhanced video stream to a requesting user.

Rather, embodiments of the present invention are capable of being implemented in conjunction with any other type of computing environment now known or later developed.
Cloud computing is a model of service delivery for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, network bandwidth, servers, processing, memory, storage, applications, virtual machines, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or interaction with a provider of the service. This cloud model may include at least five characteristics, at least three service models, and at least four deployment models.
Characteristics are as follows:
On-demand self-service: a cloud consumer can unilaterally provision computing capabilities, such as server time and network storage, as needed automatically without requiring human interaction with the service's provider.
Broad network access: capabilities are available over a network and accessed through standard mechanisms that promote use by heterogeneous thin or thick client platforms (e.g., mobile phones, laptops, and PDAs).
Resource pooling: the provider's computing resources are pooled to serve multiple consumers using a multi-tenant model, with different physical and virtual resources dynamically assigned and reassigned according to demand. There is a sense of location independence in that the consumer generally has no control or knowledge over the exact location of the provided resources but may be able to specify location at a higher level of abstraction (e.g., country, state, or datacenter).
Rapid elasticity: capabilities can be rapidly and elastically provisioned, in some cases automatically, to quickly scale out and rapidly released to quickly scale in. To the consumer, the capabilities available for provisioning often appear to be unlimited and can be purchased in any quantity at any time.
Measured service: cloud systems automatically control and optimize resource use by leveraging a metering capability at some level of abstraction appropriate to the type of service (e.g., storage, processing, bandwidth, and active user accounts). Resource usage can be monitored, controlled, and reported, providing transparency for both the provider and consumer of the utilized service.
Service Models are as follows:
Software as a Service (SaaS): the capability provided to the consumer is to use the provider's applications running on a cloud infrastructure. The applications are accessible from various client devices through a thin client interface such as a web browser (e.g., web-based email). The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, storage, or even individual application capabilities, with the possible exception of limited user-specific application configuration settings.
Platform as a Service (PaaS): the capability provided to the consumer is to deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or acquired applications created using programming languages and tools supported by the provider. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure including networks, servers, operating systems, or storage, but has control over the deployed applications and possibly application hosting environment configurations.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): the capability provided to the consumer is to provision processing, storage, networks, and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications. The consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud infrastructure but has control over operating systems, storage, deployed applications, and possibly limited control of select networking components (e.g., host firewalls).
Deployment Models are as follows:
Private cloud: the cloud infrastructure is operated solely for an organization. It may be managed by the organization or a third party and may exist on-premises or off-premises.
Community cloud: the cloud infrastructure is shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns (e.g., mission, security requirements, policy, and compliance considerations). It may be managed by the organizations or a third party and may exist on-premises or off-premises.
Public cloud: the cloud infrastructure is made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services.
Hybrid cloud: the cloud infrastructure is a composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for load-balancing between clouds).
A cloud computing environment is service oriented with a focus on statelessness, low coupling, modularity, and semantic interoperability. At the heart of cloud computing is an infrastructure that includes a network of interconnected nodes.

Each of the steps of the method 500 (described in further detail below) may be performed by any suitable component of the architecture 300. A processor, e.g., processing circuit(s), chip(s), and/or module(s) implemented in hardware and/or software, and preferably having at least one hardware component may be utilized in any device to perform one or more steps of the method 500 in the architecture 300. Architecture 300 includes a block diagram, showing a security optimization system, to which the invention principles may be applied. The architecture 300 comprises a client computer 302, a video stream mirroring component 308 operational on a server computer 304 and a network 306 supporting communication between the client computer 302 and the server computer 304.
Client computer 302 can be any computing device on which software is installed for which an update is desired or required. Client computer 302 can be a standalone computing device, management server, a web server, a mobile computing device, or any other electronic device or computing system capable of receiving, sending, and processing data. In other embodiments, client computer 302 can represent a server computing system utilizing multiple computers as a server system. In another embodiment, client computer 302 can be a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a netbook computer, a personal computer, a desktop computer or any programmable electronic device capable of communicating with other computing devices (not shown) within user persona generation environment via network 306.
In another embodiment, client computer 302 represents a computing system utilizing clustered computers and components (e.g., database server computers, application server computers, etc.) that act as a single pool of seamless resources when accessed within install-time validation environment of architecture 300. Client computer 302 can include internal and external hardware components, as depicted and described in further detail with respect to
Server computer 304 can be a standalone computing device, management server, a web server, a mobile computing device, or any other electronic device or computing system capable of receiving, sending, and processing data. In other embodiments, server computer 304 can represent a server computing system utilizing multiple computers as a server system. In another embodiment, server computer 304 can be a laptop computer, a tablet computer, a netbook computer, a personal computer, a desktop computer, or any programmable electronic device capable of communicating with other computing devices (not shown) within install-time validation environment of architecture 300 via network 306.
Network 306 can be, for example, a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN) such as the Internet, or a combination of the two, and can include wired, wireless, or fiber optic connections. In general, network 306 can be any combination of connections and protocols that will support communications between client computer 302 and server computer 304.
In one embodiment of the present invention, video stream mirroring component 308, operational on server computer 304, can parse video stream frames and identify text in the frame. In another aspect, video stream mirroring component 308, can create index markers of the location(s) of the text, e.g., a polygon bounding the identified text. In another aspect of an embodiment, video stream mirroring component 308, can extract the bounded polygon from the frame and perform a mirroring reversal on the frame. It should be noted that extracting the bounded polygon results in a blank location where the text resided, i.e., the appearance that the text was erased leaving only the blank background.
Video stream mirroring component 308, can apply a mirroring effect to the frame, reversing the image presented in the frame. In another aspect of an embodiment, video stream mirroring component 308, can insert the non-mirrored bounded polygon back into the frame based on the reversed index markers and smooth the edges with context-aware smoothing algorithms. In another aspect of an embodiment, video stream mirroring component 308, can insert the enhanced frame into the video stream for presentation to a viewer of the video stream.
Each of the steps of the method 500 (described in further detail below) may be performed by any suitable component of the architecture 400. A processor, e.g., processing circuit(s), chip(s), and/or module(s) implemented in hardware and/or software, and preferably having at least one hardware component, may be utilized in any device to perform one or more steps of the method 500 in the architecture 400. Illustrative processors include, but are not limited to, a central processing unit (CPU), an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field programmable gate array (FPGA), etc., combinations thereof, or any other suitable computing device known in the art.
Architecture 400 provides a detailed view of at least some of the modules of architecture 300. Architecture 400 can comprise a video stream mirroring component 308, which can further comprise a text identification component 402, a video stream enhancement component 404 and a video stream output component 406.
In another aspect of an embodiment of the present invention, text identification component 402 can identify text in streaming video frames. In one aspect of an embodiment, text identification component 402 can determine a word, phrase and/or block of text based on optical character recognition. It should be noted that text identification component 402 can enclose the text in a polygon suitable for bounding an area associated with the identified text. In another aspect, text identification component 402 can create sufficient index marks, depending on the shape of the polygon, to identify the position of the polygon in the frame. It should be noted that the index marks can be, e.g., pixel locations associated with a portion or all the corners of the bounding polygon.
Video stream enhancement component 404 can use machine learning and/or image recognition to separate the block of text into independent components. For example, a company name, a company address, and a company phone number may be separated for independent analysis, e.g., in case any of the text is pre-mirrored for proper viewing in a mirror and requires another mirroring to restore the text before reintegration into the frame. In another aspect, video stream enhancement component 404 can apply a mirror effect to the portions of the independent components determined to require mirroring before reintegration into the frame.
In another aspect of an embodiment of the present invention, video stream enhancement component 404 can blank the area of the frame behind the bounding polygon so that when the image portion associated with the bounding polygon is reintegrated into the frame the result is not two copies of the text written in opposite directions. Further, video stream enhancement component 404 can integrate the independent components, with or without enhancement, into the frame at the locations indicated by the index marks. It should be noted that video stream enhancement component 404 can adjust the independent component placements based on knowledge that the image frame is now mirrored, and the index marks may require adjustment.
In another aspect of the present invention, video stream enhancement component 404 can use context aware smoothing technology to smooth the image boundaries with respect to the new position on the frame.
In another aspect of an embodiment of the present invention, video stream output component 406 can receive frames from video stream enhancement component 404 and merge the received frames into a video stream. Further, video stream output component 406 can send the video stream to one or more users requesting the video stream. It should be noted that the enhanced video stream can be directed to specific users while other users of the video stream receive the original unenhanced stream.
