Claims
- 1. A method comprising:
receiving a signal; determining a quality of the received signal, the quality of the signal being compared to a reference quality; and transmitting a power control message, with a selected size, the power control message being based at least in part on the quality of the received signal.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein the power control message comprises a basic power control message and an optional extended power control message.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the power control message requests a modification in transmission power.
- 4. The method of claim 3, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of a request to increase transmission power by a predetermined amount or a request to decrease transmission power by a predetermined amount.
- 5. The method of claim 3, wherein the extended power control message comprises a request to increase or decrease transmission power by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 6. The method of claim 2, wherein the power control message indicates a deviation in the quality of the received signal from the reference quality.
- 7. The method of claim 6, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of an indication that the signal quality is above the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount or an indication that the signal quality is below the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount.
- 8. The method of claim 6, wherein the extended power control message comprises an indication that the signal quality is above or below the reference signal quality by a by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 9. The method of claim 2, wherein determining the quality of the received signal includes determining the signal to interference plus noise ratio of the received signal.
- 10. The method of claim 2, wherein the extended power control message is included if the basic power control message is not sufficient.
- 11. The method of claim 10, wherein the extended power control message is included if the quality of the received signal is above a certain upper quality threshold or below a certain lower quality threshold.
- 12. The method of claim 10, wherein the extended power control message is sent if signal quality remains above a certain upper quality threshold or below a certain lower quality threshold for a certain number of consecutive bursts of data.
- 13. The method of claim 10, further comprising determining a time averaged signal quality for the received signal, wherein the extended power control message is included if the time averaged signal quality is above a certain upper quality threshold or below a certain lower quality threshold.
- 14. The method of claim 10, further comprising suppressing transmission of additional extended power control messages for a certain period after an extended power control message is transmitted.
- 15. The method of claim 14, wherein the period is a period that is sufficient to allow adjustment of the transmission power level in response to the transmitted extended power control message.
- 16. The method of claim 10, further comprising suppressing transmission of additional extended power control messages if the quality of the received signal remains outside a specified range after the transmission of a specified number of extended power control messages.
- 17. The method of claim 10, further comprising including the extended power control message in all power control requests for a data format comprising a large number of data bits.
- 18. The method of claim 10, further comprising suppressing transmission of extended power control messages for all power control requests if the received signal comprises a small number of data bits.
- 19. The method of claim 2, wherein the basic power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 20. The method of claim 2, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 21. The method of claim 2, wherein the basic power control message is transmitted via a dedicated control channel.
- 22. The method of claim 21, wherein the dedicated control channel comprises a signal header.
- 23. The method of claim 2, wherein the extended power control message is transmitted via a shared control channel.
- 24. The method of claim 23, wherein the shared control channel comprises a data payload of a signal.
- 25. A method comprising:
transmitting a signal; receiving a power control message, of a selected size, the power control message being based at least in part on a quality of the signal; and adjusting transmission power based at least in part on the received power control message.
- 26. The method of claim 25, the received power control message comprising a basic power control message and an optional extended power control message.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the power control message requests a modification in transmission power.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of a request to increase the transmission power level by a predetermined amount or a request to decrease the transmission power level by a predetermined amount.
- 29. The method of claim 27, wherein the extended power control message comprises a request to increase or decrease the transmission power level by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 30. The method of claim 26, wherein the power control message indicates the deviation of the quality of the signal from a reference signal quality.
- 31. The method of claim 30, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of an indication that the signal quality is above the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount or an indication that the signal quality is below the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount.
- 32. The method of claim 30, wherein the extended power control message comprises an indication that the signal quality is above or below the reference signal quality by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 33. The method of claim 26, further comprising ignoring the basic power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 34. The method of claim 26, further comprising interpreting the basic power control message with the extended power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein the basic power control message is used to express the sign of the power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 36. The method of claim 34, wherein the basic power control message and the extended power control message are interpreted together as a single message if the extended power control message is received.
- 37. The method of claim 26, wherein the basic power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 38. The method of claim 26, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 39. The method of claim 26, wherein the basic power control message is received via a dedicated control channel.
- 40. The method of claim 39, wherein the dedicated control channel comprises a signal header.
- 41. The method of claim 26, wherein the extended power control message is received via a shared control channel.
- 42. The method of claim 41, wherein the shared control channel is a data payload of a signal.
- 43. A signal comprising:
an optional extended power control message, the extended power control message requesting that the transmission power level be increased or decreased by an amount specified by the extended power control message; and a standard power control message, the standard power control message requesting that a transmission power level be increased or decreased by a predetermined amount if the extended power control message is not included in the signal.
- 44. The signal of claim 43, wherein the standard power control message is ignored if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 45. The method of claim 43, the standard power control message is interpreted with the extended power control message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 46. The method of claim 45, wherein the standard power control message is used to express the sign of data contained in the extended power control message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 47. The method of claim 45, wherein the standard power control message and the extended power control message are interpreted together as a single message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 48. The signal of claim 43, wherein the standard power control message is contained in a header of the signal.
- 49. The signal of claim 43, wherein the extended power control message is contained in a data payload of the signal.
- 50. The signal of claim 43, wherein the standard power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 51. The signal of claim 43, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 52. A signal comprising:
an optional extended power control message, the extended power control message indicating that a signal quality is above or below a target signal quality by an amount specified by the extended power control message; and a standard power control message, the standard power control message indicating the signal quality is above or below the target signal quality by a predetermined amount if the extended power control message is not included in the signal.
- 53. The signal of claim 52, wherein the standard power control message is ignored if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 54. The signal of claim 52, the standard power control message is interpreted with the extended power control message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 55. The signal of claim 54, wherein the standard power control message is used to express the sign of data contained in the extended power control message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 56. The signal of claim 54, wherein the standard power control message and the extended power control message are interpreted together as a single message if the extended power control message is included in the signal.
- 57. The signal of claim 52, wherein the standard power control message is contained in a header of the signal.
- 58. The signal of claim 52, wherein the extended power control message is contained in a data payload of the signal.
- 59. The signal of claim 52, wherein the standard power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 60. The signal of claim 52, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 61. A radio unit comprising:
a receiver to receive a first signal, the radio unit determining a quality of the first signal; and a transmitter to transmit a second signal, the second signal including a power control message of selectable size related to a modification in transmission power, the power control message being based at least in part on the quality of the first signal.
- 62. The radio unit of claim 61, wherein the power control message comprises a basic power control message and an optional extended power control message.
- 63. The radio unit of claim 62, wherein determining a quality of the first signal includes comparing the quality of the first signal to a reference signal quality.
- 64. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein determining a quality of the first signal includes determining the signal to interference plus noise ratio of the first signal.
- 65. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of a request to increase transmission power by a predetermined amount or a request to decrease transmission power by a predetermined amount.
- 66. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of an indication that the quality of the first signal is above the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount or an indication that the quality of the first signal is below the reference signal quality by a predetermined amount.
- 67. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the extended power control message comprises a request to increase or decrease transmission power by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 68. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the extended power control message comprises a indication that the quality of the first signal is above or below the reference signal quality by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 69. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the radio unit includes the extended power control message in the power control message if the basic power control message is not sufficient.
- 70. The radio unit of claim 69, wherein the radio unit includes the extended power control message in the power control message if the quality of the received signal is above a certain upper quality threshold or below a certain lower quality threshold.
- 71. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the basic power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 72. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 73. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the radio unit transmits the basic power control message via a dedicated control channel.
- 74. The radio unit of claim 73, wherein the dedicated control channel comprises a signal header of the second signal.
- 75. The radio unit of claim 63, wherein the radio unit transmits the extended power control message via a shared control channel.
- 76. The radio unit of claim 75, wherein the shared control channel comprises a data payload of the second signal.
- 77. A radio unit comprising:
a transmitter to transmit a first signal; and a receiver to receive a second signal, the second signal including a power control message of selectable size, the power control message being based at least in part on a quality of the first signal in comparison with a reference quality, the radio unit adjusting transmission power of the transmitter in response to the power control message.
- 78. The radio unit of claim 77, the received power control message comprising a basic power control message and an optional extended power control message.
- 79. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the radio unit ignores the basic power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 80. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the radio unit interprets the basic power control message with the extended power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 81. The radio unit of claim 80, wherein the basic power control message is used to express the sign of the power control message if the extended power control message is received.
- 82. The method of claim 80, wherein the basic power control message and the extended power control message are interpreted together as a single message if the extended power control message is received.
- 83. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of a request to increase the transmission power level by a predetermined amount or a request to decrease the transmission power level by a predetermined amount.
- 84. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the basic power control message comprises one of an indication that the quality of the first signal is above the reference quality by a predetermined amount or an indication that the quality of the first signal is below the reference quality by a predetermined amount.
- 85. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the extended power control message comprises a request to increase or decrease the transmission power level by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 86. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the extended power control message comprises an indication that the quality of the first signal is above or below the reference signal quality by an amount specified by the extended power control message.
- 87. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the basic power control message comprises one bit of data.
- 88. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the extended power control message comprises a plurality of bits of data.
- 89. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the radio unit receives the basic power control message via a dedicated control channel.
- 90. The radio unit of claim 89, wherein the dedicated control channel comprises a signal header of the second signal.
- 91. The radio unit of claim 78, wherein the radio unit receives the extended power control message via a shared control channel.
- 92. The radio unit of claim 91, wherein the shared control channel is a data payload of the second signal.
