Claims
- 1. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a longitudinal axis and a reservoir for containing fuel under pressure;
- valve means arranged for selective actuation between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said fuel from said reservoir, and an open position which permits exit of said fuel from said reservoir through said valve means;
- valve actuation means having a depressible portion which is movable along a first direction for actuating said valve means to and from said open and closed positions;
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said fuel; and
- means normally positioned for preventing actuation of said valve actuation means to the open position by positioning an interfering portion to interfere with the movement of said valve actuating means, said valve actuation prevention means movable generally along said first direction in said lighter housing and movable out of a normal position into a second position in which actuation of said valve means to the open position is permitted, said valve actuation prevention means being movable to said second position only by application of a user-applied force directly to said actuation prevention means resulting in a user moving said interfering portion of said actuation prevention means inward, toward the longitudinal axis, to a position out of interference with said valve actuation means, followed by movement along said first direction into said second position.
- 2. The flame producing lighter according to claim 1 wherein said means for preventing movement of said valve actuation means is normally retained in a valve actuation interference position, the movement thereof to said position out of interference with said valve actuation means being resiliently provided.
- 3. The flame producing lighter according to claim 2 wherein the resilient movement of said means for preventing movement of said valve actuation means causes said means for preventing to return to its valve actuation interference position once the valve actuation means is depressed and released, thus preventing the valve means from opening.
- 4. The flame producing lighter according to claim 3 wherein said means for preventing movement of said valve actuation means is a latch movable inward and upward toward a cavity in said valve actuation means until said valve actuation means is depressed, whereby fuel exits said valve means and the latch moves back to said position out of intereference with said valve actuation means when the valve actuation means is released.
- 5. The flame producing lighter according to claim 3 wherein said means for preventing movement of said valve actuation means is a latch movable cross-wise, then inward and then upward toward a cavity in said valve actuation means until said valve actuation means is depressed, whereby fuel exits said valve means and the latch moves back to said position out of interference with said valve actuation means when the valve actuation means is released.
- 6. The flame producing lighter according to claim 3 wherein said means for preventing movement of said valve actuation means is a latch movable inward, then cross-wise and then upward toward a cavity in said valve actuation means until said valve actuation means is depressed, whereby fuel exits said valve means and the latch moves back to said position out of interference with said valve actuation means when the valve actuation means is released.
- 7. The flame producing lighter according to claim 3 wherein said means for selectively producing sparks comprises flint material and a rotatable spark-producing wheel having a toothed surface positioned and arranged to selectively frictionally contact said flint material.
- 8. The flame producing lighter according to claim 3 wherein said means for selectively producing sparks comprises electric spark-producing means.
- 9. The flame producing lighter according to claim 1 further comprising means to retain said valve actuation prevention means in said second position.
- 10. A flame producing lighter resistant to unauthorized use and normally maintained in a latched configuration comprising:
- a housing;
- fuel supply means for supplying fuel to be ignited;
- ignition means for igniting said fuel;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said fuel;
- a valve actuator which normally prevents the flow of said fuel when in a first position and is depressible to a second position which permits actuation of said fuel supply means thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply means;
- a latch being positioned at least partially within said housing so as to normally prevent depression of said depressible valve actuator and normally maintain said lighter in said latched configuration,
- wherein inward movement of said latch enables a tip portion of said latch to become aligned with a cavity in said valve actuator, and
- wherein upward movement, subsequent to said inward movement, of said latch causes said aligned tip portion of said latch to enter said cavity in said valve actuator and places said lighter in an unlatched configuration in which said valve actuator is capable of being depressed, thereby permitting fuel to flow, said unlatched configuration being resiliently maintained, and said cavity in said valve actuator being sufficient in size to accommodate said tip portion so as to enable said valve actuator to be depressed.
- 11. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein cross-wise movement of said latch followed by said inward movement places said tip portion of said latch in alignment with said cavity.
- 12. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein said inward movement of said latch followed by cross-wise movement of said latch places said tip portion of said latch in alignment with said cavity.
- 13. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein said tip portion comprises two tip portions normally separated by a gap, and cross-wise motion of said latch causes said two tip portions to become approximately adjacent to each other thereby enabling the valve actuator to be depressed.
- 14. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein said ignition means comprises a spark-producing wheel and a flint urged against said wheel and wherein sparks are produced by rotation of said wheel.
- 15. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein said ignition means comprises electric spark-producing means.
- 16. The flame producing lighter according to claim 10 wherein said ignition means comprises piezoelectric spark-producing means.
- 17. The flame producing lighter according to claim 11 wherein said latch is constrained to move along only a single path when said lighter is configured from said latched configuration to said unlatched configuration.
- 18. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said gaseous medium;
- means mounted for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir, and an open position which permits exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said valve actuation means including a cavity formed therein; means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium;
- a latch having a finger actuatable portion and a tip portion connected thereto, said latch normally interfering with the movement of said valve actuation means for preventing actuation of said valve means to the open position, said finger actuatable portion being movable inward and then upward so as to move said tip portion out of interference with said valve actuation means and into engagement with said cavity of said valve actuation means only by application of a user applied force; and
- means to retain said tip portion in an out of interference position by imposing a biasing force to said tip portion, until said valve means is moved to the open position and released.
- 19. The flame producing lighter according to claim 18 wherein said finger actuatable portion is constrained to move along only a single path as said tip portion is moved out of interference with said valve actuation means.
- 20. The flame producing lighter according to claim 18 wherein said tip portion comprises two tip portions normally separated by a gap, and said two tip portions must be moved approximately adjacent to each other in order to engage said cavity.
- 21. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said gaseous medium;
- means mounted for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir, and an open position which permits exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said valve actuation means including a cavity formed therein;
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium;
- a latch having a finger actuatable portion and a tip portion connected thereto, said latch normally interfering with the movement of said valve actuation means for preventing actuation of said valve means to the open position, said finger actuatable portion being movable cross-wise, then inward and then upward so as to move said tip portion out of interference with said valve actuation means and into engagement with said cavity of said valve actuation means only by application of a user applied force; and
- means to retain said tip portion in an out of interference position by imposing a biasing force to said tip portion, until said valve means is moved to the open position and released.
- 22. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said gaseous medium;
- means mounted for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir, and an open position which permits exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said valve actuation means including a cavity formed therein;
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium;
- a latch having a finger actuatable portion and a tip portion connected thereto, said latch normally interfering with the movement of said valve actuation means for preventing actuation of said valve means to the open position, said finger actuatable portion being movable inward, then cross-wise and then upward so as to move said tip portion out of interference with said valve actuation means and into engagement with said cavity of said valve actuation means only by application of a user applied force; and
- means to retain said tip portion in an out of interference position by imposing a biasing force to said tip portion, until said valve means is moved to the open position and released.
- 23. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said gaseous medium;
- actuator means arranged for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir and an open position which permits exit of gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said actuator means including a first interfering portion;
- means for preventing movement of said actuator means by interfering with the movement thereof, having a finger actuatable portion and a second interfering portion, said first and second interfering portions being normally in alignment with each other thereby preventing movement of said actuator means, said finger actuatable portion being selectively movable so as to move said second interfering portion out of alignment with said first interfering portion, said second interfering portion being normally retained in a valve actuation interference position, the movement thereof to a position out of interference with said valve actuator means being resiliently provided so as to return said second interfering portion to its position in interference with said valve actuator when said valve actuator is released, thus preventing said valve means from opening,
- wherein said movement of said finger actuatable portion which causes said second interfering portion to move out of alignment with said first interfering portion comprises movement first in an inward direction and then movement in an upward direction; and
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium.
- 24. The flame producing lighter according to claim 23 wherein said movement of said finger actuatable portion which causes said second interfering portion to move out of alignment with said first interfering portion is constrained to movement in a single path.
- 25. The flame producing lighter according to claim 23 further comprising means for retaining said second interfering portion out of alignment with said first interfering portion.
- 26. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling flow of said gaseous medium;
- actuator means arranged for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir and an open position which permits exit of gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said actuator means including a first interfering portion;
- means for preventing movement of said actuator means by interfering with the movement thereof, having a finger actuatable portion and a second interfering portion, said first and second interfering portions being normally in alignment with each other thereby preventing movement of said actuator means, said finger actuatable portion being selectively movable so as to move said second interfering portion out of alignment with said first interfering portion, said second interfering portion being normally retained in a valve actuation interference position, the movement thereof to a position out of interference with said valve actuator means being resiliently provided so as to return said second interfering portion to its position in interference with said valve actuator when said valve actuator is released, thus preventing said valve means from opening,
- wherein said movement of said finger actuatable portion which causes said second interfering portion to move out of alignment with said first interfering portion comprises movement first in a cross-wise direction, then in an inward direction and then in upward direction; and
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium.
- 27. A flame producing lighter which comprises:
- a housing defining a reservoir for containing a combustible gaseous medium under pressure;
- valve means for controlling flow Of said gaseous medium;
- actuator means arranged for selective actuation of said valve means between a normally closed position which prevents exit of said gaseous medium from said reservoir and an open position which permits exit of gaseous medium from said reservoir through said valve means, said actuator means including a first interfering portion;
- means for preventing movement Of said actuator means by interfering with the movement thereof, having a finger actuatable portion and a second interfering portion, said first and second interfering portions being normally in alignment with each other thereby preventing movement of said actuator means, said finger actuatable portion being selectively movable so as to move said second interfering portion out of alignment with said first interfering portion, said second interfering portion being normally retained in a valve actuation interference position, the movement thereof to a position out of interference with said valve actuator means being resiliently provided so as to return said second interfering portion to its position in interference with said valve actuator when said valve actuator is released, thus preventing said valve means from opening,
- wherein said movement of said finger actuatable portion which causes said second interfering portion to move out of alignment with said first interfering portion comprises movement first in an inward direction, then in a cross-wise direction and then in an upward direction; and
- means for selectively producing sparks at a location proximate a gaseous medium exit opening of said valve means thereby selectively causing ignition of said gaseous medium.
- 28. A fuel cut-off mechanism for use in combination with a lighter which comprises:
- means for normally preventing actuation of a fuel supply;
- means for selectively permitting actuation of said fuel supply including a depressible valve actuator which upon depression actuates said fuel supply thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply; and
- a latch which normally interferes with depression of said depressible valve actuator, at least a portion of said latch being normally positioned between at least a portion of said valve actuator and at least a portion of a main body housing of said lighter so as to normally interfere with depression of said valve actuator, said latch being arranged such that inward movement of said latch provides a void between at least a portion of said valve actuator and at least a portion of said latch, the void being sufficient in size to enable upward movement of said latch, subsequent to said inward movement, into an unlatched position in which said latch is resiliently maintained, thereby placing said lighter in an unlatched configuration wherein said valve actuator is capable of being depressed thereby permitting fuel to flow.
- 29. The fuel cut-off mechanism of claim 28 further comprising means for constraining said movement of said latch to a single path equally suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users.
- 30. The fuel cut-off mechanism of claim 28 further comprising means for retaining said lighter in said unlatched configuration.
- 31. A fuel cut-off mechanism for use in combination with a lighter comprising:
- (a) means for normally preventing actuation of a fuel supply; and
- (b) means for selectively permitting actuation of said fuel supply, such selective actuation of said fuel supply and a corresponding production of sparks by spark-producing means causing fuel from said fuel supply to be ignited, said actuation permitting means including:
- (i) a depressable valve actuator which, upon depression, actuates said fuel supply thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply; and
- (ii) a latch which normally prevents depression of said depressable valve actuator, at least a portion of said latch being normally positioned between said valve actuator and a main body housing of said lighter thereby preventing depression of said valve actuator,
- wherein inward movement of said latch provides a void between said valve actuator and said a portion of a main body housing, said void being sufficient in size to enable said valve actuator to be depressed at least partially into said void, and wherein upward movement, subsequent to said inward movement, of said latch toward a position at least partially into said void, said position being resiliently maintained, provides said lighter in an unlatched configuration in which said valve actuator is capable of being depressed, thereby permitting fuel to flow.
- 32. The fuel cut-off mechanism of claim 31 further comprising means for retaining said lighter in said unlatched configuration.
- 33. The fuel cut-off mechanism of claim 31 wherein said latch comprises two tip portions normally separated by a gap, and at least one of said two tip portions must be moved by an external force such that said two tip portions become approximately adjacent to each other in order for said tip portions to enter said void.
- 34. The fuel cut-off mechanism of claim 31 further comprising means for constraining said movement of said latch to a single path equally suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users.
- 35. A flame developing lighter comprising:
- (a) a housing;
- (b) fuel supply means for supplying fuel to be ignited;
- (c) ignition means for igniting said fuel;
- (d) valve means for selectively permitting flow of said fuel; and
- (e) means for selectively unlatching said lighter from a normally latched configuration in which fuel is prevented from flowing, said means for selectively unlatching said lighter including:
- (i) a valve actuator which normally prevents escape of fuel from said fuel supply when in a first position and is depressable to a second position which permits actuation of said fuel supply means thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply means; and
- (ii) a latch which normally prevents depression of said depressable valve actuator, said latch having an interfering portion being normally positioned in alignment with an interfering portion of said valve actuator thereby preventing depression of said valve actuator,
- wherein inward movement of said interfering portion of said latch moves said interfering portion of said latch out of alignment with said interfering portion of said valve actuator, and wherein upward movement, subsequent to said inward movement, of said latch toward a position at least partially adjacent to at least part of said valve actuator, said position being resiliently maintained, provides said lighter in an unlatched configuration in which said valve actuator is capable of being depressed, thereby permitting fuel to flow.
- 36. The flame developing lighter according to claim 35 wherein said ignition means comprises a spark-producing wheel and a flint urged against said wheel and wherein sparks are produced by rotation of said wheel.
- 37. The flame developing lighter according to claim 35 wherein said ignition means comprises electric spark-producing means.
- 38. The flame developing lighter according to claim 35 wherein said ignition means comprises piezoelectric spark-producing means.
- 39. The flame developing lighter of claim 35 further comprising means for retaining said lighter in said unlatched configuration.
- 40. The flame developing lighter of claim 35 further comprising means for constraining said movement of said latch to a single path equally suitable for both right-handed and left-handed users.
- 41. A flame developing lighter comprising:
- (a) a housing;
- (b) fuel supply means for supplying fuel to be ignited;
- (c) ignition means for igniting said fuel;
- (d) valve means for selectively permitting flow of said fuel; and
- (e) control means for preventing the combination of production of fuel flow and spark generation so as to prevent production of a flame and for permitting substantially simultaneous production of fuel flow and spark generation to produce a flame, said control means including:
- (i) a valve actuator which normally prevents escape of said fuel from said fuel supply means when in a first position and is depressible to a second position which permits actuation of said fuel supply means thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply means, said valve actuator having a cavity formed therein; and
- (ii) a latch having an interfering portion which is normally in an interfering position thereby preventing depression of said depressible valve actuator,
- wherein inward movement of said latch causes said interfering portion to move to a non-interfering position in which said valve actuator may be depressed, and wherein upward movement, subsequent to said inward movement, of said latch into another non-interfering position, said another non-interfering position being resiliently maintained, provides said lighter in an unlatched configuration in which said valve actuator is capable of being depressed, thereby permitting fuel to flow.
- 42. The flame developing lighter according to claim 41 wherein said ignition means comprises a spark-producing wheel and a flint urged against said wheel and wherein sparks are produced by rotation of said wheel.
- 43. The flame developing lighter according to claim 41 wherein said ignition means comprises electric spark-producing means.
- 44. The flame developing lighter according to claim 41 wherein said ignition means comprises piezoelectric spark-producing means.
- 45. The flame developing lighter of claim 41 wherein movement of said latch is limited to movement in a single path.
- 46. The flame developing lighter of claim 41 further comprising means for retaining said lighter in said unlatched configuration.
- 47. A flame developing lighter comprising:
- (a) a housing defining a longitudinal axis;
- (b) fuel supply means for supplying fuel to be ignited;
- (c) ignition means for igniting said fuel;
- (d) valve means for selectively permitting flow of said fuel; and
- (e) control means for preventing the combination of production of fuel flow and spark generation so as to prevent production of a flame and for permitting production of fuel flow and spark generation to produce a flame, said control means including:
- (i) a valve actuator which normally prevents escape of said fuel from said fuel supply means when in a first position and is depressible to a second position which permits actuation of said fuel supply means thereby permitting fuel to flow out from said fuel supply means, said valve actuator having a cavity formed therein; and
- (ii) a latch having an interfering portion which is normally in an interfering position thereby preventing depression of said depressible valve actuator,
- wherein movement of said latch in a first direction followed by movement of said latch in a second direction causes said interfering portion to move to a non-interfering position in which said valve actuator may be depressed, and wherein further movement in a third direction, subsequent to said first and second movements, of said latch into another non-interfering position, at least one of said directions being along the longitudinal axis, said another non-interfering position being resiliently maintained, provides said lighter in an unlatched configuration in which said valve actuator is capable of being depressed, thereby permitting fuel to flow.
- 48. The flame developing lighter of claim 47 wherein movement of said latch is limited to movement in a single path.
- 49. The flame developing lighter of claim 47 further comprising means for retaining said lighter in said unlatched configuration.
- 50. The flame developing lighter of claim 47 wherein said first direction is cross-wise, said second direction is inward and said third direction is upward.
- 51. The flame developing lighter of claim 47 wherein said first direction is inward, said second direction is cross-wise and said third direction is upward.
- 52. The flame developing lighter of claim 47 wherein said interfering portion comprises two tip portions normally separated by a gap, and wherein said cross-wise movement causes said tip portions to become approximately adjacent to each other so as to enable said valve actuator to be depressed.
- 53. A lighter comprising:
- a housing;
- fuel supply means for supplying fuel to be ignited;
- ignition means for igniting said fuel;
- valve means for controlling the flow of said fuel;
- a valve actuator having valve actuator first and valve actuator second positions, in said valve actuator first position said valve actuator allowing fuel to flow out from said fuel supply means, and in said valve actuator second position said valve actuator preventing fuel from flowing out from said fuel supply means;
- a latch movable inward and then upward with respect to said lighter from a latch first position to a latch second position, wherein said valve actuator is prevented from moving from its valve actuator second position to its valve actuator first position when said latch is in its latch first position.
- 54. A flame producing lighter, comprising:
- a housing having a central longitudinal axis and defining a reservoir to contain fuel under pressure;
- a valve mounted on the housing and communicating with the reservoir, said valve selectively actuatable between a closed position which prevents exit of fuel from the reservoir, and an open position which permits exit of fuel from the reservoir through said valve;
- a valve actuator mounted on the housing and cooperating with the valve, said actuator having a depressible portion which is depressible along a first direction to actuate the valve to and from said open and closed positions;
- a spark producing assembly mounted on the housing such that sparks may be produced by a user at a location proximate the fuel exit from the valve thereby selectively causing ignition of the fuel; and
- a latch member mounted in the housing moveable between latched and unlatched positions, said latched position comprising an interfering portion of the latch member disposed between the valve actuator and the housing to block depression of the valve actuator, wherein inward movement of the latch member and said interfering portion towards the longitudinal axis by application of a user-applied force directly to said latch member places the interfering portion in a position permitting depression of the valve actuator and wherein subsequent movement of the latch member along the first direction places the latch number in the unlatched position.
- 55. The lighter according to claim 54, wherein the latch member engages a portion of the lighter in the unlatched position and is retained in said unlatched position by said engagement without further user applied force until the valve actuator is depressed and released by the user.
