Claims
- 1. A combination for controlling the flow of a fluid in a conduit, comprising:
a plurality of flow restriction devices disposed within said conduit; a control device disposed within said conduit and operable to one of enable or disable at least one of said plurality of flow restriction devices.
- 2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said plurality of flow restriction devices are one of check-valves and duckbill valves.
- 3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said plurality of flow restriction devices are serially disposed within said conduit.
- 4. The combination of claim 1 wherein said control device includes a pin having an elongated rod end and a spherical end, said rod end being operable to one of enable or disable at least one of said plurality of flow restriction devices and said spherical end being operable to prevent said control pin from passing through said plurality of flow restriction devices.
- 5. The combination of claim 1 wherein said control device is hollow.
- 6. The combination of claim 1 wherein said each of said plurality of flow restriction devices has a differential pressure associated therewith, each of said differential pressures being substantially equal.
- 7. The combination of claim 1 wherein said each of said plurality of flow restriction devices has a standoff.
- 8. The combination of claim 1 wherein at least one end of said conduit is connected to a cell of a cushioning system.
- 9. A cushioning system, comprising:
a plurality of cushioning cells; a fluid located within certain of said cells; a plurality of conduits defining a fluid path interconnecting said plurality of cells; a plurality of constrictures located in said fluid path to control at least a portion of the flow rate between said cells; and a control device operable to one of enable or disable at least one of said plurality of constrictures.
- 10. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said plurality of constrictures allows unidirectional flow of said fluid.
- 11. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein at least one of said plurality of constrictures includes valves.
- 12. The cushioning system of claim 11, wherein said valves include at least one of a duckbill-shaped valve and a check-valve.
- 13. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said plurality of conduits is of uniform diameter.
- 14. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said plurality of conduits is of varying diameter.
- 15. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein the shape of said cushioning cells is selected from the group consisting of semi-cubical, hexagonal, cylindrical and combinations thereof.
- 16. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said plurality of cushioning cells is of uniform height.
- 17. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said plurality of cushioning cells is of varying height.
- 18. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said fluid is selected from the group consisting of gas, liquid, gel and mixtures thereof.
- 19. The cushioning system of claim 9, wherein said fluid is air.
- 20. A method of supporting weight in a system of the type having a plurality of flexible walled cells interconnected by a plurality of conduits having a plurality of flow restriction devices, comprising:
setting a maximum allowable differential pressure between each of said plurality of cells; and enabling a fluid to flow between said cells in the event any of said maximum allowable differential pressures are exceeded.
- 21. The method of claim 20 wherein said setting step further comprises at least one of enabling and disabling one or more of said plurality of flow restriction devices.
- 22. A method for controlling the flow of a fluid between a plurality of cells interconnected by a plurality of conduits having one or more flow restriction devices serially disposed therein, the method comprising:
adjusting the position of a control device relative to said plurality of flow restriction devices, said control device being operable for one of enabling and disabling said one or more flow restriction devices.
- 23. The method of claim 22 wherein at least one of said flow restriction devices is a check-valve and wherein said adjusting further comprises:
adjusting the position of a control pin for one of enabling and disabling a checking function of said check-valve.
