Claims
- 1. An article comprising melt-formed continuous filaments intermingled to form a porous web wherein said filaments are cohered to each other at multiple contact points, wherein said web is in a substantially amorphous disordered state and wherein said filaments comprise at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component covalently bonded to or blended with at least one amorphous polymeric component.
- 2. An article according to claim 1 wherein the at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component is covalently bonded to the at least one amorphous polymeric component.
- 3. An article according to claim 2 wherein the components comprise a block copolymer.
- 4. An article according to claim 3 wherein the at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component is poly(glycolide) and the at least one amorphous polymeric component is poly(trimethylene carbonate).
- 5. An article according to claim 1 wherein the at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component is blended with the at least one amorphous polymeric component.
- 6. An article according to claim 5 wherein at least one of the components is a block copolymer.
- 7. The article of claim 1 comprising an implantable article.
- 8. The article of claim 7 which is proportioned for guided tissue regeneration.
- 9. The article of claim 1 wherein at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component has a melting point of greater than 80° C.
- 10. The article of claim 1 wherein the web has a density of greater than 120 g/m2.
- 11. The article of claim 1 wherein the web is bioresorbable.
- 12. The article of claim 11 wherein the web has single bioresorption time.
- 13. The article of claim 1 wherein the web is a shaped form.
- 14. An article of claim 1 wherein said article incorporates at least one bioactive agent with the filaments of the web.
- 15. An article of claim 14 wherein said at least one bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of osteoconductive substances, osteoinductive substances, growth factors, chemotactic factors, morphogens, pharmaceuticals, proteins, peptides and biologically active molecules of autogenic, allogenic, xenogenic or recombinant origin.
- 16. An article of claim 14 wherein said at least one bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of transforming growth factor beta, bone morphogenic proteins, osteogenic proteins, antibiotics, antimicrobials, vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, platelet derived growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, insulin and immunoglobulin type G antibodies.
- 17. An article of claim 14 wherein said at least one bioactive agent comprises an antibiotic.
- 18. An article of claim 14 wherein said at least one bioactive agent comprises an antimicrobial.
- 19. An article of claim 1 comprising a continuous filament non-woven web wherein the fully ordered, crystallized web possesses, without requisite for added adhesive binders, adjuncts, or post-extrusion melt processing, cohesive shear strength exceeding 0.8 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 20. An article of claim 19 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.0 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 21. An article of claim 19 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.2 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 22. An article of claim 19 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.4 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 23. A process which comprises:
a) forming the article of claim 1 into a desired shape, b) implanting the shape into a mammalian subject, and c) causing the implanted shape to harden.
- 24. A process which comprises:
a) forming the article of claim 1 into a desired shape, b) causing the shape to harden, and c) implanting the hardened shape into a mammalian subject.
- 25. An article comprising melt-formed continuous filaments intermingled to form a porous web wherein said filaments are cohered to each other at multiple contact points, wherein said web is in a substantially amorphous disordered state and wherein said filaments comprise a first semi-crystalline polymeric component covalently bonded to or blended with at least one additional semi-crystalline polymeric component.
- 26. An article according to claim 25 wherein the first semi-crystalline polymeric component is covalently bonded to the at least one additional semi-crystalline component.
- 27. An article according to claim 26 wherein the components comprise a block copolymer.
- 28. An article according to claim 25 wherein the first semi-crystalline polymeric component is blended with the at least one additional semi-crystalline component.
- 29. An article according to claim 28 wherein at least one of the components is a block copolymer.
- 30. The article of claim 25 comprising an implantable article.
- 31. The article of claim 30 which is proportioned for guided tissue regeneration.
- 32. The article of claim 25 wherein at least one semi-crystalline polymeric component has a melting point of greater than 80° C.
- 33. The article of claim 25 wherein the web has a density of greater than 120 g/m2.
- 34. The article of claim 25 wherein the web is bioresorbable.
- 35. The article of claim 34 wherein the web has single bioresorption time.
- 36. The article of claim 25 wherein the web is a shaped form.
- 37. An article of claim 25 wherein said article incorporates at least one bioactive agent with the filaments of the web.
- 38. An article of claim 37 wherein said at least one bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of osteoconductive substances, osteoinductive substances, growth factors, chemotactic factors, morphogens, pharmaceuticals, proteins, peptides and biologically active molecules of autogenic, allogenic, xenogenic or recombinant origin.
- 39. An article of claim 37 wherein said at least one bioactive agent is selected from the group consisting of transforming growth factor beta, bone morphogenic proteins, osteogenic proteins, antibiotics, antimicrobials, vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, platelet derived growth factor, insulin-like growth factor, insulin and immunoglobulin type G antibodies.
- 40. An article of claim 37 wherein said at least one bioactive agent comprises an antibiotic.
- 41. An article of claim 37 wherein said at least one bioactive agent comprises an antimicrobial.
- 42. An article of claim 25 comprising a continuous filament non-woven web wherein the fully ordered, crystallized web possesses, without requisite for added adhesive binders, adjuncts, or post-extrusion melt processing, cohesive shear strength exceeding 0.8 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 43. An article of claim 42 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.0 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 44. An article of claim 42 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.2 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 45. An article of claim 42 wherein the web possesses cohesive shear strength exceeding 1.4 megapascals when tension loaded in shear as a lap-shear sandwich joint.
- 46. A process which comprises:
a) forming the article of claim 25 into a desired shape, b) implanting the shape into a mammalian subject, and c) causing the implanted shape to harden.
- 47. A process which comprises:
a) forming the article of claim 25 into a desired shape, b) causing the shape to harden, and c) implanting the hardened shape into a mammalian subject.
