Claims
- 1. A rotary lawn mower, comprising a housing, power means mounted on the housing and including a drive shaft, wheel means connected to the housing to permit the housing to be moved over the ground, rotatable means disposed within the housing, said rotatable means including an annular member journalled about the drive shaft, and a cutting blade carried by said annular member, clutch means interconnecting the drive shaft and the annular member and having an engaged position wherein the annular member and the cutter blade are drivingly connected to said drive shaft and having a disengaged position wherein said annular member and said cutter blade are disconnected from said drive shaft, clutch disengaging means for disengaging said clutch means to disconnect the annular member and the cutter blade from the drive shaft, and brake means operable in conjunction with operation of said clutch disengaging means for engaging said rotatable means and stopping rotation of said cutting blade on disengagement of said clutch means.
- 2. The lawn mower of claim 1, wherein said clutch means includes a first clutch member secured to said drive shaft and a second clutch member secured to said annular member, and biasing means for biasing the clutch members toward the engaged position.
- 3. The lawn mower of claim 2, wherein said first and second clutch members are disposed concentrically with the drive shaft, and said clutch disengaging means is operable to move one of said clutch members axially of the shaft to thereby disengage said clutch means.
- 4. A rotary lawn mower, comprising a housing, power means mounted on the housing and including a drive shaft directly connected to the power means, wheel means connected to the housing to permit the housing to be moved over the ground, rotatable means disposed within the housing and including an annular member journalled about the drive shaft and a cutting blade carried by said annular member, clutch means interconnecting the drive shaft and the annular member and having an engaged position wherein the annular member and the cutting blade are drivingly connected to the drive shaft and having a disengaged position wherein said annular member and said cutting blade are disconnected from said drive shaft, said clutch means including a first clutch member secured to said shaft, and a second clutch member secured to said annular member, biasing means for urging the clutch members to the engaged position, and operating means operably engageable with the annular member to move the second clutch member axially of the shaft to disengage said clutch means and to simultaneously stop rotation of the annular member and said cutting blade.
- 5. The lawn mower of claim 4, wherein said annular member has a lower surface and said operating means is disposed to engage said lower surface.
- 6. The lawn mower of claim 5, wherein said first clutch member is secured to the lower end of said shaft and the second clutch member is located above said first clutch member, said surface being located radially outward of said second clutch member.
