Claims
- 1. A sealing mechanism configured to be used in conjunction with a rotary valve assembly comprising a valve shaft, the sealing mechanism comprising:
at least one side seal configured to be at least partially seated within a corresponding groove in the valve shaft; and at least one longitudinal seal configured to be at least partially seated within a corresponding circumferential groove in the valve shaft, wherein the side seal and the longitudinal seal facilitate sealing of the rotary valve assembly when the valve shaft is disposed in a valve housing.
- 2. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 wherein the longitudinal seal comprises an arcuate shape.
- 3. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 wherein the longitudinal seal comprises at least one notch formed therein, wherein a portion of the side seal is configured to be seated within the notch in the longitudinal seal.
- 4. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 further comprising at least one spring disposed within the circumferential groove and beneath the longitudinal seal to cause the longitudinal seal to be biased in a radially outward direction.
- 5. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 further comprising at least one spring disposed beneath the side seal and configured to urge the side seal in a radially outward direction.
- 6. The sealing mechanism of claim 5 wherein the side seal comprises a curvature configured to facilitate sealing between the valve shaft and the valve housing.
- 7. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 wherein the valve shaft comprises at least one reduced diameter region.
- 8. The sealing mechanism of claim 7 further comprising at least one end seal, wherein the end seal comprises a bearing housing.
- 9. The sealing mechanism of claim 8 further comprising a bearing disposed in the bearing housing.
- 10. The sealing mechanism of claim 9 wherein the end seal further comprises a central bore, wherein the reduced diameter region of the valve shaft is configured to extend through the central bore in an assembled state.
- 11. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 wherein the sealing mechanism is configured to be used in conjunction with an internal combustion engine.
- 12. The sealing mechanism of claim 1 wherein the valve shaft is configured to rotate less than 360 degrees with respect to the valve housing to regulate flow.
