Claims
- 1. An optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus, comprising:a semiconductor laser; a D.C. current source operably connected to provide a drive signal to the semiconductor laser; and a R.F. current source operably connected to the D.C. current source so that the drive signal is modulated by a R.F. signal from the R.F. current source, wherein the semiconductor laser is characterized by a curve representing relative intensity noise to average optical output, the curve having a plurality of peaks caused by the drive signal modulated with the R.F. signal; and where the R.F. current source is operably configured such that the R.F. signal has a predetermined frequency, fm, and a predetermined amplitude, am, that cause the semiconductor laser to operate at an average optical output offset from each of the peaks.
- 2. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency, fm, and the predetermined amplitude, am, of the R.F. signal cause the semiconductor laser to operate in the range of P*±0.5 mW offset from the peak, where P* is the average optical output of the semiconductor laser.
- 3. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, the predetermined frequency, fm, is not lower than 600 MHz and the semiconductor laser has a relaxation oscillation frequency, fr, not greater than 3 GHz when the average optical output is not greater than 5 mW.
- 4. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 3, wherein the determined amplitude, am, is not lower than 5 mA.
- 5. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency, fm, is in the range of 100 MHz to 500 MHz and the semiconductor laser has a relaxation oscillation frequency, fr, not lower than 4 GHz when the average optical output is not greater than 5 mW.
- 6. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 5, wherein the predetermined amplitude, am, is not greater than 7 mA.
- 7. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency, fm, is the range of fr>fm>fr/5 where fr is a predetermined relaxation oscillation frequency of the semiconductor laser when the average optical output of the semiconductor is lower than 10 mW.
- 8. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the predetermined frequency, fm, is the range of fr>fm>fr/10 where fr is a predetermined relaxation oscillation frequency of the semiconductor laser when the average optical output of the semiconductor is greater than 10 mW.
- 9. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the R.F. signal has a rectangular waveform, the rectangular waveform having a pulse width, Wp, in the range of Td+1/fr>Wp>Td+2/fr where Td is a predetermined delay time in oscillation of said semiconductor laser and fr is a predetermined relaxation oscillation frequency of the semiconductor laser.
- 10. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 1, wherein the semiconductor laser is an AlGaInP semiconductor laser.
- 11. The optical disc recording and/or reproducing apparatus in claim 10, wherein the semiconductor laser has a quantum well active layer.
