Claims
- 1. A semiochemical delivery system for creating a termite-attractive semiochemical gradient in soil wherein said system comprises a durable station housing wherein an opening is defined in said durable station housing and said opening permits a removable cellulose source to be placed within said housing and said opening provides above-ground access to said cellulose source when said cellulose source is placed within said station housing and when said housing is deployed in soil, wherein said station housing is made of a polymer holding a semiochemical that is attractive to termites whereby said semiochemical is gradually released into soil when said station housing is deployed in soil.
- 2. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein said polymer is impregnated with said semiochemical.
- 3. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein said durable station housing is made from porous and absorbent plastic.
- 4. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein said semiochemical is a pheromone.
- 5. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein said semiochemical is water-soluble.
- 6. The delivery system of claim 1 wherein said semiochemical is extract of fungal-decayed wood.
- 7. The delivery system of claim 1 further comprising a removable cellulose source within said station housing.
- 8. The delivery system of claim 7 wherein said cellulose source is a monitoring device.
- 9. The delivery system of claim 7 wherein said cellulose source is a toxicant-containing matrix.
- 10. A semiochemical delivery system for attracting termites wherein said system comprises a bait station associated with at least one polymeric piece wherein said piece is made of a polymer that holds a termite-attracting semiochemical that is gradually released into soil to form a semiochemical gradient in the soil when said polymeric piece is deployed in soil, wherein said polymeric piece is associated with said bait station so that said semiochemical gradient leads termites foraging in the area to said station housing.
- 11. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said polymeric piece is attached to said station housing.
- 12. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said polymeric piece is in soil within two feet of said station housing.
- 13. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said polymeric piece is a sleeve fitted around said station housing.
- 14. The delivery system of claim 13 wherein said sleeve is made of an absorbent foam.
- 15. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein bait station is a hermetically sealed bait pouch made from a flexible material containing a toxicant-containing matrix.
- 16. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said bait station is a durable station housing wherein an opening is defined in said durable station housing and said opening permits a removable cellulose source to be placed within said housing and said opening provides above-ground access to said cellulose source when said cellulose source is placed within said station housing.
- 17. The delivery system of claim 16 further comprising a removable cellulose source within said station housing.
- 18. The delivery system of claim 17 wherein said cellulose source is a monitoring device.
- 19. The delivery system of claim 17 wherein said cellulose source is a toxicant-containing matrix.
- 20. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said polymer is impregnated with said semiochemical.
- 21. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said semiochemical is a pheromone.
- 22. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said semiochemical is water-soluble.
- 23. The delivery system of claim 10 wherein said semiochemical is extract of fungal-decayed wood.
- 24. A method of attracting termites to a bait station, said bait station adapted to hold a cellulose source, wherein said method comprises the steps of placing said bait station in or on the ground in a location that is accessible to termites, and deploying at least one polymeric reservoir that holds a termite-attracting semiochemical so that a semiochemical gradient is created in the ground and said semiochemical gradient attracts foraging termites to said bait station.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein said bait station holds a cellulose source.
- 26. The method of claim 25 wherein said cellulose source is removable and said station housing is placed in the ground and said station housing is a durable station housing having above-ground accessibility to said cellulose source.
- 27. The method of claim 24 wherein said bait station is made of a polymer impregnated with a semiochemical and said polymer is said polymeric reservoir and said placing step and said deploying step occur simultaneously.
- 28. A two-dimensional testing apparatus for assessing the degree to which termites are attracted to a semiochemical in soil, said apparatus comprising:
a first plate and a second plate in a parallel configuration, soil between said plates, wherein said plates are separated by a space small enough to allow termites placed in said soil to travel only in substantially two dimensions in said soil, a substantially straight physical guide between said plates, and an opening, defined in one of said plates, for placing termites in said soil wherein said opening is located so that termites placed in the opening and into the soil must follow said physical guide, said physical guide extending only partially in said soil so as to allow said termites to forage freely in any direction in substantially two dimensions after traveling along said guide.
