Claims
- 1. Apparatus for breaking a web having a length and a width, and having spaced transverse lines of weakness, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a web drive assembly comprising first and second driven rolls forming a first nip, and receiving and transporting the web through the first nip;
- (b) a second nip downstream of said web drive assembly, the second nip receiving and transporting the web through the second nip;
- (c) said web drive assembly and the second nip being separated along the length of the web by a distance of less than 5 inches, said distance defining a gap, the web being unsupported across the gap;
- (d) a breaker assembly in the gap, said breaker assembly comprising at least one breaker bar moving in a direction transverse to both the length and the width of the web, the at least one breaker bar moving into stressing engagement with the web and traversing through a path of advance of the web while causing the web to break at the line of weakness, the breaker bar thereupon being disposed on an opposite side of the web; and
- (e) a driving apparatus driving said first and second nips and moving said at least one breaker bar, and a controller controlling the driving of the first and second nips and movement of said at least one breaker bar.
- 2. Apparatus as in claim 1, the gap between said web drive assembly and the second nip being no more than 3 inches long.
- 3. Apparatus as in claim 1, the gap between said web drive assembly and the second nip being between about 1 inch and about 2 inches long.
- 4. Apparatus for breaking a web having a length and a width, and having spaced transverse lines of weakness, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a web drive assembly comprising first and second driven rolls forming a first nip, and receiving and transporting the web through the first nip;
- (b) a second nip downstream of said web drive assembly, the second nip receiving and transporting the web through the second nip;
- (c) said web drive assembly and the second nip being separated along the length of the web by a distance of less than 5 inches, said distance defining a gap, the web being unsupported across the gap;
- (d) a breaker assembly in the cap, said breaker assembly comprising at least one breaker bar moving in a plane of motion that is perpendicular to both the length and the width of the web, movement of said at least one breaker bar into stressing engagement with the web causing the web to break at the line of weakness; and
- (e) a driving apparatus driving said first and second nips and moving said at least one breaker bar, and a controller controlling the driving of the first and second nips and movement of said at least one breaker bar,
- the breaker assembly further comprising an axis of rotation parallel to the length of the web and located adjacent to the web, said at least one breaker bar moving in rotation around the axis of rotation so as to engage the web transversely across the width of the web.
- 5. Apparatus for breaking a web having a length and a width, and having spaced transverse lines of weakness, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a web drive assembly comprising first and second driven rolls forming a first nip, and receiving and transporting the web through the first nip;
- (b) a second nip downstream of said web drive assembly, the second nip receiving and transporting the web through the second nip;
- (c) said web drive assembly and the second nip being separated along the length of the web by a distance of less than 5 inches, said distance defining a gas, the web being unsupported across the gap;
- (d) a breaker assembly in the gap, said breaker assembly comprising first and second breaker bars; and
- (e) driving apparatus driving rolls defining the first and second nips and driving said first and second breaker bars, and a controller controlling the driving of the rolls defining the first and second nips and driving of the first and second breaker bars,
- said first and second breaker bars moving in opposite directions transverse to both the length and the width of the web into cooperatively stressing engagement engaging opposing surfaces of the web, transversely across the width of the web at spaced locations along the length of the web and thereby causing the web to break at the line of weakness.
- 6. Apparatus for breaking a web having a length and a width, and having spaced transverse lines of weakness, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a web drive assembly comprising first and second driven rolls forming a first nip for receiving and transporting the web through the first nip;
- (b) a second nip downstream of said web drive assembly for receiving and transporting the web through the second nip;
- said web drive assembly and the second nip being separated along the length of the web by a distance of less than 5 inches, said distance defining a gap, the web being unsupported across the gap;
- (d) a breaker assembly in the gap, said breaker assembly comprising at least one breaker element moving in a direction transverse to both the length and the width of the web, movement of said at least one breaker element into stressing engagement with the web causing the web to break at the line of weakness; and
- (e) driving apparatus driving said first and second nips and moving said at least one breaker element; and
- (f) a controller controlling the driving of the first and second nips and the movement of said at least one breaker element,
- the breaker assembly further comprising an axis of rotation parallel to the length of the web and located adjacent to the web, said at least one breaker element moving in rotation around the axis of rotation so as to engage the web transversely across the width of the web.
- 7. Apparatus for breaking a web having a length and a width, and having spaced transverse lines of weakness, said apparatus comprising:
- (a) a web drive assembly comprising first and second driven rolls forming a first nip for receiving and transporting the web through the first nip;
- (b) a second nip downstream of said web drive assembly, receiving and transporting the web through the second nip;
- (c) said web drive assembly and the second nip being separated along the length of the web by a distance of less than 5 inches, said distance defining a gap, the web being unsupported across the gap;
- (d) a breaker assembly in the gas, said breaker assembly comprising at least one breaker element moving in a direction transverse to both the length and the width of the web; and
- (e) driving apparatus driving rolls defining the first and second nips and moving said at least one breaker element; and
- (f) a controller controlling the driving of the rolls defining the first and second nips and the movement of said at least one breaker element,
- the breaker assembly further comprising a second breaker element, said at least one breaker element and said second breaker element moving in opposite directions so as to engage the web transversely across the width of the web at two locations.
