Claims
- 1. Injection molding apparatus for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said apparatus comprising:
- a first molding station and a second molding station,
- at least one first mold located at said first molding station and at least one second mold located at said second molding station, said molds being operative to form molded parts,
- primary and secondary clamping means operative to close and clamp said molds, wherein the secondary clamping means is operative to separately clamp said molds,
- a molten plastic distributor means having individual channels for communicating sequentially and selectively with said molding stations in an overlapping cycle,
- primary and secondary injection means both of which being operative to directly inject molten plastic into both of said clamped molds, wherein said secondary injection means is operative to stuff at least one of said molds,
- means to open said at least one first mold while said at least one second mold is closed, including means to release the clamping force on said moles independently of each other, and
- means to remove the plastic parts.
- 2. An injection molding machine for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said apparatus comprising:
- a main frame,
- a plurality of movable platens supported in said main frame,
- first and second separable and removable molds carried by said platens,
- primary and secondary clamping means operative to close and clamp said molds, wherein the secondary clamping means is operative to separately clamp said molds,
- a plurality of sources of molten plastic each including injection means operative to directly inject molten plastic into said molds,
- a discrete, movable central platen defining a distributor block having a plurality of individual channels for sequentially distributing molten plastic to said molds at a plurality of mold locations in an overlapping cycle,
- means for coupling said channels individually to mating sources of molten plastic and to said molds,
- control means for activating said molten plastic sources selectively and sequentially to advance molten plastic to said molds via said distributor block to selected molds at selected mold locations.
- means to open said first mold while said second mold is closed, and
- means to remove the plastic parts.
- 3. The machine of claim 2 in which the plurality of sources of molten plastic defines a primary source and a secondary source of molten plastic, both of which being operative to directly inject molten plastic into said plurality of molds.
- 4. The molding machine of claim 3 in which the central platen includes an inlet conduit operable to connect releasably with said primary source of molten plastic.
- 5. The molding machine of claim 4 in which said inlet conduit includes a cut-off valve.
- 6. The molding machine of claim 3 in which the primary source of molten plastic is a movable extruder supported by said frame and the secondary source is a stuffer mechanism fixed to one of said platens.
- 7. A cyclic injection molding machine for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including ejection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said apparatus comprising:
- a main frame,
- a plurality of movable platens supported in said main frame,
- first and second separable and removable molds carried by said platens,
- primary and secondary clamping means operative to close and clamp said molds, wherein the secondary clamping means is operative to separately close and clamp said molds,
- a primary and a secondary source of molten plastic including primary and secondary injection means operative to directly inject molten plastic into said clamped molds,
- a discrete, movable central platen defining a distributor block for sequentially and selectively distributing moldable compound to said molds in an overlapping cycle,
- conduit means for connecting said distributor block to said primary and secondary sources of molten plastic,
- a plurality of valve means in said distributor block,
- a first valve means in said block operable to switch molten plastic flow from said first mold to said second mold selectively,
- a second valve means in said block operable to control molten plastic flow from one of said primary and secondary sources,
- selectively, to insure introduction and maintenance of adequate molten plastic in each said mold in cyclic fashion, and
- means to open said first mold while said second mold is closed.
- 8. In an injection molding machine for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, the improvement comprising:
- a machine frame,
- a first mold platen fixed to said frame,
- second and third mold platens supported movably in said frame,
- first and second removable molds, each mold having cooperating, separable mold halves supported by said platens,
- means cooperating with one of said movable platens for directly sequentially and selectively injecting molten plastic to said molds in an overlapping cycle,
- primary and secondary clamping means supported by said machine frame and by said platens,
- said primary and secondary clamping means being operable collectively to clamp said platens and molds, and said secondary clamping means being selectively operable individually to clamp said platens and molds, and
- means to open said first mold while said second mold is closed.
- 9. The molding machine of claim 8 in which the secondary clamping means are supported by the platens.
- 10. The molding machine of claim 8 in which the secondary clamping means are supported by one of said molds.
- 11. The molding machine of claim 8 in which the secondary clamping means are supported by one of said mold halves, and said machine also includes primary and secondary injection means both of which being operative to directly inject molten plastic into said first and second molds.
- 12. An injection molding machine for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said machine having first and second molding stations, each station having a corresponding mold with separable mold halves for producing an injection molded product in a given orientation, the halves of each mold being arranged to produce injection molded product in the same orientation comprising:
- a machine frame,
- a plurality of mold platens supported by said frame,
- a first movable platen having two opposed sides with a first side supporting and communicating with a first mold half mounted thereon and a second side supporting and communicating with a second mold half mounted thereon.
- a second movable platen supporting a mold half mating with said first mold half,
- a third fixed platen supporting a mold half mating with said second mold half,
- primary and secondary clamping means operative to close and clamp said molds wherein the secondary clamping means is operative to separately close and clamp said molds,
- a manifold in said first platen for distributing molten plastic to said mating mold halves,
- injection means operable to sequentially and selectively in an overlapping cycle supply molten plastic to said first mold half via said manifold and to said second mold half directly whereby product molded at each said molding station bears the same orientation, and
- means to open said first mold while said second mold is closed.
- 13. The molding machine of claim 12 in which the injection means defines first and second primary injection units, the first primary injection unit feeding directly to a first mold station and the second primary injection unit feeding the second mold station via said manifold.
- 14. The molding machine of claim 13 in which said manifold communicates with the first and second mold halves and the injection means defines a single primary injection unit.
- 15. The molding machine of claim 14 in which the manifold includes valve means for controlling flow of molten plastic from said single primary injection unit to said mold stations.
- 16. An injection molding machine for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said apparatus comprising in combination,
- a frame means,
- a plurality of fixed and movable platens, supported by the frame means,
- a primary molten plastic injection means supported in said frame means,
- a secondary molten plastic injection means supported in said frame means,
- a manifold incorporated in one of said movable platens communicating with both said injection means,
- a plurality of molds supported by said platens having mold cavities communicating with and positioned on opposite sides of the said manifold, wherein said molten plastic injection means is operable to sequentially and selectively feed molten plastic to said molds in an overlapping cycle, and wherein both said primary and secondary molten plastic injection means are operative to directly feed molten plastic into said molds,
- a single primary clamp means supported by said frame means,
- a secondary clamp means supported by said platens,
- means for actuating said primary clamp means to clamp all said molds,
- means for actuating said secondary clamp means to clamp a selected mold,
- means for actuating said primary injection means to feed a charge of plastic to said selected mold via said manifold,
- means for releasing said primary clamp means and for opening one of said molds on a side of the manifold opposed to the selected mold while leaving the selected mold clamped by the secondary clamp means,
- means for actuating said secondary injection means to feed an additional plastic to said selected mold via said manifold, and
- whereby said selected mold remains clamped by said secondary clamp means independently of said primary clamp means for a predetermined interval during which time said one of said molds is opened.
- 17. The molding machine of claim 16 including means for sequencing said primary and secondary clamp means and said primary and secondary injection means according to a predetermined operation cycle.
- 18. The molding machine of claim 17 in which said secondary clamp means is supported by one of said molds.
- 19. The molding machine of claim 17 in which said molds are positioned at individual mold stations and each mold includes a plurality of mold halves and a secondary clamp is located at each mold station and supported by a mold half.
- 20. Injection molding apparatus for molding plastic parts, said apparatus operating a molding cycle including injection, hold under pressure, cool and ejection, said apparatus comprising:
- a first and a second molding station,
- at least one first mold located at said first molding station and at least one second mold located at said second molding station,
- primary and secondary clamping means operative to close and clamp said molds wherein the secondary clamping means is operative to separately clamp said molds,
- a molten plastic distributor means communicating with both molding stations, said distributor means selectively and sequentially communicating with one mold station at a time in an overlapping cycle operative to communicate with said first mold in a closed mold condition while said second mold is in an open mold condition,
- primary injection means operative to directly inject molten plastic into said clamped molds,
- means to release the clamping force on said molds independently of each other wherein said first mold can be opened while the second mold is closed, and
- means to remove the plastic parts.
