Claims
- 1. An isolated nucleic acid molecule encoding a gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase.
- 2. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 encoding a gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 3. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 2 wherein said sesquiterpene synthase is from a gymnosperm plant species selected from the group consisting of Grand fir (Abies grandis), White fir (Abies concolor), Western larch (Larix occidentalis), Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).
- 4. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 1 encoding a Grand fir (Abies grandis) sesquiterpene synthase.
- 5. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 4 encoding a sesquiterpene synthase selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 6. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 5 encoding E-α-bisabolene synthase.
- 7. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 5 encoding δ-selinene synthase.
- 8. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 5 encoding γ-humulene synthase.
- 9. An isolated nucleic acid molecule of claim 5 having the nucleic acid sequence set forth in any one of SEQ ID No:12, SEQ ID No:19 and SEQ ID No:23.
- 10. An isolated nucleic acid molecule that is capable of hybridizing, under stringent conditions, to any one of the nucleic acid molecules set forth in SEQ ID No:12, SEQ ID No:19 and SEQ ID No:23, or to the antisense complement of any one of the nucleic acid molecules set forth in SEQ ID. No:12, SEQ ID No:19 and SEQ ID No:23.
- 11. An isolated recombinant gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein.
- 12. An isolated, recombinant, sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 11, said protein being selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 13. An isolated recombinant, gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 12, said protein occurring naturally in a plant species selected from the group consisting of Grand fir (Abies grandis), White fir (Abies concolor), Western larch (Larix occidentalis), Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), Loblolly pine (Pinzs taeda) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).
- 14. An isolated, recombinant, Grand fir (Abies grandis) sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 11.
- 15. An isolated, recombinant, sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 14, said protein being selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 16. An isolated, recombinant, gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 15, said protein being E-α-bisabolene synthase.
- 17. An isolated, recombinant, gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 15, said protein being δ-selinene synthase.
- 18. An isolated, recombinant, gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 15, said protein being γ-humulene synthase.
- 19. An isolated, recombinant, gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase protein of claim 15 having the amino acid sequence set forth in any one of SEQ ID No:13, SEQ ID No:20 and SEQ ID No:24.
- 20. A replicable expression vector comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase.
- 21. A replicable expression vector of claim 20 comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a sesquiterpene synthase selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 22. A replicable expression vector of claim 21 wherein said sesquiterpene synthase is from a gymnosperm plant species selected from the group consisting of Grand fir (Abies grandis), White fir (Abies concolor), Western larch (Larix occidentalis), Colorado blue spruce (Picea pungens), Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii).
- 23. A replicable expression vector of claim 20 comprising a nucleic acid sequence encoding a Grand fir (Abies grandis) sesquiterpene synthase, said sesquiterpene synthase being selected from the group consisting of E-α-bisabolene synthase, δ-selinene synthase and γ-humulene synthase.
- 24. A method of imparting or enhancing the production of a gymnosperm sesquiterpene synthase in a host cell comprising introducing into the host cell an expression vector of any one of claims 21, 22 and 23 under conditions enabling expression of the sesquiterpene synthase protein in the host cell.
- 25. The method of claim 24 wherein the host cell is a prokaryotic cell.
- 26. The method of claim 24 wherein the host cell is a eukaryotic cell.
- 27. The method of claim 26 wherein the host cell is a plant cell.
- 28. The method of claim 26 wherein the host cell is an animal cell.
- 29. A plant comprising a replicable expression vector of any one of claims 21, 22 and 23.
