Claims
- 1. An improved shaft for use in a method for treating a body of molten aluminum using an impeller mounted on the shaft, the impeller suitable for dispersing a material selected from fluxing gas, solid particles and an immiscible liquid in the body of molten aluminum, the method including providing a body of molten aluminum having a surface and projecting an impeller on said shaft into said body through said surface, the improvement comprising:(a) a carbon or graphite shaft, generally circular in cross section; and (b) a refractory sleeve resistant to attack by molten aluminum fixedly cast around said shaft and mechanically locked therewith, said sleeve positioned to extend above and below said surface when said shaft is projected into said body.
- 2. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said sleeve is comprised of a refractory selected from the group consisting of fused silica, mullite, SiAlON, silicon carbide, aluminum titinate and alumina.
- 3. The shaft in accordance with claim 1 wherein said sleeve is formed from fused silica.
