Claims
- 1. A shampoo composition comprising:
a) from about 5 to about 50 weight percent of a detersive surfactant, b) at least about 0.05 weight percent of a fatty alcohol gel network, and c) at least about 20.0 weight percent of an aqueous carrier.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 further comprising a deposition aid.
- 3. The composition of claim 2 wherein said deposition aid is a cationic polymer.
- 4. The composition of claim 3 wherein said cationic polymer has a molecular weight of from about 10,000 to about 10,000,000 and a charge density from about 0.9 meq/gm to about 7.0 meq/gm.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein said fatty alcohol gel network is present in an amount from about 0.05 weight percent to about 14 weight percent.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein said fatty alcohol gel network is present in an amount from about 1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein said fatty alcohol gel network is formed using a cationic surfactant.
- 8. The composition of claim 7 wherein said cationic surfactant is selected from the group consisting of quaternium-8, quaternium-14, quaternium-18, quatemium-18 methosulfate, quatemium-24, behenyltrimethylammonium chloride, and mixtures thereof.
- 9. A method of treating hair by administering a safe and effective amount of the composition according to claim 1.
- 10. A process for preparing a cleansing composition comprising:
a) combining a fatty alcohol and a surfactant in a premix at a temperature sufficient to allow partitioning of the surfactant into the fatty alcohol, b) cooling the mixture below the chain melt temperature of the premix to form a gel network, c) adding the gel network to a detersive surfactant and an aqueous carrier to form a cleansing composition.
- 11. The process of claim 10 wherein the surfactant of step a) is selected from the group consisting of quaternium-8, quaternium-14, quaternium-18, quaternium-18 methosulfate, quaternium-24, behenyltrimethylammonium chloride, and mixtures thereof.
- 12. A shampoo composition prepared by the process of claim 10.
- 13. The shampoo composition of claim 1 wherein said composition deposits at least 200 parts per million of fatty alcohol as measured by the following method:
a) Treat four individual switches of hair with 3 cycles each of said shampoo composition, wherein a “cycle” involves lathering the switch with 0.1 grams of shampoo per gram of hair, rinsing, lathering the switch with another 0.1 grams of shampoo per gram of hair, and rinsing again; b) Extract the switches with solvent; and c) Measure the level of adsorbed fatty alcohol by gas chromatographic-mass spectrophotometric analysis of the extracts.
- 14. The shampoo composition of claim 13 wherein said composition deposits at least 400 parts per million of fatty alcohol.
- 15. The shampoo composition of claim 13 wherein said composition deposits at least 600 parts per million of fatty alcohol.
- 16. The shampoo composition of claim 7 wherein said composition deposits at least 20 parts per million of cationic surfactant as measured by the following method:
a) Treat four individual switches of hair with 3 cycles each of said shampoo composition, wherein a “cycle” involves lathering the switch with 0.1 grams of shampoo per gram of hair, rinsing, lathering the switch with another 0.1 grams of shampoo per gram of hair, and rinsing again; b) Extract the switches with solvent; and c) Measure the level of adsorbed cationic surfactant by gas chromatographic-mass spectrophotometric analysis of the extracts.
- 17. The shampoo composition of claim 16 wherein said composition deposits at least 50 parts per million of cationic surfactant.
- 18. The shampoo composition of claim 16 wherein said composition deposits at least 100 parts per million of cationic surfactant.
