Claims
- 1. A photoassisted heterogenous catalytic composition comprising a zeolite having an organic dye sensitizer photoassisting species within its structure.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein the photoassisting species includes an organic dye sensitizer selected from the group consisting of crystal violet, sodium-9, 10-anthrequinone-2-sulfuric acid, C.I. Acid Red 12, d, l, mandelic acid, acridine dyes, astrazone orange G, astrazone pink FG, erythrosine B and rosolic acid.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein the photoassisting species comprises less than about one percent by weight of the zeolite composition.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein the zeolite is selected from the group consisting of zeolites A, B, E, F, H, J, L, M, Q, T, U, W, X, Y, Z, ZK4, ZK5, 4A and 13X.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the zeolite catalyst modified is zeolite 4A.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the zeolite catalyst modified is zeolite 13X.
- 7. A zeolite catalyst selected from the group consisting of ZSM-5, ZSM-11, ZSM-5/ZSM-11 intermediate, ZSM-23, ZSM-35, ZSM-38 and ZSM-48 which has been modified for use in photoassisted heterogenous catalytic reactions by including an organic dye sensitizer photoassisting species within the zeolite whereby the resulting catalyst composite is capable of catalyzing highly specific photochemical reactions based on the shape and sorption characteristics of the zeolite structure.
