Claims
- 1. A shaped cellulose article which has been formed by a process which comprises shaping a solution containing cellulose dissolved in a solvent therefor which contains a tertiary amine N-oxide solvent for cellulose and a nonsolvent for cellulose which is miscible with the tertiary amine N-oxide solvent, stretching the resulting shaped solution and then precipitating the cellulose from said resulting shaped solution to form said shaped cellulose article having improved physical properties.
- 2. The product of claim 1 having a wet modulus of at least about 7 gpd at 5% elongation.
- 3. The product of claim 1 having a conditioned tenacity of at least about 1.4 gpd.
- 4. A shaped cellulose article which has been formed by a process which comprises shaping a solution containing cellulose dissolved in a solvent therefor which contains a tertiary amine N-oxide solvent for cellulose and a nonsolvent for cellulose which is miscible with the tertiary amine N-oxide solvent, and shaped cellulose article having a wet modulus of at least about 7 gpd at 5% elongation.
- 5. A shaped cellulose article which has been formed by a process which comprises shaping a solution containing cellulose dissolved in a solvent therefor which contains a tertiary amine N-oxide solvent for cellulose and a nonsolvent for cellulose which is miscible with the tertiary amine N-oxide solvent, said shaped cellulose article having a conditioned tenacity of at least about 1.4 gpd.
- 6. The product of claim 4 having a conditioned tenacity of at least about 1.4 gpd.
- 7. The product of claim 1 stretched at a spin stretch ratio of greater than about 3.
- 8. The product of claim 7 having a conditioned tenacity of at least about 1.4 gpd.
- 9. The product of claim 7 having a wet tenacity of at least about 0.5 gpd.
- 10. The product of claim 7 having a conditioned tenacity from about 1.4 to about 4.7 gpd.
- 11. The product of claim 7 having a wet tenacity of about 0.5 to about 3.7 gpd.
- 12. The product of claim 7 having a wet modulus from about 7 to about 28 gpd at 5% elongation.
- 13. The shaped article of claim 1 in the form of a fiber.
- 14. The shaped article of claim 1 in the form of a film.
- 15. A cellulose fiber or film prepared by spinning a solution containing cellulose into a nonprecipitating fluid medium, stretching the resulting filament in said medium while still a solution to orient the cellulose molecules and thereafter precipitating the cellulose with a nonsolvent for cellulose to set the physical properties, said fiber or film having a conditioned elongation about equal to its elongation while wet.
- 16. A cellulose fiber which has been formed by spinning a solution containing cellulose dissolved in a solvent therefor, said solvent containing a tertiary amine N-oxide solvent for cellulose and a non-solvent for cellulose which is miscible with the tertiary amine N-oxide, stretching the resulting filament at a spin-stretch ratio of at least 3 to 1 while the cellulose is still dissolved in the said solvent to orient the molecules and to improve the physical properties of the resulting fiber, and thereafter precipitating the cellulose from the filament to form a fiber having a wet modulus of at least about 7 gpd at 5% elongation, a conditioned tenacity of at least about 1.4 gpd and a wet elongation which is about equal to the fiber's conditioned elongation.
- 17. The fiber of claim 16 wherein the spinning, stretching and precipitation follow each other without substantial interruption.
