Claims
- 1. A filter-combiner for combining television signals from adjacent channels comprising:
said combiner having two inputs that respectively receive an NTSC combined visual and aural signal and a DTV signal wherein said NTSC signal and said DTV signal are in adjacent channels, said DTV signal being of greater frequency than said NTSC signal, and providing a combined output signal at an output of said combiner; and, said combiner having sharp tuned filtering means interposed between said inputs and said output and tuned to pass said DTV signal while reflecting substantially all of said NTSC signal such that said passed DTV signal and said reflected NTSC signal combine as said combined output signal.
- 2. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 1 in combination with an NTSC source that provides said NTSC signal and a DTV source that provides said DTV signal, said DTV source including an exciter having pre-correction circuitry that pre-corrects said DTV signal to compensate for any distortions introduced by said filtering means.
- 3. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 2 wherein said pre-correction circuitry compensates for any linear in-band distortions.
- 4. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 1 wherein the bandwidth of each said channel is on the order of W MHz; and,
said filtering means exhibits an amplitude response within a mandated mask such as that when operated in an RF transmitter the amplitude of the response is attenuated uniformly about the center frequency of said DTV channel within a frequency range of about ±0.5 W MHz to a maximum of about ±(0.5W+0.45) MHz and extending to an attenuated level of about −1 to −18 dB from the in-band power level.
- 5. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 4 wherein W is in the range from about 6.0 MHz to about 8.0 MHz.
- 6. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 4 wherein W=6.0 MHz.
- 7. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 6, wherein said mandated mask is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask.
- 8. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 7 wherein said mandated mask requires that the amplitude response be at ±3.5 MHz about said center frequency at the in-band power level and extend therefrom in a skirt like fashion to a level of about −64 dB at ±9.0 MHz.
- 9. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 8 wherein the amplitude response of said filtering means extends from said attenuated level to a level of about −40 dB −64 dB at about ±9.0 MHz within said mandated mask.
- 10. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 9 wherein the amplitude response of said filtering means extends from said attenuated level in a skirt like fashion.
- 11. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 10 wherein said skirt like fashion varies in a linear manner.
- 12. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 9 wherein said filtering means exhibits the characteristic of maintaining the amplitude of any variations in the magnitude of said in-band power level within about 0.5 dB.
- 13. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 9 wherein said filtering means exhibits the characteristic of maintaining any insertion loss within about −0.20 dB from said in-band power level.
- 14. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 6 wherein said given frequency channel has a channel edge and that said filter exhibits the characteristic of attenuating any emitted power within 0.5 MHz from said channel edge by an amount greater than −47 dB below said in-band power level.
- 15. A filter-combiner for combining television signals from adjacent channels comprising:
said combiner having two inputs that respectively receive an NTSC combined visual and aural signal and a DTV signal wherein said NTSC signal and said DTV signal are in adjacent channels, said DTV signal being of greater frequency than said NTSC signal, and providing a combined output signal at an output of said combiner; said combiner including first and second hybrids and first and second sharp tuned filters, said filters being tuned to pass said DTV signal while reflecting substantially all of said NTSC signal; said first hybrid having an input port that receives said DTV signal and passes portions thereof to a pair of output ports of said first hybrid; said second hybrid has a port that receives said NTSC signal and passes portions thereof to a pair of output ports of said second coupler; and, said first filter being connected from one of said output ports of said first hybrid to one of said output ports of said second hybrid and said second filter being connected from the other one of said output ports of said first hybrid to the other one of said output ports of said second hybrid to thereby pass said DTV signal and reflect said NTSC signal such that said passed DTV signal and said reflected NTSC signal combine as said combined output at another port of said second hybrid, wherein said another port serves as said output of said combiner.
- 16. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 15 in combination with an NTSC source that provides said NTSC signal and a DTV source that provides said DTV signal, said DTV source including an exciter having pre-correction circuitry that pre-corrects said DTV signal to compensate for any distortions introduced by said filters.
- 17. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 16 wherein said pre-correction circuitry compensates for any linear in-band distortions.
- 18. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 15 wherein the bandwidth of each said channel is on the order of W MHz; and,
each said filter exhibits an amplitude response within a mandated mask such that when operated in an RF transmitter the amplitude of the response is attenuated uniformly about the center frequency of said DTV channel within a frequency range of about ±0.5 W MHz to a maximum of about ±(0.5W+0.45) MHz and extending to an attenuated level of about −1 to −18 dB from the in-band power level.
- 19. A filter-combiner as et forth in claim 18 wherein W is in the range from about 6.0 MHz to about 8.0 MHz.
- 20. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 19 wherein W=6.0 MHz.
- 21. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 20 wherein said mandated mask is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask.
- 22. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 21 wherein said mandated mask requires that the amplitude response be at ±3.5 MHz about said center frequency at the in-band power level and extend therefrom in a skirt like fashion to a level of about −64 dB at ±9.0 MHz.
- 23. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 22 wherein the amplitude response of each said filter extends from said attenuated level to a level of about −40 dB −64 dB at about ±9.0 MHz within said mandated mask.
- 24. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 23 wherein the amplitude response of each said filter extends from said attenuated level in a skirt like fashion.
- 25. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 24 wherein said skirt like fashion varies in a linear manner.
- 26. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 23 wherein each said filter exhibits the characteristic of maintaining the amplitude of any variations in the magnitude of said in-band power level within about 0.5 dB.
- 27. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 23 wherein each said filter exhibits the characteristic of maintaining any insertion loss within about −0.20 dB from said in-band power level.
- 28. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 23 wherein said given frequency channel has a channel edge and that each said filter exhibits the characteristic of attenuating any emitted power within 0.5 MHz from said channel edge by an amount greater than −47 dB below said in-band power level.
- 29. A filter-combiner for combining television signals from adjacent channels comprising:
said combiner having two inputs that respectively receive a first DTV signal and a second DTV signal wherein said DTV signals are of different frequencies and in adjacent channels, and providing a combined output signal at an output of said combiner; and, said combiner having sharp tuned filtering means interposed between said inputs and said output and tuned for passing said first DTV signal while reflecting substantially all of said second DTV signal such that said passed first DTV signal and said reflected second DTV signal combine as said combined output signal.
- 30. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 29 in combination with an NTSC source that provides said NTSC signal and a DTV source that provides said DTV signal, said DTV source including an exciter having pre-correction circuitry that pre-corrects said DTV signal to compensate for any distortions introduced by said filtering means.
- 31. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 30 wherein said pre-correction circuitry compensates for any linear in-band distortions.
- 32. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 29 wherein the bandwidth of each said channel is on the order of W MHz; and,
said filtering means exhibits an amplitude response within a mandated mask such as that when operated in an RF transmitter the amplitude of the response is attenuated uniformly about the center frequency of said DTV channel within a frequency range of about ±0.5 W MHz to a maximum of about ±(0.5W+0.45) MHz and extending to an attenuated level of about −1 to −18 dB from the in-band power level.
- 33. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 32 wherein W is in the range from about 6.0 MHz to about 8.0 MHz.
- 34. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 32 wherein W=6.0 MHz.
- 35. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 34, wherein said mandated mask is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask.
- 36. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 35 wherein said mandated mask requires that the amplitude response be at ±3.5 MHz about said center frequency at the in-band power level and extend therefrom in a skirt like fashion to a level of about −64 dB at ±9.0 MHz.
- 37. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 36 wherein the amplitude response of said filtering means extends from said attenuated level to a level of about −40 to −64 dB at about ±9.0 MHz within said mandated mask.
- 38. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 37 wherein the amplitude response of said filtering means extends from said attenuated level in a skirt like fashion.
- 39. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 38 wherein said skirt like fashion varies in a linear manner.
- 40. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 37 wherein said filtering means exhibits the characteristic of maintaining the amplitude of any variations in the magnitude of said in-band power level within about 0.5 dB.
- 41. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 37 wherein said filtering means exhibits the characteristic of maintaining any insertion loss within about −0.20 dB from said in-band power level.
- 42. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 37 wherein said given frequency channel has a channel edge and that said filter exhibits the characteristic of attenuating any emitted power within 0.5 MHz from said channel edge by an amount greater than −47 dB below said in-band power level.
- 43. A filter for combining television signals from adjacent channels comprising:
said combiner having two inputs that respectively receive a first DTV signal and a second DTV signal wherein said DTV signals are of different frequencies and in adjacent channels, and providing a combined output signal at an output of said combiner; said combiner including first and second hybrids and first and second sharp tuned filters, said filters being tuned to pass said first DTV signal while reflecting substantially all of said second DTV signal; said first hybrid having an input port that receives said first DTV signal and passes portions thereof to output ports of said first hybrid; said second hybrid has an input port that receives said second DTV signal and passes portions thereof to a pair of output ports of said second hybrid; and, said first filter being connected from one of said output ports of said first hybrid to one of said output ports of said second hybrid and said second filter being connected from the other one of said output ports of said first hybrid to the other one of said output ports of said second hybrid to thereby pass said first DTV signal and reflect said second DTV signal such that said passed first DTV signal and said reflected second DTV signal combine as said combined output at another port of said second hybrid, wherein said another port is said output of said combiner.
- 44. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 43 in combination with an first DTV source that provides said first DTV signal and a second DTV source that provides said second DTV signal, said first DTV source including an exciter having pre-correction circuitry that pre-corrects said first DTV signal to compensate for any distortions introduced by said filters.
- 45. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 44 wherein said pre-correction circuitry compensates for any linear in-band distortions.
- 46. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 43 wherein the bandwidth of each said channel is on the order of W MHz; and,
each said filter exhibits an amplitude response within a mandated mask such that when operated in an RF transmitter the amplitude of the response is attenuated uniformly about the center frequency of said first DTV channel within a frequency range of about ±0.5 W MHz to a maximum of about ±(0.5W+0.45) MHz and extending to an attenuated level of about −1 to −18 dB from the in-band power level.
- 47. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 46 wherein W is in the range from about 6.0 MHz to about 8.0 MHz.
- 48. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 47 wherein W=6.0 MHz.
- 49. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 48 wherein said mandated mask is the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mask.
- 50. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 49 wherein said mandated mask requires that the amplitude response be at ±3.5 MHz about said center frequency at the in-band power level and extend therefrom in a skirt like fashion to a level of about −64 dB at ±9.0 MHz.
- 51. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 50 wherein the amplitude response of each said filter extends from said attenuated level to a level of about −40 to −64 dB at about ±9.0 MHz within said mandated mask.
- 52. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 51 wherein the amplitude response of each said filter extends from said attenuated level in a skirt like fashion.
- 53. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 52 wherein said skirt like fashion varies in a linear manner.
- 54. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 51 wherein each said filter exhibits the characteristic of maintaining the amplitude of any variations in the magnitude of said in-band power level within about 0.5 dB.
- 55. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 51 wherein each said filter exhibits the characteristic of maintaining any insertion loss within about −0.20 dB from said in-band power level.
- 56. A filter-combiner as set forth in claim 51 wherein said given frequency channel has a channel edge and that each said filter exhibits the characteristic of attenuating any emitted power within 0.5 MHz from said channel edge by an amount greater than −47 dB below said in-band power level.
