Claims
- 1. A method for securing an intermediate member having a length to a clamping device, comprising:
- defining a space in a clamping device using a first member and a second member, wherein an insert member is associated with said second member;
- positioning an intermediate member having a length into said space;
- clamping said intermediate member to said clamping device, said clamping step comprising moving said insert member relative to each of said second member and said intermediate member in a direction different from said length of said intermediate member and through an entire thickness of said intermediate member; and
- retaining said insert member within said intermediate member in said clamping device during use of said clamping device.
- 2. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said defining step includes providing said clamping device that includes a one-piece leader block that is molded.
- 3. A method, as claimed in claim 2, wherein:
- said first member includes a main body and said second member includes a clamp member and said defining step includes joining an inner face of said main body to an outer face of said clamp member along edges thereof.
- 4. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said insert member includes a punch and said defining step includes providing said punch on said second member.
- 5. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said clamping step includes moving said second member relative to said first member.
- 6. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said clamping step includes overcoming a force which resists movement of said second member relatively toward said first member and moving said second member relatively toward said first member by said overcoming step.
- 7. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said intermediate member includes storage tape media and said insert member includes a punch and said clamping step includes holding said storage tape media between said first member and said second member.
- 8. A method, as claimed in claim 7, wherein:
- said holding step includes causing said punch to contact said storage tape media in a direction substantially perpendicular to the length of said storage tape media.
- 9. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said first member includes a first leg and said second member includes a second leg and said first and second legs of said clamping device are made from a different material than said intermediate member.
- 10. A method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein:
- said clamping device is made from a non-metallic material and said intermediate member is made from a metallic material.
- 11. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said first member comprises a channel portion and at least part of said second member is disposed in said portion, said clamping step further comprising the step of moving said second relatively toward said first member to clamp said intermediate member between said first and second members.
- 12. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said clamping step comprises moving said second member relatively toward said first member to clamp said intermediate member between said first and second members before said moving said insert member step.
- 13. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- at least a part of said first and second members are rigidly connected to each other before said clamping step, and wherein said clamping step comprises severing said rigid connection between said first and second members and moving said second member relatively toward said first member to clamp said intermediate member between said first and second members.
- 14. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said clamping step further comprises moving said second member relatively toward said first member before said moving said insert member step, engaging said intermediate member between said first and second members, and suspending at least a portion of said intermediate member above a portion of said first member opposing said insert member, said moving said second member relatively toward said first member step comprising maintaining at least said portion of said intermediate member through which said insert member passes taut before said moving said insert step.
- 15. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said clamping step further comprises advancing a portion of said insert member within a cavity formed in said first member after moving said insert member through an entire thickness of said intermediate member.
- 16. A method, as claimed in claim 15, further comprising the step of:
- resisting axial movement of said intermediate member relative to said clamping device, said resisting axial movement step comprising providing a substantially mating engagement between said insert member and a portion of said second part interfacing with said insert member and between said portion of said insert member within said cavity in said first member and said cavity.
- 17. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said moving said insert member step comprises punching an opening through said intermediate member, said insert member having a blunt-shaped profile which interfaces with said intermediate member.
- 18. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:
- said insert member is rigidly connected to said second member before said moving said insert member step, said moving said insert member step comprising breaking said rigid connection between said insert member and said second member.
- 19. A method for securing a storage tape media to an integrally-formed one-piece leader block, said leader block comprising a first member with a channel and a cavity which intersects said channel, a second member interconnected with said first member, at least partially disposed within said channel, having a bottom surface spaced from a bottom surface of said channel to define a receiving cavity, and having a cavity at least partially aligned with said cavity in said first member, and a third member disposed at least partially within said cavity in said second member and interconnected with said second member, said method comprising the steps of:
- positioning said storage tape media within said receiving cavity;
- moving said second member relatively toward said first member, said moving said second member step comprising breaking said interconnection between said first and second members, compressively engaging at least a portion of said storage tape media between said first and second members, and maintaining said second member within said channel of said first member; and
- moving said third member relatively toward said first member and said storage tape media, said moving said third member step comprising breaking said interconnection between said third member and said second member, passing said third member through an entire thickness of said storage media tape and into said cavity of said first member, and retaining a portion of said third member within said cavity in said second member and retaining a portion of said third member within said cavity in said first member.
