Claims
- 1. Apparatus for feeding sheets in a shingled condition comprising:
- support means for supporting sheets in a stack in an upright position, a cradle for the stack formed by spaced, generally L-shaped members, means for pivotally supporting said cradle on a horizontal pivotal axis, one set of legs of the L-shaped members carrying conveying means therebetween, additional means for pivoting the cradle about said axis between a load position in which said conveying means and said one set of legs are horizontal and receive the stack moving horizontally from said supporting means, the stack entering between the other set of legs positioned vertically, and a feed position in which said other set of legs is horizontal, and load support means moved laterally into the space between said other set of legs of said cradle prior to pivotal movement of the cradle toward said feed position, a first conveyor means aligned with said cradle and having means operable to convey said sheets away from said cradle in said feed position, a gate positioned over said first conveyor means having a bottom end and defining an upwardly extending plane against which sheets upon said first conveyor means may form a second stack of sheets, and means connected to said gate operable to move said bottom end to and from said first conveyor means defining a varible passage through which sheets move from the bottom of said second stack in shingled fashion.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1 and further comprising:
- a mounting structure movably mounted to said first conveyor means and positionable at different locations along the length of said first conveyor means, said gate being mounted to said structure and vertically adjustable thereon.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said first conveyor means and mounting structure include an intermeshing channel and projection arrangement slidably supporting said structure on said first conveyor means.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein:
- said first conveyor means includes a first conveyor with said gate located thereon and
- a second conveyor located between said cradle and said first conveyor to move said sheets from said cradle to said first conveyor with said first conveyor pivotally mounted to said second conveyor.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1 in which sensing means is carried by said cradle which, when the cradle is in feed position, senses the position of the trailing margin of the last sheet previously deposited on the second conveyor, and thereby determining the amount of advancement of the means for pivotally supporting said cradle necessary to cover any feeding gap on the second conveyor.
- 6. Apparatus for feeding sheets comprising:
- first support means for centering and supporting a stack of sheets in upright position, a cradle for the stack formed by spaced, generally L-shaped members, the legs of the rspective members being pivotally movable at their junction to vary the included angle, motor means for producing such pivotal movement, a receiving conveyor to receive sheets from said cradle, second support means for pivotally supporting said cradle on a horizontal pivotal axis intermediate the ends of one set of the legs of the L-shaped members, means for pivoting the cradle about said axis between a load position in which said one set of the legs is substantially vertical and the other is substantially horizontal and a feed position in which both sets of legs are substantially horizontal, conveyor means carried by said first support means and said cradle for delivering the stack upright into the cradle in its said load position and for delivering sheets off the free end of said other set of legs when the cradle is in said feed position, said second support means being adapted for horizontal motion in the direction of feed of the sheets from the conveyor means, power means operable each time said cradle reaches feed position to advance said second support means, and thus said cradle, in the direction of feed of the sheets an amount sufficient to cover any feeding gap on the receiving conveyor caused by the excursion of the cradle through its load position for reloading, a second conveyor to accept sheets from said receiving conveyor, and gate means operably associated with said second conveyor and positioned thereabove operable to control the flow of sheets on said second conveyor in shingled fashion.
- 7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 in which sensing means is carried by said cradle which, when the cradle is in feed position, senses the position of the trailing margin of the last sheet previously deposited on the receiving conveyor, and thereby determining the amount of advancement of the second support means and cradle necessary to cover said feeding gap on the receiving conveyor.
- 8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 in which said motor means increases said included angle between said legs by an increment of the order of 15.degree. as said cradle is moved out of said load position and prior to said cradle reaching said feed position.
