Claims
- 1. A printer for transferring an image onto a recording sheet that is transported to a printing location between an input path and an output path comprising:
- output means for conveying a recording sheet along said output path;
- a cylindrical platen roller rotatable about a longitudinal axis of rotation and comprising a circumferential outer surface, said roller being rotatable in a rotation direction about said longitudinal axis and being disposed so that said circumferential surface substantially tangentially intersects said output path, said circumferential surface being sized to carry said recording sheet thereon;
- a clamping mechanism, moveably attached to said roller and extendable between at least a first clamper position and a second clamper position, said clamping mechanism comprising a clamper bar, said clamper bar being removed from pressing contact with said circumferential outer surface in said first clamper position and being sheet-securably pressed against said circumferential surface for rotation therewith in said second clamper position;
- control apparatus for controlling movement of said clamping mechanism between said first and second clamper positions, said control apparatus being operative to move said clamping mechanism to said first clamper position when a rotational position of said bar is proximate said output path;
- a thermal printing head disposed at said printing location and being moveable between a first position wherein said head is in operational contact with said circumferential surface for transferring images onto said recording sheet clamped to said surface and for applying a pressing force to said recording sheet, and a second position wherein said head is out of pressing contact with said surface but is disposed to assist in confining the flow of said recording sheet to said output means; and
- recording sheet guide means, operative in conjunction with said thermal head for assisting in confining the flow of said recording paper from a location proximate to a position where said clamper is in said first clamper position.
- 2. The printer as set forth in claim 1, wherein said clamping mechanism is operative to clamp at least the leading edge of said recording sheet.
- 3. A printer for transferring an image onto a recording sheet that is transported to a printing location between an input path and an output path comprising:
- an output structure for conveying a recording sheet along an output path, said structure comprising a discharge means for transporting said recording sheet along said output path;
- a cylindrical platen roller rotatable about a longitudinal axis of rotation and comprising a circumferential outer surface, said roller being located at said printing location and being disposed so that said circumferential surface is substantially tangential to said output path;
- a clamping mechanism, moveably attached to said roller and extendable between at least a first position and a second position, wherein said mechanism is operative to secure said recording sheet onto said circumferential surface in said first position and to release said recording sheet in said second position;
- a control mechanism, moveable between at least a first operative position, wherein said clamping mechanism is engaged and mechanically moved to said second position at a rotational position proximate said output path, wherein said clamping mechanism does not engage a recording sheet, and a second operative position wherein said clamping mechanism is in said first position;
- a thermal printing head disposed at said printing position and being moveable between a first position wherein said head is in operational contact with said circumferential surface for transferring images onto said recording sheet clamped to said surface and for applying a pressing force to said recording sheet, and a second position wherein said head is out of pressing contact with said surface but is disposed to assist in confining the flow of said recording sheet to said discharge means.
- 4. The printer as set forth in claim 3, further comprising control means for operating said control mechanism to move said clamping mechanism to said second position and to move said head to said second position upon completion of a printing operation.
- 5. The printer as set forth in claim 3, wherein said discharge means comprises transporting roller means, said clamping mechanism being moveable into said second position at a location proximate to said recording output structure for release of said sheet to said discharge means.
- 6. The printer as set forth in claim 4, wherein said thermal head is moveable out of operational contact with said circumferential surface after said clamping mechanism releases said recording sheet proximate to said output structure.
- 7. The printer as set forth in claim 3, wherein said recording sheet is clamped between said bar and said circumferential surface by moving said clamping mechanism to said first position, whereby the recording sheet may be held against said circumferential outer surface as said roller moves past said thermal head for printing, and wherein said recording sheet may be released to said output structure by moving said clamping mechanism to said second position.
- 8. The printer as set forth in claim 3, wherein a leading edge of said recording sheet is clamped to said circumferential surface and wrapped around said circumferential surface for printing thereon, and proximate to said output structure said clamping mechanism is moved to said second position, whereby said recording sheet may be passed to said output path.
