Claims
- 1. A plastic sheet extrusion system comprising:(a) a sheet extrusion die, (b) extruder means connected to feed plastic material continuously in a downstream direction to and through said die to form a plastic sheet, (c) at least one cooling system comprising at least one cooling roll adjacent said sheet extrusion die and connected to conduct and cool said plastic sheet from said sheet extrusion die, (d) a roller conveyor having a sheet carrying surface extending downstream of said cooling system and connected to receive said sheet from said cooling system, said conveyor extending substantially horizontally or inclined to the horizontal, (e) an accumulator comprising a moveable roller forming said sheet into at least one extendible and contractable accumulator loop extending substantially vertically or inclined to the vertical and said accumulator being integral with said roller conveyor, (f) a set of mechanically driven pull rolls downstream of said accumulator, and (g) an edge trimmer on said conveyor downstream of said accumulator.
- 2. The system defined in claim 1, further comprising:(a) a winder positioned to wind said plastic sheet on a take-up roll, whereby said accumulator serves to permit roll change at said winder at reduced speed or zero speed by temporarily accumulating in said accumulator the plastic sheet produced by said sheet extrusion die, and (b) means for increasing the speed of said pull rolls to empty said accumulator loop after said roll change has been completed.
- 3. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 1, wherein said extruder means comprises one or more extruders connected to continuously extrude a thermoplastic sheet through said die.
- 4. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 1 further comprising a plurality of said cooling systems downstream of said die for receiving said sheet from said die, cooling said sheet and feeding said sheet to said conveyor.
- 5. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 1, wherein said cooling system comprises a plurality of said cooling rolls.
- 6. A sheet extrusion system as defined in claim 2, wherein said accumulator comprises:(a) at least one fixed idler roller and at least one parallel acting idler roller positioned at least substantially adjacent said conveyor, said parallel acting idler roller defined by said moveable roller; and (b) a tensioning means positioned at least substantially adjacent said conveyor, operatively connected to said parallel acting idler roller for selectively displacing said parallel acting idler roller away from said fixed idler roller, extending the length of the sheet path and forming said at least one loop located substantially in said accumulator.
- 7. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 1, wherein :(a) said edge trimmer is positioned integrally with said conveyor and downstream of said accumulator for trimming said sheet to its desired width; (b) said set of driven pull rolls is positioned downstream of said edge trimmer for drawing said sheet longitudinally along said conveyor and pulling said sheet through said accumulator; and (c) said system further comprises a winder positioned to receive said sheet from said pull rolls and to produce a finite length roll of said sheet.
- 8. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 1, further comprising a control means adapted to control the accumulation of said sheet.
- 9. A sheet extrusion system as in claim 2, wherein said edge trimmer is positioned adjacent said conveyor at a location upstream of said winder.
