Claims
- 1. A connector assembly comprising:
a connector housing comprising a recess adapted to receive at least a portion of a modular plug, said modular plug having a plurality of terminals disposed thereon, said housing further comprising first and second portions; a first substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; a second substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; a plurality of first conductors disposed at least partly within said recess, said first conductors being configured to form an electrical contact with respective ones of said terminals when said modular plug is received within said recess, and form at least one electrical pathway between said first conductors and at least one of said plurality of conductive pathways of said first substrate; a plurality of second conductors, at least one of said second conductors being in electrical communication with respective ones of at least a portion of said plurality of electrically conductive pathways of said first substrate, and adapted to electrically interface with corresponding electrical pathways of said second substrate; and a cavity adapted to receive at least a portion of said first and second conductors and said first and second substrates therein; wherein said first and second portions of said housing cooperate to form at least a portion of said cavity when said housing portions are assembled.
- 2. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said first and second housing portions are substantially metallic.
- 3. The connector assembly of claim 2, wherein said metal comprises Zinc.
- 4. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said first and second substrates are substantially parallel.
- 5. The connector assembly of claim 4, wherein said first and second substrates are disposed in substantially horizontal fashion within said housing.
- 6. The connector assembly of claim 1, further comprising an edge connector, wherein said edge connector is comprised at least in part of a portion of at least one of said first and second substrates.
- 7. The connector assembly of claim 6, wherein said first and second housing portions further define an aperture, said aperture adapted to receive at least a portion of an external device for mating with said edge connector.
- 8. The connector assembly of claim 1, wherein said modular plug comprises an RJ-45 type plug, and said connector is adapted to pass at least some data at a rate greater than 1 Mbps.
- 9. A connector comprising:
a connector housing comprising a recess adapted to receive at least a portion of a modular plug, said modular plug having a plurality of terminals disposed thereon, said housing further comprising first and second portions; at least one substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; and a plurality of first conductors disposed at least partly within said recess, said first conductors being configured to form an electrical contact with respective ones of said terminals when said modular plug is received within said recess, and form at least one electrical pathway between said terminals and at least one of said plurality of conductive pathways of said first substrate; wherein said first and second housing portions comprise substantially metallic castings.
- 10. The connector of claim 9, further comprising an edge connector, wherein said edge connector is comprised at least in part of a portion of said at least one substrate.
- 11. The connector of claim 10, wherein said first and second housing portions further define an aperture, said aperture adapted to receive at least a portion of an external device for mating with said edge connector.
- 12. The connector of claim 9, wherein said modular plug comprises an RJ-45 type plug, and said connector is adapted to pass at least some data at a rate greater than 1 Mbps.
- 13. A connector comprising:
a connector housing comprising a recess adapted to receive at least a portion of a modular plug, said modular plug having a plurality of terminals disposed thereon, said housing further comprising at least one substantially metallic component adapted for shielding noise in or out of said connector; at least one substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; a plurality of electronic components electrically disposed within at least some of said conductive pathways; and a plurality of first conductors disposed at least partly within said recess, said first conductors being configured to form an electrical contact with respective ones of said terminals when said modular plug is received within said recess, and form at least one electrical pathway between said terminals and at least one of said plurality of conductive pathways of said first substrate.
- 14. The connector of claim 13, further comprising at least one LED, said at least one LED being viewable from a front face of said housing and electrically terminated to al least one of said conductive pathways of said at least one substrate.
- 15. A connector adapted for frontal insertion and removal from another structure, comprising:
a housing having a modular plug receiving port on its front face; a latch actuator disposed substantially proximate to said front face, said latch actuator being operatively coupled to a latch mechanism adapted to selectively engage a corresponding portion of said structure, the actuation of said actuator allowing at least removal of said connector from said structure.
- 16. The connector of claim 15, wherein said housing is substantially metallic.
- 17. The connector of claim 15, wherein said connector further comprises a rear edge connector adapted for mating with a corresponding connector associated with said structure.
- 18. The connector of claim 15, wherein said latch actuator is configured for actuation when a modular plug is received within said port.
- 19. The connector of claim 15, wherein said latch mechanism comprises a latch lever having a pivot, said latch actuator causing said lever to rotate around said pivot.
- 20. The connector of claim 15, wherein said latch actuator is a metal bail which rotates around a pivot, said pivot disposed substantially proximate to said front face.
- 21. A connector insert assembly adapted for being received within a connector housing, said insert assembly comprising first and second substrates disposed in substantial parallel and at least partly overlapping one another in the horizontal dimension, said first substrate having a plurality of conductors adapted for connecting to a modular plug, said second substrate having an edge connector adapted for connecting to a corresponding connector of an external device.
- 22. A method of manufacturing a low-noise connector, comprising;
forming an insert assembly having at least one substrate, conductors, and electronic components; casting a housing adapted to receive said insert assembly, said act of casting comprising casting first and second separable portions from metal; disposing said insert assembly within said first portion of said housing; and mating said second portion of said housing to said first portion; wherein said act of mating forms an electronic noise barrier substantially resistant to electronic noise transmission.
- 23. The method of claim 21, further comprising forming an edge connector as part of said at least one substrate, wherein said act of casting also comprises casting said first and second portions so as to form an aperture for said edge connector.
- 24. A method of performing maintenance on a connector-carrying structure, comprising:
actuating a latch actuator disposed proximate to the front face of said connector, said act of actuating causing disengaging of a latch mechanism latching said connector to said structure, said disengaging occurring at a location not immediately proximate to said front face; and removing said connector from said structure substantially concurrent with said act of actuating by exerting force on said connector in a direction substantially normal to said front face.
- 25. A shielded electrical connector, comprising:
a metallic housing having a front portion and rear portion, said front portion having at least one modular plug port disposed therein; a plurality of conductive pathways communicating with said at least one port; and a plurality of signal conditioning components disposed within said housing and electrically within at least a portion of said conductive pathways; wherein said rear portion is adapted to be received substantially within an external structure, said structure being configured to further mitigate noise transmission by said connector.
- 26. The electrical connector of claim 25, wherein substantially all of said signal conditioning components are disposed within the interior volume of said structure when said connector is received therein.
- 27. A connector assembly comprising:
a substantially metallic connector housing comprising a recess adapted to receive at least a portion of an RJ-45 modular plug, said modular plug having a plurality of terminals disposed thereon, said housing further comprising first and second portions; a first substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; a second substrate having a plurality of electrically conductive pathways associated therewith; a plurality of first conductors disposed at least partly within said recess, said first conductors being configured to form an electrical contact with respective ones of said terminals when said modular plug is received within said recess, and form at least one electrical pathway between said first conductors and at least one of said plurality of conductive pathways of said first substrate; a plurality of second conductors, at least one of said second conductors being in electrical communication with respective ones of at least a portion of said plurality of electrically conductive pathways of said first substrate, and adapted to electrically interface with corresponding electrical pathways of said second substrate; a cavity adapted to receive at least a portion of said first and second conductors and said first and second substrates therein; an edge-type connector comprised at least in part of a portion of one of said first and second substrates; and a latch mechanism adapted to allow selective removal of said connector from an external structure; wherein said first and second portions of said housing cooperate to form at least a portion of said cavity when said housing portions are assembled.
