Claims
- 1. An electrical connector for terminating a plurality of cables at a wire receiving end of said electrical connector, each of cables has at least one signal wire and a drain wire, said electrical connector comprising:
- first and second conductive outer housing means adapted to be mated together;
- ferrule means attached to at least one of said cables and coupled to said drain wire in said cable;
- bus bar means having resilient finger means, said bus bar means contacting said ferrule means and said finger means engaging at least one of said first and second outer housing means when said first and second outer housing means are mated together; and
- ground means disposed in said electrical connector and coupled to said bus bar means.
- 2. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 1 including cable receiving recesses adjacent said wire receiving end of said electrical connector in which said cables are disposed when said first and second outer housing means are mated together, said ferrule means engaging an inner surface of said wire receiving end to provide a cable strain relief for each of said cables.
- 3. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 1 including fastener means to secure said first and second outer housing means together.
- 4. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ferrule means includes an inner ferrule that is adapted to fit about one of said cables and an outer ferrule that is adapted to fit about said inner ferrule with at least said drain wire disposed between said inner and outer ferrules, said drain wire being captured in between said inner and outer ferrule by the crimping of said outer ferrule onto said inner ferrule.
- 5. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 4 wherein said inner ferrule has at least one flat outer surface on which said drain wire is positioned prior to the crimping of said outer ferrule onto said inner ferrule.
- 6. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ferrule means is adapted to be positioned about an outer insulation of said cable and includes a slot into which said drain wire of said cable is disposed, said ferrule means being maintained on said insulation by crimping said ferrule means whereby said drain wire is captured in said slot and electrically coupled to said ferrule means.
- 7. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 6 wherein said slot is V-shaped.
- 8. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 6 wherein said slot is keyhole shaped.
- 9. An electrical connector for terminating a plurality of cables, each of said cable has at least one signal wire and a drain wire, said electrical connector comprising:
- first and second conductive outer housing means adapted to be mated together, said first outer housing means having a first base wall and first opposed sidewalls extending from said first base wall between a front mating end of said electrical connector and a rear wire receiving end of said electrical connector and said second outer housing means having a second base wall and second opposed sidewalls extending from said second base wall between said mating end and said rear wire receiving end;
- a plurality of first separating walls extending from said first base wall between said first sidewalls;
- a plurality of second separating walls extending from said second base wall between said second sidewalls;
- a plurality of contact modules into which is received terminals connected to said signal wires, said contact modules being positioned in channels formed by adjacent ones of said first and second separating walls when said first and second outer housing means are mated together;
- ferrule means attached to said cables and coupled to said drain wire in each of said cables;
- bus bar means having resilient finger means, said bus bar means contacting said ferrule means and said finger means engaging at least one of said first and second outer housing means when said first and second outer housing means are mated together; and
- ground means coupled to said bus bar means.
- 10. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 including cable receiving recesses adjacent said wire receiving end of said electrical connector in which said cables are disposed when said first and second outer housing means are mated together, said ferrule means engaging an inner surface of said rear wire receiving end to provide a cable strain relief for said cables.
- 11. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein each of said first separating walls has a first stepped edge and each of said second separating walls has a second stepped edge, said first and second stepped edges being complementary so as to interfit together when said first and second outer housing means are mated together.
- 12. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 including fastener means to secure said first and second outer housing means together.
- 13. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein said terminals connected to said signal wires are mounted in said contact modules so as to be stacked into two rows between said first and second outer housing means.
- 14. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein said first and second separating walls are conductive to provide shielded compartments within said electrical connector for each said contact module when said contact modules are disposed in said channels formed between said first and second separating walls.
- 15. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein the center-line to center-line spacing between terminals disposed in adjacent contact modules is about 0.125 inches.
- 16. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein said first and second separating walls include positioning slots and each of said contact modules includes a positioning rib that is adapted to be disposed in one of said positioning slots for positioning said contact module in between adjacent ones of said first and second separating walls when said first and second outer housing means are mated together.
- 17. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein said ferrule means is adapted to be positioned about an outer insulation of said cable and includes a slot into which said drain wire of said cable is disposed, said ferrule means being maintained on said insulation by crimping said ferrule means whereby said drain wire is captured in said slot and electrically coupled to said ferrule means.
- 18. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 including bus bar retention means on which said bus bar means is mounted when said first and second outer housing means are mated together.
- 19. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 18 wherein said bus bar retention means extends from said first outer housing means.
- 20. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein each of said ferrule means includes an inner ferrule that is adapted to fit about one of said cables and an outer ferrule that is adapted to fit about said inner ferrule with at least said drain wire disposed between said inner and outer ferrules, said drain wire being captured in between said inner and outer ferrule by the crimping of said outer ferrule onto said inner ferrule.
- 21. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 20 wherein said inner ferrule has at least one flat outer surface on which said drain wire is positioned prior to the crimping of said outer ferrule onto said inner ferrule.
- 22. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 21 wherein said slot is V-shaped.
- 23. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 21 wherein said slot is keyhole shaped.
- 24. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 9 wherein said ground means includes ground terminals disposed in ground contact modules that are disposed in channels formed at least in part by said first and second separating walls, said ground terminals being coupled to said bus bar means.
- 25. The electrical connector as set forth in claim 24 including jumper wires coupled to said ground terminals for coupling said ground terminals to said bus bar means, said jumper wires being coupled to at least one of said ferrule means.
