Claims
- 1. A shirred casing article comprising:
- a. a disposable tubular support including means for releasably mounting said support on a stuffing machine such that the product to be stuffed passes through said tubular support;
- b. a shirred and compacted casing supply on said tubular support, said supply having an unshirred portion extendable forward over an end of said tubular support;
- c. casing holdback means fixed on said tubular support adjacent said end and disposable within said unshirred portion, and said holdback means including a rigid member adapted to contact against the inner surface of said unshirred portion;
- d. said member being movable with respect to said tubular support while within said unshirred portion between at least two positions for altering the contact between said member and said unshirred portion and for producing thereby casing holdback forces of at least two magnitudes; and
- e. said member having a portion adapted for cooperative engagement with a stuffing machine control element pressable against the outside of said unshirred portion, and said member disposed within said unshirred portion being movable between said two positions responsive to said cooperative engagement.
- 2. A shirred casing article as in claim 1, wherein said adjustable internal holdback means is movable about a pivotal axis which extends generally perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said tubular support.
- 3. A shirred casing article as in claim 2 wherein said adjustable internal holdback means at one of said positions is oriented toward a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said tubular support to obtain a greater holdback force and at a second of said positions is tilted from said plane to obtain a lesser holdback force.
- 4. A casing article as in claim 3 wherein said member comprises a ring disposed about and pivotally connected to said tubular support, said ring having an outer rim for engaging against the inner periphery of said unshirred portion of casing, and wherein said second position has as its limit the engagement of said rim against said tubular support as said rim is tilted from said plane.
- 5. A casing article as in claim 4 including tabs located on the inner periphery of said rim and oriented on an axis at right angles to said pivotal axis, said tabs engaging said tubular support to define the limit of said second position.
