Claims
- 1. A shunt connected energy stabilizing system for stabilizing the operation of an electrical power system and the loads connected thereto by energy support of the loads and disconnecting the loads from the electrical power system, or by simultaneously providing power to the electrical power system and the loads, said shunt connected energy stabilizing system comprising:
- an energy backup and recovery system means for charging a superconducting energy storage device, storing energy and releasing energy in the form of direct current, said energy backup and recovery system having a superconducting inductive energy storage device, input terminals, output terminals, and control terminal means for carrying control signals, said input terminals coupled to the electrical power distribution system;
- isolation switching means for isolating the loads from the electrical power system, said isolation switching means coupled to the electrical power system and to the loads and providing a current path between the electrical power system and the loads, said isolation switching means coupled to said control terminal means; and
- a power generator means for generating power from direct current, said power generator means having input leads, output leads, and control lead means for carrying control signals, said input leads connected to said output terminals of said energy backup and recovery system means, said output leads coupled to said isolation switching means between said isolation switching means and the loads, and said control lead means coupled to said control terminal means.
- 2. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 1 wherein said power generator means includes means for generating real power.
- 3. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 1 wherein said power generator means includes means for generating reactive power.
- 4. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 1 wherein said isolation switching means comprises an isolation switch coupled to each line of said electrical distribution system.
- 5. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 1 wherein said isolation switch comprises a pair of back-to-back gate turn-off devices or thyristors.
- 6. A shunt connected energy stabilizing system for stabilizing the operation of a three-phase electrical power system and the loads connected thereto by energy support of the loads through load shedding or by simultaneously providing power to the electrical power system and the loads, said shunt connected energy stabilizing system comprising:
- an energy backup and recovery system means for charging a superconducting energy storage device, storing energy and releasing energy in the form of direct current, said energy backup and recovery system having a superconducting inductive energy storage device, input terminals, output terminals, and control terminal means for carrying control signals, said input terminals coupled to the three-phase electrical power system;
- isolation switching means for isolating the loads from the three-phase electrical power system, said isolation switching means coupled to the three-phase electrical power system and to the loads and providing a current path between the three-phase electrical power system and the loads, said isolation switching means coupled to said control terminal means; and
- a real power/reactive power generator means for generating real power and reactive power from direct current, said real power/reactive power generator means having input leads, output leads, and control lead means for carrying control signals, said input leads connected to said output terminals of said energy backup and recovery system means, said output leads coupled to said isolation switching means between said isolation switching means and the loads, and said control lead means coupled to said control terminal means.
- 7. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 6 wherein said isolation switching means comprises an isolation switch coupled to each line of said three-phase electrical system.
- 8. The shunt connected energy stabilizing system of claim 7 wherein said isolation switch comprises a pair of back to back gate turn-off devices or thyristors.

This is a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 08/062,709 filed May 14, 1993, now U.S. Pat. No. 5,376,828 issued Dec. 24, 1994, entitled "Shunt Connected Superconducting Energy Stabilizing System", which is in turn a continuation of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 724,409 filed Jul. 1, 1991, now abandoned.
