Claims
- 1. A side loading refuse vehicle, comprising:
- an elongated refuse storage tank divided into a plurality of longitudinally extending tank sections;
- a loading mechanism adjacent a side of the refuse vehicle; and
- a refuse transfer mechanism for delivering refuse emptied into the vehicle by the loading mechanism to the respective tank sections, wherein the refuse transfer mechanism comprises a hopper and an oscillating blade disposed in the hopper for sweeping through the hopper and alternately sweeping refuse delivered into the hopper by the loading mechanism to a first side and then to a second side of the hopper as the blade oscillates back and forth within the hopper, the refuse transfer mechanism further comprising moveable hopper closure means to partially close the hopper behind the blade so as to selectively prevent refuse from being delivered to the first side of the hopper or the second side of the hopper as the blade travels through the hopper.
- 2. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the plurality of tank sections comprise upper and lower storage regions having forward and rearward ends, and respective upper and lower entrances adjacent respective forward ends, and wherein the refuse transfer mechanism further comprises upper and lower transfer mechanisms for selectively diverting refuse through respective upper and lower entrances to respective upper and lower storage regions.
- 3. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 1, further comprising a conveyor located in one of the plurality of tank sections for conveying refuse along the one of the plurality of tank sections, the conveyor being one of an endless belt conveyor and a travelling floor conveyor.
- 4. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the hopper has a generally semi-circular plan section and a plurality of quadrants and the moveable hopper closure means comprises a refuse spill plate forming a generally horizontal closure for one of the plurality of quadrants of the hopper and adjacent quadrants of the hopper, are alternately and progressively closed and opened by the plate as the blade travels through the hopper, thereby separating refuse and delivering refuse into the hopper on top of the plate and then subsequently to a position below the plate.
- 5. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 4, wherein each of the plurality of tank sections includes a tank section entrance and the blade travels back and forth through a 180.degree. arc between respective tank section entrances at respective ends of a forward stroke of the blade during a last 90.degree. of travel toward a tank section entrance, and relative motion of the blade and the plate includes lost motion between the blade and the plate during a portion when the blade travels through an initial 90.degree. of movement away from a tank section entrance.
- 6. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 2, wherein the refuse transfer mechanism employs an elevator to raise refuse to an upper tank section.
- 7. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 2, further comprising a plurality of independent hopper regions for selectively receiving refuse from a multi-compartment bin as the bin is emptied by the loading mechanism.
- 8. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 7, wherein the refuse transfer mechanism includes an elevator having upper and lower ends, the independent hopper regions include respective distal and proximal regions relative to the loading mechanism, the distal and proximal regions being sub-divided into an upper region having an upper sub-hopper, and a lower region having a lower sub-hopper containing the lower end of the elevator.
- 9. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 2, wherein the upper storage region includes a sloping floor sloping toward the forward end of the upper storage region so that as the vehicle travels the sloping floor causes compaction of refuse toward the forward end of the upper storage region.
- 10. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 2, wherein the upper transfer mechanism comprises a conveyor assembly having an upwardly and rearwardly extending conveyor for moving refuse from the upper entrance of the upper storage region to the rearward end of the upper storage region.
- 11. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein said oscillating blade comprises a compactor assembly.
- 12. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 3, wherein the refuse storage tank is arcuate in cross section and the travelling floor is arcuate, thereby at least partially matching a shape of the tank section.
- 13. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 1, wherein the loading mechanism is coupled to the vehicle with a retractable arm assembly.
- 14. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 2, wherein the loading mechanism is coupled to the vehicle with a retractable arm assembly.
- 15. A side loading refuse vehicle as recited in claim 3, wherein the loading mechanism is coupled to the vehicle with a retractable arm assembly.
