Claims
- 1. A product prepared by the process comprising heating a composition comprising (1) from about 20% to about 98% silicon nitride, (2) from about 0.5% to about 20% of a silicate glass-forming sintering aid, and (3) from about 0.001% to about 80% of a high metal content transition metal silicide, all percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the composition, to a temperature of about 1300.degree. C. to about 1800.degree. C. under vacuum until silicate glass forms, oxygen is removed from the silicate glass as SiO gas, and the glass crystallizes.
- 2. A product prepared by the process comprising heating a composition comprising (1) from about 20% to about 98% silicon nitride, (2) from about 0.5% to about 20% of a silicate glass-forming sintering aid, and (3) from about 0.001% to about 80% of a high metal content transition metal silicide, all percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the composition, to a temperature of about 1300.degree. C. to about 1800.degree. C. under vacuum until silicate glass forms, oxygen is removed from the silicate glass as SiO gas, the composition densifies, and the glass crystallizes.
- 3. A product produced by the process comprising heating a sintered composition comprising (1) from about 20% to about 98% silicon nitride, (2) from about 0.5% to about 20% of a silicate glass, and (3) from about 0.001% to about 80% of a high metal content transition metal silicide, all percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the composition, to a temperature of at least about 1300.degree. C. under vacuum until oxygen is removed from the silicate glass as SiO gas and the glass crystallizes.
- 4. A product produced by the process comprising heating a sintered composition comprising (1) from about 20% to about 98% silicon nitride, (2) from about 0.5% to about 20% of a silicate glass, and (3) from about 0.001% to about 80% of a high metal content transition metal silicide, all percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the composition, to a temperature of between about 1300.degree. C. to about 1800.degree. C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere until the sintered ceramic densifies, and then further heating at a temperature of at least about 1300.degree. C. under vacuum until oxygen is removed from the silicate glass as SiO gas and the glass crystallizes.
- 5. A product prepared by the process comprising heating a composition comprising (1) from about 20% to about 98% silicon nitride, (2) from about 0.5% to about 60% of a silicate glass-forming sintering aid, and (3) from about 0.001% to about 40% of a transition metal, all percentages being by weight based on the total weight of the composition, to a temperature of 1300.degree. C. to 1800.degree. C. under vacuum until silicate glass forms, oxygen is removed from the silicate glass as SiO gas, and the glass crystallizes.
- 6. The product of claim 1, wherein the metal silicide in said composition is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 40%.
- 7. The product of claim 1, wherein the sintering aid in said composition comprises a combination of aluminum oxide and yttrium oxide.
- 8. The product of claim 1, wherein the high metal content silicide in said composition comprises at least one silicide of at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd and Pt.
- 9. The product of claim 2, wherein the metal silicide in said composition is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 1%.
- 10. The product of claim 2, wherein the metal silicide in said composition is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 40%.
- 11. The product of claim 2, wherein the sintering aid in said composition comprises a combination of aluminum oxide and yttrium oxide.
- 12. The product of claim 2, wherein the high metal content silicide in said composition comprises at least one silicide selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd and Pt.
- 13. The product of claim 12, wherein the high metal content silicide comprises at least one silicide of at least one of Co, Rh and Ir.
- 14. The product of claim 3, wherein the metal silicide is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 1%.
- 15. The product of claim 3, wherein the silicate glass comprising an aluminum- and yttrium-containing glass.
- 16. The product of claim 3, wherein the transition metal silicide comprises at least one high metal content silicide selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd and Pt.
- 17. The product of claim 4, wherein the metal silicide is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 1%.
- 18. The product of claim 4, wherein the metal silicide is present in an amount of about 0.001% to about 40%.
- 19. The product of claim 4, wherein the silicate glass comprises an aluminum- and yttrium-containing glass.
- 20. The product of claim 4, wherein the transition metal silicide comprises at least one high metal content silicide selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ru, Os, Co, Rh, Ir, Ni, Pd and Pt.
- 21. The product of claim 20, wherein the transition metal silicide comprises at least one high metal content silicide selected from the group consisting of Co, Rh and Ir.
