Claims
- 1. An abrasion resistant coated plastic transparency comprising:
a. a rigid transparent plastic substrate; and b. a siloxane organic hybrid polymer coating formed from an organoalkoxysilane or a mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl and acrylic-functional groups, R′ is an alkyl group selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl, and x is at least one and less than 4, and polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 2. An article according to claim 1, wherein said coating comprises the reaction product of an organoalkoxysilane of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R′ is selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl.
- 3. An article according to claim 2, wherein the rigid transparent plastic is selected from the group consisting of acrylic and polycarbonate.
- 4. An article according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of organoalkoxysilane to polyvinylpyrrolidone is about 30.
- 5. A siloxane organic hybrid polymer comprising the reaction product of:
a. an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl and acrylic-functional groups, R′ is a low molecular weight alkyl group forming a hydrolyzable alkoxy, and x is at least one and less than 4; and b. a water soluble organic film-forming polymer.
- 6. A siloxane hybrid polymer according to claim 5, wherein R′ is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl.
- 7. A siloxane hybrid polymer according to claim 6, wherein R is selected from the group consisting of methyl, ethyl and δ-methacryloxypropyl groups.
- 8. A siloxane hybrid polymer according to claim 5, wherein said organic film-forming polymer is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 9. A siloxane hybrid polymer according to claim 8, wherein the weight ratio of silane to polyvinylpyrrolidone is about 30.
- 10. A method of making a siloxane organic hybrid polymer comprising the steps of:
a. hydrolyzing an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl and acrylic-functional groups, R′ is a low molecular weight alkyl group forming a hydrolyzable alkoxy, and x is at least one and less than 4; and b. condensing and polymerizing said organoalkoxy silane in an aqueous solution of an organic film-forming polymer to form a siloxane organic hybrid polymer.
- 11. An abrasion resistant coated plastic transparency comprising a rigid transparent plastic substrate, and a siloxane organic hybrid polymer coating wherein said coating comprises the reaction product of:
a. an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical, R′ is a low molecular weight alkyl group forming a hydrolyzable alkoxy, and x is at least one and less than 4; b. an alkali metal carboxylic acid catalyst; and c. an organic film-forming polymer.
- 12. An article according to claim 11, wherein said catalyst is sodium acetate and said polymer is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 13. A method of making a siloxane organic hybrid polymer comprising the steps of:
a. hydrolyzing an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilane of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical, R′ is a hydrolyzable low molecular weight alkyl group, and x is at least one less than 4; b. catalyzing the reaction with an alkali metal carboxylic acid; and c. condensing and polymerizing said silane in the presence of an organic film-forming polymer to form a siloxane organic hybrid polymer.
- 14. An abrasion resistant and ultraviolet radiation resistant coated plastic transparency comprising:
a. a rigid transparent plastic substrate; and b. a siloxane coating containing cerium oxide and sodium acetate.
- 15. An article according to claim 14, wherein said coating comprises the reaction product of:
a. an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical, R′ is a hydrolyzable low molecular weight alkyl group, and x is at least one and less than 4; b. an organic film-forming polymer; and c. colloidal cerium oxide.
- 16. An article according to claim 15, wherein the rigid transparent plastic is selected from the group consisting of acrylic and polycarbonate.
- 17. A siloxane organic hybrid polymer composition comprising the reaction product of:
a. an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl and acrylic functional groups, R′ is a low molecular weight alkyl group, and x is at least one and less than 4; b. a water soluble organic film-forming polymer; and c. cerium oxide.
- 18. A siloxane hybrid polymer according to claim 17, wherein said organic film-forming polymer is polyvinylpyrrolidone.
- 19. An organic-inorganic hybrid polymer according to claim 18, wherein the cerium oxide is in the form of colloidal ceria.
- 20. A method of making a siloxane organic hybrid polymer comprising the steps of:
a. hydrolyzing an organoalkoxysilane or mixture of organoalkoxysilanes of the general formula RxSi(OR′)4-x wherein R is an organic radical selected from the group consisting of alkyl and acrylic-functional groups, R′ is a hydrolyzable low molecular weight alkyl group, and x is at least one less than 4; and b. condensing and polymerizing said silane in an aqueous mixture of an organic film-forming polymer and cerium oxide to form a siloxane organic hybrid polymer.
