Claims
- 1. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer having the formula: ##STR6## wherein: R is H, --(CH.sub.2).sub.x --COOH, --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, CH.sub.3, C.sub.6 H.sub.5, --C.dbd.CH, ##STR7## CF.sub.3 or --(CH.sub.2).sub.x NH.sub.2, X is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 3,
- R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 may be the same or different and are lower alkyl, aryl, --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, ##STR8## --(CH.sub.2).sub.y NH.sub.2, CF.sub.3 or CONH.sub.2, m is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 50,000,
- R.sub.3 is lower alkyl, aryl, --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, ##STR9## or --(CH.sub.2).sub.y --NH.sub.2, A is alkylene having from 2 to 10 carbon atoms,
- R.sub.4 and R.sub.4 may be the same or different and are lower alkyl, aryl, --CH.dbd.CH.sub.2, ##STR10## --(CH.sub.2).sub.n NH.sub.2, CF.sub.3, --CONH.sub.2 R.sub.6 is H, --CH.sub.3 --C.sub.2 H.sub.5,
- y is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 3,
- n is an integer in the range of from about 1 to about 50,000;
- z is an integer in the range of from 1 to about 5000; or a salt thereof.
- 2. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic plastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R is H.
- 3. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are methyl.
- 4. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are phenyl.
- 5. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.3 is methyl.
- 6. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein A is propylene.
- 7. A poly siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each methyl.
- 8. A poly(siloxane-pivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer according to claim 1 wherein R is H, R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are each methyl or phenyl, R.sub.3 is methyl,
- R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 are each methyl
- A is propylene and R.sub.6 is H.
- 9. A method for preparing a poly(siloxanepivalolactone) thermoplastic elastomer comprising copolymerizing in a solvent an elastomeric polysiloxane containing a carboxylate salt group and pivalolactone in the presence of a medium which separates the cation well from said carboxylate anion, and converts the carboxylate anion into an initiator for copolymerization therewith of said lactone.
- 10. The method of claim 9 wherein said medium is 18-crown-6.
- 11. An article of manufacture comprising the copolymer of claim 2.
- 12. An article of manufacture according to claim 11 in the form of a fiber.
- 13. An article of manufacture according to claim 11 in the form of a film.
- 14. An article of manufacture according to claim 11 in the form of a molded object.
