Claims
- 1. A one-package system for preparing an antifouling coating for marine surfaces comprising:
- (a) a hydrolyzable siloxane for forming a solid binder, the siloxane having the formula: ##STR20## where m is from 1 to about 10, where each X is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkoxyalkyl radicals containing less than about 6 carbon atoms and Y,
- where Y has the formula: ##STR21## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and cycloalkyl radicals, where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 contain in combination up to about 18 carbon atoms, the siloxane in the kit being capable of hydrolysis and cross-linking polycondensation to form a solid film, and
- where the X's are selected so the ratio of tin atoms to silicon atoms in the siloxane is from about 1:50 to about 2:5;
- (b) an acid source of protons sufficient to create an acid condition; and
- (c) a filler nondeleteriously reactive with the source of protons.
- 2. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of the tripropyl, tributyl, and tricyclohexyl tin radicals.
- 3. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein each X is selected from the group consisting of ethyl radical and Y.
- 4. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the ratio of tin atoms to silicon atoms in the precursor is from about 1:12 to about 1:3.
- 5. A system as claimed in claim 1 wherein the siloxane is from about 70 to about 90% hydrolyzed.
- 6. A one-package kit for preparing an antifouling coating for marine surfaces comprising:
- (a) a hydrolyzable siloxane for forming a solid binder, the siloxane having the formula: ##STR22## where m is from 1 to about 10, where each X is independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and alkoxyalkyl radicals containing less than about 6 carbon atoms and Y,
- where Y has the formula: ##STR23## where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl and cycloalkyl radicals, where R.sub.1, R.sub.2, and R.sub.3 contain in combination up to about 18 carbon atoms, the siloxane in the kit being capabale of hydrolysis and cross-linking polycondensation to form a solid film, and
- where the X's are selected so the ratio of tin atoms to silicon atoms in the siloxane is from about 1:50 to about 2:5;
- (b) a hydroxyl ion source sufficient to create a basic condition; and
- (c) a filler nondeleteriously reactive with the hydroxyl ion source.
- 7. A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein Y is selected from the group consisting of tripropyl, tributyl and tricyclohexyl tin radicals.
- 8. A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein each X is selected from the group consisting of the ethyl radical and Y.
- 9. A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the ratio of tin atoms to silicon atoms in the siloxane is from about 1:12 to about 1:3.
- 10. A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the filler comprises zinc oxide.
- 11. A system as claimed in claim 6 wherein the filler comprises metallic zinc.
- 12. A one package system as claimed in claim 1 where m is an average of about 5.
- 13. A one package kit as claimed in claim 6 where m is an average of about 5.
