Claims
- 1. A color display system comprising:
- (a) a light valve having an array of rows of addressable pixels for modulating light impinging on the light valve in accordance with display signals applied to the pixels;
- (b) means for providing at least two light beams, each beam having a different color, and each beam being wider in the direction of the width of the pixel rows to be addressed and narrower in the direction of the height of the pixel rows to be addressed;
- (c) means for repeatedly sweeping the beams sequentially across a surface of the light valve in the height direction in a manner that each of the at least two different color beams illuminates only a portion of the pixel rows to be addressed at any one time, whereby each addressable pixel row of the light valve is repeatedly impinged by the at least two different color beams in sequence; and
- (d) means for repeatedly addressing the rows of pixels of the light valve in sequence with display signals corresponding to the color of the beam to impinge on the pixels being addressed, so as to form a color display image.
- 2. The color display system of claim 1 in which means are provided for defining the cross-section of each of the beams to a band shape.
- 3. The color display system of claim 1 in which there are three beams, each beam having one of the primary colors red, blue and green.
- 4. The color display system of claim 1 in which the light valve is a transmissive light valve.
- 5. The color display system of claim 4 in which the light valve is an LCD.
- 6. The color display system of claim 1 in which the width of the beams corresponds approximately to the width of the light valve.
- 7. The color display system of claim 1 in which the means for providing the different colored light beams comprises a source of white light and means for separating the white light into components.
- 8. The color display system of claim 7 in which the separating means comprises one or more dichroic elements.
- 9. The color display system of claim 7 in which the separating means comprises a color wheel.
- 10. The color display system of claim 1 in which the means for scanning the bands comprises a rotatable prism with a plurality of optical facets.
- 11. The color display system of claim 10 in which the optical facets are light transmissive and scanning of the beams is by refraction.
- 12. The color display system of claim 10 in which the prism has four optical facets.
- 13. The color display system of claim 12 in which the surfaces of the facets are concave.
- 14. The color display system of claim 1 in which means are provided for projecting the display image.
- 15. The color display system of claim 14 which includes a projection screen.
- 16. The color display system of claim 1 in which the scanning of the color beams is substantially linear.
- 17. The color display system of claim 16 in which the color beams are substantially equally spaced from one another.
- 18. The color display system of claim 1 in which at least a portion of each of the beams are simultaneously present on the surface of the light valve with the other beams.
