Claims
- 1. An access port for loading tape cartridges, one at a time, into and retrieving tape cartridges from an automated tape cartridge library system; said access port comprising:
- an enclosure panel of said automated tape cartridge library system; said panel having an exterior side exterior to said automated tape cartridge library system and a rear side internal to said automated tape cartridge library system;
- an opening formed in said panel with said opening being defined by wall portions of said panel;
- door means mounted in said opening and dimensioned so as to substantially fill the area defined by said opening;
- cartridge tray means mounted on a back side of said door means for enabling a tape cartridge to be inserted into and removed from said tape cartridge tray means; and
- pivot means affixed to said door means for enabling said door means to be rotated within said opening for transferring a tape cartridge in said cartridge tray means between a first position exterior to said automated tape cartridge library system and a second position interior to said automated tape cartridge library system; and
- shield means comprising a part of said door means for blocking substantially all of said opening to prevent operator access to said interior via said opening when said door means is rotated during the transfer of a tape cartridge between said first position of said door means and said second position of said door means.
- 2. The access port of claim 1 wherein said door means is rotatably mounted in said opening to pivot between said first position and said second position while blocking said opening to prevent operator access to said interior.
- 3. The access port of claim 1 wherein said cartridge tray means include means for sensing the presence of a tape cartridge fully inserted into said cartridge tray means.
- 4. The access port of claim 1 wherein said cartridge tray means is slanted downward to prevent accidental dislodgement of a cartridge in said cartridge tray means and to accurately position a tape cartridge in said cartridge tray means.
- 5. The access port of claim 4 wherein said cartridge tray means include means for sensing the presence of a tape cartridge fully inserted into said cartridge tray means.
- 6. The access port of claim 1 wherein said cartridge tray means include means for providing a reference point for enabling said automated tape cartridge library system to retrieve a tape cartridge from said cartridge tray means or to load a tape cartridge into said cartridge tray means.
- 7. The access port of claim 2 wherein said access port further comprises means for latching said door means to prevent accidental pivotal movement of said door means.
- 8. The access port of claim 7 wherein said access port further comprises means for actuating a latch of said door means to allow said door means to be rotated between said first and second positions.
- 9. The access port of claim 1 wherein said access port further comprises means for controlling the operation of said access port.
- 10. The access port of claim 9 wherein said control means include priority over other operations of said library system.
- 11. An access port for loading tape cartridges, one at a time, into and retrieving tape cartridges from automated tape cartridge library system; said access port comprising:
- a front panel of said automated tape cartridge library system;
- an opening in said panel defined by a plurality of walls in said panel;
- an exterior side of said panel exterior to said automated tape cartridge library system;
- a rear side of said panel internal to said automated tape cartridge library system;
- door means positioned within said opening and dimensioned so as to substantially fill the open area defined by said opening;
- cartridge tray means affixed to a back side of said door means for enabling a tape cartridge to be inserted into said cartridge tray means while said door is in either one of said first position or said second position and to be retrieved from said cartridge tray means while said door is in the other of said first position or said second position;
- pivot means affixed to said door means for enabling said door means to rotate within said opening for transferring a tape cartridge in said cartridge tray means between a first position on the exterior of said automated tape cartridge library system and a second position on the interior of said automated tape cartridge library system; and
- shield means comprising a part of said door means for blocking said opening when said door is rotated within said opening to prevent operator access to said interior via said opening.
- 12. The access port of claim 11 wherein said cartridge tray means is slanted downward to prevent accidental dislodgement of a tape cartridge in said cartridge tray means and to accurately position tape cartridges in said cartridge tray means; and
- said cartridge tray means including means for sensing the presence of a fully inserted tape cartridge in said cartridge tray means.
- 13. The access port of claim 11 wherein said cartridge tray means include means for providing a reference point for said automated tape cartridge library system to retrieve a tape cartridge from said cartridge tray means or to load a tape cartridge into said cartridge tray means.
- 14. The access port of claim 11 wherein said access port further comprises:
- means for latching said door means to prevent accidental movement of said door means; and
- means for actuating said latching means to prevent said latch means from accidentally unlatching said door means.
- 15. The access port of claim 11 wherein said access port further comprises means for controlling the operation of said access port.
- 16. The access port of claim 15 wherein said control means include priority over other operations of said library system.
- 17. The access port of claim 12 wherein said shield means comprises:
- a front panel of said door means;
- a top interior plate of said door means;
- a lower interior plate of said door means;
- right and left side interior housing plates of said door means;
- a guard means affixed to an upper portion of said left side interior housing plate; and
- a curved member affixed to an interior rear vertical edge of said right side housing plate.
- 18. An access port for loading tape cartridges, one at a time, into and retrieving tape cartridges from automated tape cartridge library system; said access port comprising:
- a front panel of said automated tape cartridge library system;
- an opening in said panel defined by a plurality of walls in said panel;
- an exterior side of said panel exterior to said automated tape cartridge library system;
- a rear side of said panel internal to said automated tape cartridge library system;
- door means positioned within said opening and dimensioned so as to substantially fill the open area defined by said opening;
- pivot means affixed to said door means for enabling said door means to rotate between a first position on the exterior of said automated tape cartridge library system and a second position on the interior of said automated tape cartridge library system;
- cartridge tray means affixed to a back side of said door means for enabling a tape cartridge to be inserted into said cartridge tray means while said door is in either one of said first position or said second position and to be retrieved from said cartridge tray means while said door is in the other of said first position or said second position; and
