Claims
- 1. In a retractable side wheel-equipped single-track vehicle, an apparatus comprising:
- first and second tube segments;
- means for mounting said first and second tube segments such that each said tube segment is disposed on a respective axis lying transverse to the track of said single-track vehicle and such that each said segment is pivotable about its respective axis independently of the other of said tube segments;
- respective first and second hanging foot pedal means fixedly attached to and depending respectively from said first and second tube segments for applying torque for respectively pivoting said first and second tube segments about their respective axes in response to driver foot activation;
- respective first and second push-pull tubes;
- respective first and second rotatably-mounted longitudinal torque tubes;
- first and second upper crank arms having respective first ends rigidly connected to respective first ends of the first and second tube segments, said first and second upper crank arms being pivotally connected at their respective second ends to a first respective end of said first and second push-pull tubes;
- first and second lower crank arms, each rigidly connected at first ends thereof to the respective longitudinal torque tubes, and pivotally connected at their respective second ends to a second end of the said respective first and second push-pull tubes; and
- first and second mounting arms, each having a side wheel thereon and being connected to a respective one of the first and second longitudinal torque tubes, whereby movement of the first hanging foot pedal lever means commands movement of the first side wheel and movement of the second hanging foot pedal lever means commands movement of the second side wheel.
- 2. A single-track vehicle comprising:
- a retractable side wheel system having first and second pivotally-mounted caster side wheels; and
- means for confining the range of free pivotal motion of said caster side wheels to a pivoting range of 180-degrees or less, the pivoting range beginning at a first limit constituting a limit position wherein the caster is in a tracking position corresponding to straight-ahead vehicle motion such that said side wheels each can pivot through an arc lying on one side only of the straight-ahead vehicle motion position.
- 3. The vehicle of claim 2 wherein the range of pivotal motion is equal to or less than the range defined by (i) the side wheel position required for caster wheel tracking when the vehicle is steered straight ahead to (ii) the side wheel position required for caster wheel tracking when the vehicle is steered full-lock in a turn to the side of the vehicle to which the respective caster side wheel is mounted.
- 4. The vehicle of claim 3 wherein said range is defined by first, second, and third mechanical stops, the second and third stops being mounted for pivoting with respect to said first stop, the arc of pivoting being asymmetric about said first stop.
- 5. An apparatus comprising:
- a single track vehicle having a rear wheel, a steerable front wheel, and a retractable side wheel control system having first and second side wheels;
- means for pivotally mounting each said side wheel to pivot within a selected range, the position of each said side wheel within said range being independent of the position of said steerable front wheel;
- means actuatable by a driver located within said single track vehicle for locking said side wheels in a selected position within said range, said selected position being independent of the position of said steerable front wheel; and
- means for influencing the pivot position of each side wheel as a function of the lean angle of said vehicle.
- 6. The vehicle of claim 5 wherein said means for influencing includes first and second springs associated with each said side wheel.
- 7. A single-track vehicle comprising:
- a retractable side wheel control system having first and second side wheels;
- means for pivotally mounting each said side wheel to pivot within a selected range;
- means for influencing the pivot position of each said side wheel as a function of the lean angle of said vehicle; and
- means for locking said side wheels in a selected position.
- 8. An apparatus comprising:
- a single-track vehicle having a rear wheel, a steerable front wheel and being driveable in reverse;
- said single track vehicle further having a retractable side wheel control system having first and second caster side wheels; and
- means actuatable by a driver located within said single track vehicle for locking said side wheels in a selected position when the vehicle is to be driven in reverse, said selected position being independent of the position of said steerable front wheel.
- 9. A single-track vehicle comprising:
- a retractable side wheel control system having first and second side wheels;
- means for pivotally mounting each said side wheel to pivot within a selected range; and
- means for influencing the pivot position of each side wheel as a function of the lean angle of said vehicle.
- 10. The vehicle of claim 9 wherein said means for influencing includes first and second springs associated with each said side wheel.
- 11. The vehicle of claim 10 wherein each of said first and second springs is connected to a cable attached to a frame portion of the single-track vehicle.
- 12. A single-track vehicle comprising:
- a retractable side wheel control system having first and second side wheels;
- means for pivotally mounting each said side wheel to pivot within a selected range; and
- means for influencing the pivot position of each side wheel as a function of the degree of retraction of said side wheels.
- 13. The vehicle of claim 12 wherein said means for influencing includes first and second springs associated with each said side wheel.
- 14. The vehicle of claim 13 wherein each of said first and second springs is connected to a cable attached to a frame portion of the single-track vehicle.
