Claims
- 1. A device for aspirating secretions from a medical patient's lungs comprising:
- a suction catheter tube having a distal end;
- a fitting means for defining a shell with a hollow interior that is continuously open to atmosphere, and that is sized and shaped to receive a patiens's expired air even when coughing, said fitting means comprising means for gripping and sealing the distal end of said catheter tube such that the distal end of the catheter tube is sealed from the hollow interior of said shell until the distal end of the catheter is forcibly and slidably pushed through the gripping and sealing means for placement through the firing means into a patient's lungs.
- 2. A device according to claim 1 wherein said gripping and sealing means comprises plurality of radially disposed gripping elements each formed of a resilient material having memory and collectively defining an aperture through which the catheter tube is forcibly advanced so as to thereby enlarge the effective size of the aperture counter to the memory of said elements, the gripping elements each comprising a longitudinally deflectable flap which engages, while being generally longitudinally deflected by, the advanced catheter tube, thereby restraining the catheter tube due to gripping action caused by each said flap, so as to prevent inadvertent movement of the catheter tube once in place.
- 3. A device according to claim 2 further comprising a collapsible envelope surrounding the catheter tube, the envelope being connected at one end thereof to the fitting, the flaps substantially preventing contaminants from entering the envelope but allowing evacuation of air in the envelope during advancement of the catheter tube.
- 4. A fitting adapted for releasible disposition at a proximal end of a tracheal tube in conjunction with an aspirating device having an aspirating catheter tube, the fitting comprising an oversized receptacle adapted for releasible attachment to a proximal fitting of a tracheal tube, the receptacle comprising an interior chamber disposed within a shield which interior chamber is in two-way communication with atmosphere at all times, and said interior chamber comprising an apertured seal site sized, shaped and located to permit snug passage therethrough of an aspirating catheter tube so that atmosphere within the interior chamber is prevented from crossing the apertured seal site until passage therethrough of said catheter tube, the shield being sized and shaped to provide a cough-confining housing.
- 5. A single use aspirating catheter assembly comprising:
- a hollow aspirating catheter tube comprising a hollow interior and a proximal end;
- a flexible envelope enclosing the catheter robe;
- a fitting means for defining a shell with a hollow interior that is continuously open atmosphere, and that is sized and shaped to receive a patient's expired air even when coughing, said fitting means comprising means for gripping and sealing the distal end of said catheter tube such that the distal end of the catheter tube is sealed from the hollow interior of said shell until the distal end of the catheter is forcibly and slidably pushed through the gripping and sealing means for placement through the fitting means into a patient's lungs; and
- normally closed valve means for selectively communicating aspirating vacuum pressure to the interior of the catheter tube for evacuation of lung secretions, the valve means comprising a valve element and valve support body in which at least part of the valve element is disposed and may be manually displaced, the valve element comprising a normally closed bore which when caused to be aligned with the hollow interior of said catheter tube during said manual displacement places said vacuum pressure in communication with the hollow interior of the catheter tube, the valve element comprising a sealing portion joining the valve element to the valve support body to prevent entry of atmospheric air, a self-biasing portion urging the valve element to a normally closed position with respect to the bore, a portion sealing the valve element to the valve support body against flow beyond the bore caused by vacuum pressure, and a manually displaceable potion comprising a flow-control part by which the bore is caused to be opened for communication of vacuum pressure across the valve when the manually displaceable portion is displaced counter to the self-bias.
