Claims
- 1. A prosthesis for implantation in a body having an outer surface at least a portion of which has a sintered coating comprising metallic particles having a size distribution which is at least bimodal such that the size distribution includes at least two discernible peak, one of which corresponds to smaller particles and the other of which to larger particles, wherein the coating comprises less than two complete layers of particles and wherein (i) the smaller particles form a matrix in which the larger particles are distributed, (ii) the larger particles are spaced apart from one another and project above the matrix, and (iii) there are sintered junctions between the larger particles and the smaller particles.
- 2. The prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the portion of the outer surface which has the sintered coating is stepped.
- 3. The prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the coating comprises substantially a single layer of particles.
- 4. A prosthesis for implantation in a body having an outer surface at least a portion of which has a sintered coating comprising at least two sets of metallic particles one of the sets having a larger mean diameter and the other of the sets having a smaller mean diameter, said larger and smaller mean diameters having a predetermined ratio, wherein the coating comprises less than two complete layers or particles and wherein (i) the particles having the smaller mean diameter form a matrix in which the particles having the larger mean diameter are distributed, (ii) the particles having the larger mean diameter are spaced apart from one another and project above the matrix, (iii) there are sintered junctions between particles having the larger mean diameter and particles having the smaller mean diameter, and (iv) the at least two sets of metallic particles have a size distribution which is at least bimodal such that the size distribution includes at least two discernible peaks.
- 5. The prosthesis of claim 4 wherein the predetermined ratio is between about 2:1 and about 7:1.
- 6. The prosthesis of claim 5 wherein the predetermined ratio is about 2.5:1.0.
- 7. The prosthesis of claim 6 wherein the mean diameter for the particles having the larger mean diameter is about 630 microns and the mean diameter for the particles having the smaller mean diameter is about 250 microns.
- 8. The prosthesis of claim 4 wherein the ratio of the number of particles having the smaller mean diameter to the number of particles having the larger mean diameter is between about 4:1 and about 40:1.
- 9. The prosthesis of claim 8 wherein the ratio is about 16:1.
- 10. The prosthesis of claim 4 wherein the coating is formed by mixing together equal volumes of the particles having the smaller mean diameter and the particles having the larger mean diameter.
- 11. A prosthesis for implantation in a body having an outer surface at least a portion of which has a sintered coating, said coating having a maximum thickness and comprising at least two sets of metallic particles, one of the sets having a larger mean diameter and the other of the sets having a smaller mean diameter, wherein the particles having the smaller mean diameter exist on the outer surface in substantially a single layer and the particles having the larger mean diameter define the maximum thickness of the coating and wherein the at least two sets of metallic particles have a size distribution which is at least bimodal such that the size distribution includes at least two discernible peaks.
- 12. The prosthesis of claim 11 wherein the coating is formed by mixing together equal volumes of the particles having the smaller mean diameter and the particles having the larger mean diameter.
- 13. A prosthesis for implantation in a body having an outer surface at least a portion of which has a sintered coating, said coating having a maximum thickness and comprising metallic particles having a size distribution which is at least bimodal such that the size distribution includes at least two discernible peaks, one of which corresponds to smaller particles and the other of which to larger particles, wherein the smaller particles exist on the outer surface in substantially a single layer and the larger particles define the maximum thickness of the coating.
