Description
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2021-0063642, filed on May 17, 2021, in the Korean Intellectual Property Office, which application is hereby incorporated herein by reference.

TECHNICAL FIELD

The present disclosure relates to a skateboard platform for an electric vehicle.

BACKGROUND

In recent years, as the perception of environmental crisis and depletion of oil resources has increased, research and development of eco-friendly electric vehicles have actively been conducted. Electric vehicles include plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), etc.

An electric vehicle includes a battery assembly mounted on a vehicle body. The battery assembly (also referred to as the “battery pack”) includes a battery case in which a plurality of battery modules, cooling channels, and other electric/electronic components are assembled. Each battery module includes a plurality of battery cells.

In order to develop a purpose built vehicle (PBV) that satisfies various customers' needs (a flat floor, expansion of an interior space, etc.), electric vehicles in which one or more upper bodies having various structures or shapes share a common skateboard platform are being researched and developed. Such an upper body is also referred to as a “top hat”, and the upper body may be of various body styles, such as a crossover, a sedan, and a coupe.

A skateboard platform includes a skateboard frame and a battery assembly mounted on the skateboard frame. However, a conventional skateboard platform has a structure in which the battery assembly overlaps the skateboard frame, which increases weight and cost, and an unnecessary space is created between the skateboard frame and the battery assembly in terms of layout. As a result, the manufacturing cost and weight of the electric vehicle relatively increase.

The upper flange 51b may be aligned with the top surface of the center side member 31, and the upper flange 51b may overlap the top surface of the center side member 31. The upper flange 51b and the top surface of the center side member 31 may be joined through an upper bolt 55a. The lower flange 52b may be aligned with a bottom surface of the center side member 31, and the lower flange 52b may overlap the bottom surface of the center side member 31. The lower flange 52b and the bottom surface of the center side member 31 may be joined through a lower bolt 56a. The upper flange 51b and the lower flange 52b may be spaced apart from each other by a gap corresponding to a thickness of the center side member 31, and the center side member 31 may serve as a side wall between the side edge of the upper panel 51 and the side edge of the lower panel 52. An upper sealing member 55b may be interposed between the upper flange 51b and the top surface of the center side member 31, and a lower sealing member 56b may be interposed between the lower flange 52b and the bottom surface of the center side member 31 so that the side of the upper panel 51 and the side of the lower panel 52 may be joined to the center side member 31 in a sealed manner.

As described above, the battery assembly 12 may be connected to the pair of center side members 31 through the upper flanges 51b of the upper panel 51 and the lower flanges 52b of the lower panel 52 so that the pair of center side members 31 may serve as the pair of side walls located on left and right sides of the battery assembly 12. That is, the battery assembly 12 may be integrally connected to the center side members 31 of the center module 30.

A front portion of the upper panel 51 and a front portion of the lower panel 52 may be joined in a sealed manner, and a rear portion of the upper panel 51 and a rear portion of the lower panel 52 may be joined in a sealed manner. For example, the front wall of the upper panel 51 and the front edge of the lower panel 52 may be joined in a sealed manner, and the rear wall of the upper panel 51 and the rear edge of the lower panel 52 may be joined in a sealed manner. As the upper panel 51 and the lower panel 52 are joined to the corresponding center side members 31 through the sealing members 55b and 56b, the front portion of the upper panel 51 and the front portion of the lower panel 52 are joined in the sealed manner, and the rear portion of the upper panel 51 and the rear portion of the lower panel 52 are joined in the sealed manner, the battery assembly 12 may have the receiving space defined by the upper panel 51, the lower panel 52, and the pair of center side members 31, and accordingly the plurality of battery modules 53, the cooling channel 54, and the like may be received in the receiving space.

Referring to FIG. 4, a pair of upper body frame members 8 may be provided on bottom edges of each of the upper bodies 7 and 7a. FIG. 4 illustrates the left upper body frame member 8 located on the left bottom edge of each of the upper bodies 7 and 7a. Although not shown, the right upper body frame member 8 may be located on the right bottom edge of each of the upper bodies 7 and 7a. Specifically, each upper body frame member 8 may be a side sill extending along each bottom edge of the upper bodies 7 and 7a. Each of the upper bodies 7 and 7a may have a door opening 6 in which a door is mounted, and a sealing member 9 such as a weatherstrip may be mounted along edges of the door opening 6.

The skateboard frame 11 may be joined to the upper body frame member 8 through a plurality of fasteners 14 and 15, and a bottom surface of the upper body frame member 8 may be seated on or supported to a top surface of the skateboard frame 11. Referring to FIG. 4, each center side member 31 of the skateboard frame 11 may be joined to the corresponding upper body frame member 8 through the plurality of fasteners 14 and 15, and the bottom surface of the upper body frame member 8 may be seated on or supported to the top surface of the center side member 31.

According to an exemplary embodiment, the plurality of fasteners 14 and 15 may include a plurality of exterior-side bolts 14 relatively close to the exterior of the vehicle, and a plurality of interior-side bolts 15 relatively close to the interior of the vehicle when viewed from a transverse cross-section of the upper body frame member 8 and a transverse cross-section of the center side member 31. The plurality of exterior-side bolts 14 may be spaced apart from each other in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle, and the plurality of interior-side bolts 15 may be spaced apart from each other in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle. Each exterior-side bolt 14 may be spaced apart from and be aligned with the corresponding interior-side bolt 15 along a width axis of the vehicle. In particular, each exterior-side bolt 14 and the corresponding interior-side bolt 15 may be symmetrical to each other with respect to a vertical central axis of the upper body frame member 8 and the center side member 31. Thus, the upper body frame member 8 and the center side member 31 may be joined by a uniform joining force through the exterior-side bolts 14 and the corresponding interior-side bolts 15.

Referring to FIG. 5, the battery assembly 12 may be integrally connected to the center side member 31, and the plurality of exterior-side bolts 14 and the plurality of interior-side bolts 15 may be disengaged from the upper body frame member 8 and the center side member 31 so that the center side member 31 may be separated from the upper body frame member 8, and the battery assembly 12 together with the center side member 31 may be quickly and easily separated from the upper body frame member 8. In other words, the battery assembly 12 may be integrally connected to the center side members 31, and the battery assembly 12 and the center side members 31 may be quickly and easily separated from the upper body frame members 8 through the disengagement of the plurality of exterior-side bolts 14 and the plurality of interior-side bolts 15, and thus a swappable battery system may be implemented.

In recent electric vehicles, research and development on the swappable battery system are being carried out, and the swappable battery system is helping to reduce the manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) and taxes by installing a small-capacity battery at the time of vehicle sales, and then replacing it with a large-capacity battery according to customer's needs. In addition, the swappable battery system may reduce the manufacturing cost of the vehicle by removing a charging system such as quick charging equipment, and may allow a discharged battery assembly to be replaced with a charged battery assembly within a relatively short time (within one to two minutes) in an area where infrastructure for quick charging is insufficient.

Referring to FIG. 6, the front crossmember 23 may support the bottom of a front portion of the battery assembly 12. Each end portion of the front crossmember 23 may be joined to a bottom end of the corresponding front side member 21, and accordingly a bottom surface of the front crossmember 23 may be aligned with a bottom surface of the front side member 21. That is, the bottom surface of the front crossmember 23 may be flush with the bottom surface of the front side member 21. In particular, the front portion of the lower panel 52 of the battery assembly 12 may be seated on the front crossmember 23, and thus the front portion of the battery assembly 12 may be stably supported to the front crossmember 23.

Referring to FIG. 7, at least one rear crossmember 43 of the plurality of rear crossmembers, which is adjacent to the center module 30, may support the bottom of a rear portion of the battery assembly 12. Each end portion of the rear crossmember 43 may be joined to a bottom end of the corresponding rear side member 41, and accordingly a bottom surface of the rear crossmember 43 may be aligned with a bottom surface of the rear side member 41. That is, the bottom surface of the rear crossmember 43 may be flush with the bottom surface of the rear side member 41. The rear portion of the lower panel 52 of the battery assembly 12 may be seated on the rear crossmember 43, and thus the rear portion of the battery assembly 12 may be stably supported to the rear crossmember 43.

Referring to FIG. 8, the skateboard platform 10 for an electric vehicle according to an exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure may further include a center floor panel 57 disposed on the upper panel 51 of the battery assembly 12. As the center floor panel 57 overlaps and is stacked on the upper panel 51, the center floor panel 57 may increase the stiffness and strength of the vehicle body and/or the battery assembly 12. The center floor panel 57 may have a pair of side walls 57a facing the exterior of the vehicle, and a pair of flanges 57b extending from the pair of side walls 57a toward the exterior of the vehicle.

An upper flange 51d may extend horizontally from a bottom end of the side wall 51c toward the exterior of the vehicle. The upper flange 51d may be aligned with the bottom surface of the center side member 31, and the upper flange 51d together with the lower flange 52b of the lower panel 52 may overlap the bottom surface of the center side member 31. The upper flange 51d and the lower flange 52b may be joined to the bottom surface of the center side member 31 through a bolt 55c. A sealing member 55d may be interposed between the upper flange 51d and the lower flange 52b so that the upper flange 51d of the upper panel 51 and the lower flange 52b of the lower panel 52 may be joined in a sealed manner.

FIG. 10 illustrates a skateboard platform for an electric vehicle according to another exemplary embodiment of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 10, the center floor panel 57 may be disposed on the upper panel 51, and the center floor panel 57 may be integrally connected to the upper body frame member 8. That is, since the center floor panel 57 is connected to the upper body frame member 8 instead of being connected to the battery assembly 12, the upper panel 51 of the battery assembly 12 may only serve as an upper cover covering the top of the plurality of battery modules 53, and the center floor panel 57 may only serve as the floor of the vehicle body.

According to an exemplary embodiment, the center floor panel 57 and the upper body frame members 8 may form a unitary one-piece structure. The center floor panel 57 may have a pair of side walls 57c provided on both side edges thereof, and each side wall 57c may be inclined at a predetermined angle with respect to a vertical axis of the upper body frame member 8. A bottom end of the side wall 57c may be integrally connected to the upper body frame member 8.

According to another exemplary embodiment, the center floor panel 57 and the upper body frame member 8 may be provided as separate pieces, and each flange of the center floor panel 57 may be joined to the top surface of the upper body frame member 8 using fasteners, welding, and/or the like. The flange of the center floor panel 57 may extend from the bottom end of the side wall 57c toward the exterior of the vehicle. According to the exemplary embodiments illustrated in FIGS. 9 and 10, as the bolt 55c is disengaged from the center side member 31, the upper panel 51 and the lower panel 52 of the battery assembly 12 may be easily and quickly separated from the center side member 31. Since the battery assembly 12 is easily and quickly separated from the center side member 31 through the disengagement of the bolt 55c, a swappable battery system may be implemented.

As set forth above, the skateboard platform for an electric vehicle, according to exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure, may allow the battery assembly to be integrally connected to the center module of the skateboard frame, thereby increasing the overall stiffness of the vehicle body which is uniformly distributed through the battery assembly, and reducing the overall number of components which results in reduced weight and cost.

In addition, as the battery assembly is integrally connected to the center module of the skateboard frame, the standardization of skateboard platforms for common use may be easily achieved. The skateboard platform according to exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure may easily respond to design changes in vehicle specifications/dimensions (full width, wheelbase, etc.). For example, the size, structure, and shape of the skateboard frame and the battery assembly may be easily variable by the design changes in the vehicle specifications/dimensions (full width, wheelbase, etc.).

In particular, as the battery assembly is connected between the pair of center side members, which are the side structural members of the vehicle body, through the fasteners, the pair of center side members may serve as both side walls of the battery assembly so that the lateral stiffness and lateral strength of the battery assembly may be sufficiently secured by the pair of center side members. That is, the pair of center side members may support a lateral load of the vehicle body and a lateral load of the battery assembly together. Since a separate reinforcement for increasing the stiffness and strength of the battery assembly is not required, the structure of the battery assembly may be simplified, which is advantageous to protection of the battery modules. The battery assembly may be stably protected by the center side members, namely the structural members of the vehicle, and thus crashworthiness of the battery assembly may be improved, and the weight and cost of the battery assembly may be reduced.

The battery assembly may be easily and quickly separated from the center side members so that the swappable battery system may be easily implemented.

In addition, the battery assembly may be integrally connected to the skateboard frame through the center side members, and the skateboard frame may be quickly and easily separated from the upper body frame members, and thus the swappable battery system may be easily implemented, leading to the implementation of a BaaS (battery as a service) business model which allows swapping of battery packs of various capacities. By facilitating the implementation of the swappable battery system, the total cost of ownership of electric vehicles may be minimized in areas where quick charging equipment and charging infrastructure are not established.
