Claims
- 1. A drilling fluid comprising:
- (a) a continuous phase comprising an olefin mixture comprising olefins containing at least 12 carbon atoms, wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 20 weight percent alpha olefins and 15 to 90 weight percent methyl branched olefins;
- (b) a weight material; and
- (c) water.
- 2. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the olefin mixture contains between 20 and 70 weight percent branched olefins.
- 3. The drilling fluid of claim 2 wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 10 weight percent alpha olefins.
- 4. The drilling fluid of claim 3 wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 5 weight percent alpha olefins.
- 5. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the continuous phase comprises at least 30 percent by volume of the drilling fluid.
- 6. The drilling fluid of claim 5 wherein the continuous phase comprises 50 to 70 percent by volume of the drilling fluid.
- 7. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the olefin mixture exhibits a kinematic viscosity of between 1 and 3 cSt when measured at 100.degree. C.
- 8. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the olefin mixture exhibits a flash point of greater than 90.degree. C.
- 9. The drilling fluid of claim 8 wherein the olefin mixture exhibits a flash point of greater than 110.degree. C.
- 10. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the olefin mixture comprises olefins containing between 12 and 24 carbon atoms.
- 11. The drilling fluid of claim 1 wherein the branched olefins are methyl branched olefins.
- 12. A drilling fluid comprising:
- (a) continuous phase comprising an olefin mixture comprising branched internal olefins containing at least 12 carbon atoms, wherein the olefin mixture is prepared by skeletally isomerizing an olefin feed comprising one or more linear olefins,
- wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 20 weight percent alpha olefins,
- (b) weight material; and
- (c) water.
- 13. The drilling fluid of claim 12 wherein the olefin mixture exhibits a pour point of below about -5.degree. C.
- 14. The drilling fluid of claim 13 wherein the olefin mixture exhibits a pour point of below about -9.degree. C.
- 15. The drilling fluid of claim 12 wherein the olefin feed comprises linear olefins containing between 14 and 18 carbon atoms.
- 16. The drilling fluid of claim 15 wherein the olefin feed comprises at least 50 weight percent linear olefins.
- 17. The drilling fluid of claim 16 wherein the olefin feed comprises at least 90 weight percent linear olefins.
- 18. The drilling fluid of claim 17 wherein the olefin feed comprises alpha-olefins.
- 19. The drilling fluid of claim 12 wherein the olefin feed is skeletally isomerized in the presence of an intermediate pore size molecular sieve.
- 20. The drilling fluid of claim 19 wherein the molecular sieve is SSZ-32, ZSM-23, ZSM-22, ZSM 35, SAPO-11, SAPO-31, or SAPO-41.
- 21. The drilling fluid of claim 20 wherein the molecular sieve is SAPO-11, SAPO-31, or SAPO-41.
- 22. The drilling fluid of claim 19 wherein the olefin feed is skeletally isomerized under isomerization conditions which include a temperature between 100.degree. C. and 200.degree. C.
- 23. The drilling fluid of claim 19 wherein the molecular sieve further comprises a Group VIII metal.
- 24. The drilling fluid of claim 23 wherein the Group VIII metal is platinum or palladium.
- 25. The drilling fluid of claim 24 wherein the olefin feed is skeletally isomerized under isomerization conditions which include a temperature between 120.degree. C. and 275.degree. C.
- 26. The drilling fluid of claim 2 wherein there is at least 5 percent skeletal isomerization of the carbon backbone.
- 27. The drilling fluid of claim 26 wherein there is at least 10 percent skeletal isomerization of the carbon backbone.
- 28. The drilling fluid of claim 27 wherein there is at least 15 percent skeletal isomerization of the carbon backbone.
- 29. The drilling fluid of claim 28 wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 10 weight percent alpha olefins.
- 30. The drilling fluid of claim 29 wherein the olefin mixture contains less than 5 weight percent alpha olefins.
