The present disclosure generally relates to skewer system, and in particular, to a skewer system having a plurality of skewers which can be connected to a variety of holders.
Food display stands and serving utensils are well known in the art. While such display stands and serving utensils according to the prior art provide a number of advantages, they nevertheless have certain limitations. The present invention seeks to overcome certain of these limitations and other drawbacks of the prior art, and to provide new features not heretofore available. A full discussion of the features and advantages of the present invention is deferred to the following detailed description, which proceeds with reference to the accompanying drawings.
According to one embodiment, the disclosed subject technology relates to a skewer system for displaying food and for providing a serving utensil for the food items being displayed. In one embodiment, the skewer system comprises a stand, a hub and a plurality of skewers. In alternate embodiments, multiple hubs, stands and skewers may be included.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a skewer system comprising: a hub having a top surface and a bottom surface, a plurality of receivers in the hub, each receiver having an opening at the top surface of the hub, each receiver further having a cavity extending into the hub from the opening, and a slot extending from the opening in the top surface of the hub; and, a plurality of skewers for pivotally and removably engaging the plurality of receivers in the hub, respectively, each of the skewers having an elongated body having a first end and a second end, a piercing member at the first end of the elongated body, an engaging member at the second end of the elongated body, the engaging member being shaped to extend through the opening and fit into the cavity of the receiver in the hub, the engaging member further having a shoulder adapted to engage an interior surface of the cavity when the skewer is pivoted in the receiver, wherein the elongated body of the skewer extends through the slot in the opening when the skewer is pivoted in the receiver.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a skewer system comprising: a hub having a top surface and a bottom surface, a central bore extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, a plurality of receivers in the hub, the plurality of receivers radially spaced about the central bore, each receiver having an opening at the top surface of the hub, each receiver further having a cavity extending into the hub from the opening and a sloped inner wall at a radial extent of the cavity; and, a plurality of skewers for removably engaging the plurality receivers in the hub, respectively, each of the skewers having an elongated body having a first end and a second end, a piercing member at the first end of the elongated body, an enlarged member at the second end of the elongated body, the enlarged member being shaped to extend through the opening in the cavity of the receiver in the hub and to rest adjacent the sloped inner wall of the cavity so that the skewer rests at an angle to the central bore when in the receiver, the enlarged member further having a shoulder adapted to engage an interior surface of the cavity for removably securing the skewer in the receiver in a snap-fit manner.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a skewer system comprising: a hub having a top surface and a bottom surface, a central bore extending from the top surface to the bottom surface, a plurality of receivers in the hub, the plurality of receivers radially spaced about the central bore, each receiver having an opening at the top surface of the hub, each receiver further having a cavity extending into the hub from the opening and a sloped inner wall at a radial extent of the cavity, each receiver further having a slot extending from the opening in the top surface of the hub; and, a plurality of skewers for removably engaging the plurality receivers in the hub, respectively, each of the skewers having an elongated body having a first end and a second end, a piercing member at the first end of the elongated body, an enlarged member at the second end of the elongated body, the enlarged member being shaped to extend through the opening in the cavity of the receiver in the hub and to rest adjacent the sloped inner wall of the cavity so that the skewer rests at an angle to the central bore when in the receiver, the enlarged member further having a shoulder adapted to engage an interior surface of the cavity for removably securing the skewer in the receiver in a snap-fit manner, and wherein the elongated body of the skewer extends through the slot in the opening when the skewer is pivotally snapped into the receiver at an angular orientation.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a hub for a skewer system, wherein in one embodiment the hub has a central bore extending into the hub from the bottom surface of the hub. In an alternate embodiment, the hub has a central bore extending into the hub from the top surface of the hub. In a further embodiment, the hub has multiple central bores extending into the hub, such as from the top surface of the hub and the bottom surface of the hub. In one embodiment the top central bore is coaxial with the bottom central bore. In a further embodiment, the hub has a central bore that extends from the bottom surface of the hub to the top surface of the hub. In one embodiment, the central bore has an annular rib extending from an interior surface therein. In a further embodiment, the central bore has one of a rib and a groove on an inner surface thereof.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a plurality of receivers in the hub. In one embodiment the plurality of receivers are radially spaced about the central bore of the hub. In a further embodiment, each receiver has an opening at the top surface of the hub and further has a cavity extending into the hub from the opening. In a further embodiment, each receiver has a sloped inner wall at a radial extent of the cavity, the sloped inner wall being at an angle to a longitudinal axis of the hub. In a further embodiment, each receiver has a slot extending from the opening in the top surface of the hub.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a plurality of skewers for the skewer system. In one embodiment, the plurality of skewers both pivotally and removably engage the plurality of receivers in the hub, respectively. In a further embodiment, each of the skewers has an elongated body having a first end and a second end, a piercing member at the first end of the elongated body, and an engaging member at the second end of the elongated body. In one embodiment, the engaging member is shaped to extend through the opening and fit into the cavity of the receiver in the hub. In a further embodiment, the elongated body of the skewer extends through the slot in the opening when the skewer is pivotally snapped into the receiver at an angular orientation. In a further embodiment, the engaging member has a shoulder adapted to engage an interior surface of the cavity when the skewer is pivoted in the receiver. In one embodiment, the plurality of skewers, when seated in the receivers, respectively, extend from the hub at an angle of approximately 45°. In a further embodiment, each of the plurality of skewers engages a respective sloped inner wall of the receivers when inserted into one of the plurality of receivers.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a support member for a skewer system, wherein the support member has a first end to mate with the central bore of the hub to connect the support to the hub. In one embodiment, the support member has an annular groove at the first end, and the annular groove mates with the annular rib of the central bore of the hub to removably secure the support member to the hub. In a further embodiment, the first end of the support has the other of a rib and a groove on an exterior surface thereof to removably connect the support to the hub in a snap fit configuration.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a base member for a skewer system. In one embodiment, the base member has a receiver to engage a second end of the support member so that the base member can support the support member, the hub and the plurality of skewers. In a further embodiment, the base has a plurality of depressions for retaining food items.
The disclosed subject technology further relates to a skewer system comprising an auxiliary member connectable to the hub at the top surface thereof. In one embodiment, the auxiliary member has a mating member to mate with the central bore of the hub so that the auxiliary member can extend axially away from the hub.
It is understood that other embodiments and configurations of the subject technology will become readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the following detailed description, wherein various configurations of the subject technology are shown and described by way of illustration. As will be realized, the subject technology is capable of other and different configurations and its several details are capable of modification in various other respects, all without departing from the scope of the subject technology. In one embodiment, the skewer system 10 is provided as a system for supporting food items, such as olives, mushrooms, shrimp, cheese, chicken wings, meat, and a variety of other vegetables and food items that would typically be placed either inside a drink glass or on separate independent skewers in a drink glass.
As explained above, in alternate embodiments the base 20 may alternately have a plurality of compartments 90 or depressions 90 for condiments. Additionally, the base 20 may be shaped square, rectangular or any other shape to provide adequate support for the skewer system 10.
In one method of use, the skewer system 10 may be prefilled with food items so that a bartender merely needs to place the hub 14 on a support member 18 and base 20. Alternately, the prefilled skewer hubs may be placed on supports 18 for use as an individual appetizer, such as shown in
