Claims
- 1. A ski binding part for use in holding a ski boot onto a ski, comprising:
- a frame supported on said ski;
- a sole holder adapted to engage the upper surface of the sole of said ski boot and having an opening therethrough;
- a threaded bolt rotationally supported on said frame, extending through said opening in said sole holder and having a diameter less than the smallest cross-sectional dimension of said opening;
- a coupling part having an internally threaded opening therein threadedly engaging said bolt, disposed within said opening in said sole holder, and having a first friction surface thereon; and
- coupling means provided on said sole holder including a second friction surface cooperable with said first friction surface on said coupling part for preventing relative axial movement between and for rotationally frictionally slip coupling said coupling part and said sole holder;
- whereby said sole holder and coupling part move axially along said bolt in response to rotation of said bolt until said sole holder engages said upper surface of said ski boot sole, whereupon continued axial movement of said sole holder and said coupling part in response to continued rotation of said bolt will be resisted by said ski boot sole and said coupling part will rotate relative to said sole holder to thereby control the force exerted by said sole holder on said upper surface of said ski boot sole.
- 2. The ski binding part of claim 1, wherein:
- said coupling part has two said first friction surfaces which are annular, concentrically encircle said bolt, and respectively face in opposite axial directions; and
- said coupling means has two said second friction surfaces which are annular, concentrically encircle said bolt, and respectively face in opposite axial direction, each said second friction surface being engaged with a respective said first friction surface.
- 3. The ski binding part of claim 2, wherein said coupling means includes:
- an annular shoulder provided in the surface of said sole holder opening on one side of said coupling part, one said second friction surface being provided on said annular shoulder; and
- a sleeve element snugly disposed in said sole holder opening on the side of said coupling part opposite said annular shoulder, said bolt extending through and being freely rotatable in the opening through said sleeve element and the other said second friction surface being provided on said sleeve element.
- 4. The ski binding part of claim 2, wherein said coupling means includes:
- a pair of annular inserts coaxially encircling said bolt and disposed on opposite sides of said coupling part, each said second friction surface being provided on a respective one of said inserts;
- resilient means cooperable with said inserts for urging said inserts axially toward each other, whereby each said first friction surface is firmly urged against a respective said second friction surface; and
- adjustment means cooperable with said resilient means for adjusting the force exerted on said inserts by said resilient means.
- 5. The ski binding part of claim 4, wherein said coupling part has a peripheral annular first recess on each side thereof, each said first friction surface being located in and each said insert being at least partly disposed in a respective said first recess.
- 6. The ski binding part of claim 5, wherein:
- said opening in said sole holder is of circular cross section and has an inside diameter slightly greater than the outside diameter of said coupling part; and
- said sole holder includes an annular second recess adjacent and concentric with respect to each said first annular recess in said coupling part, a portion of each said insert being disposed in a respective said second annular recess.
- 7. The ski binding part of claim 4, wherein said adjustment means includes:
- a plurality of adjusting screws extending substantially parallel to said bolt and rotatably supported in and fixed against axial movement with respect to said sole holder at angularly spaced locations around said bolt, each said screw having first and second threaded portions on opposite sides of said sole holder, said first threaded portion having right-hand threads and said second threaded portion having left-hand threads;
- a pair of annular disks concentrically encircling said bolt and located on opposite sides of and axially spaced from said coupling part and said annular inserts, each said disk having a plurality of angularly spaced first openings and angularly spaced second openings therein, said first openings each being threadedly engaged with a respective said adjusting screw, whereby said disks move simultaneously toward or away from each other in response to rotation of said adjusting screws; and
- a plurality of pins fixedly mounted in each said annular insert at angularly spaced locations and extending away from said coupling part parallel to said bolt, each said pin being slidably received in a respective said second opening in a respective said annular disk; and
- wherein said resilient means includes a plurality of helical compression springs, each said helical spring encircling a respective said pin and having one end disposed against the associated annular insert and the other end disposed against the associated annular disk.
- 8. The ski binding part of claim 7, including a plurality of cylindrical recesses in each said annular insert, each said cylindrical recess being coaxial with and of greater diameter than a respective said pin, said one end of the associated helical spring being disposed within said recess.
