Claims
- 1. An apparatus for controlling slag in a tap discharge of molten metal and slag from a tap hole of a tilting furnace which is variably tiltable between an upright, non-tilted position and a fully-tilted position, said apparatus comprising:
- a trough extending outwardly from said tap hole, said trough having a slag separating device at its distal end and defining a flow channel for directing said molten metal and slag to said device, said device defining an inlet for receiving said molten metal and slag and having an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged, said device further defining a reservoir communicating with said trough flow channel at said device inlet and defining a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said device defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and further defining a passage laterally offset from said reservoir for communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet, said passage defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a distance below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet.
- 2. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 in which
- said slag opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir; and
- said bottom opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 3. An apparatus in accordance with claim 1 in which said slag opening is defined in a side wall for discharging said slag laterally of said device.
- 4. An apparatus for controlling slag in a tap discharge of molten metal and slag from a tap hole or a tilting furnace which is variably tiltable between an upright, non-tilted position and a fully-tilted position, said apparatus comprising:
- a trough extending outwardly from said tap hole, said trough having a slag separating device at its distal end and defining a flow channel for directing said molten metal and slag to said device, said device defining an inlet for receiving said molten metal and slag and having an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged, said device further defining a reservoir communicating with said trough flow channel at said device inlet and defining a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said device defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and further defining a passage for communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet, said passage defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a distance below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet, said slag opening being located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 5. An apparatus in accordance with claim 4 in which said reservoir is laterally offset from said passage.
- 6. An apparatus in accordance with claim 4 in which said slag opening is defined in a side wall for discharging said slag laterally of said device.
- 7. An apparatus in accordance with claim 4 in which said passage has a first portion extending rearwardly of said bottom opening, said bottom opening being located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 8. An apparatus for controlling slag in a tap discharge of molten metal and slag from a tap hole of a tilting furnace which is variably tiltable between an upright, non-tilted position and a fully-tilted position and which has a trough extending outwardly from said tap hole to define a flow channel for said molten metal and slag, said apparatus comprising:
- a device mounted on said trough, said device defining an inlet for receiving said molten metal and slag from said trough flow channel and having an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged, said device defining a reservoir communicating with said trough flow channel at said device inlet and defining a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said device further defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and defining a passage communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet and for defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a level below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet.
- 9. An apparatus in accordance with claim 8 in which said passage is laterally offset from, and adjacent to, said reservoir.
- 10. An apparatus in accordance with claim 8 in which said slag opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 11. An apparatus in accordance with claim 8 in which said passage has a first portion extending rearwardly of said bottom opening and said bottom opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 12. An apparatus for separating molten metal from slag, said apparatus comprising:
- a tiltable vessel for holding molten metal and slag, said vessel having an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged when said vessel is tilted, said vessel defining a reservoir and a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said vessel defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and further defining a passage laterally offset from said reservoir for communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet, said passage defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a distance below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet.
- 13. An apparatus in accordance with claim 12 in which
- said slag opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir; and
- said bottom opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 14. An apparatus in accordance with claim 12 in which said slag opening is defined in a side wall of said vessel for discharging said slag laterally of said vessel.
- 15. An apparatus for separating molten metal from slag, said apparatus comprising:
- a tiltable vessel for holding molten metal and slag, said vessel defining an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged when said vessel is tilted, said vessel defining a reservoir and a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said vessel defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and further defining a passage for communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet, said passage defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a distance below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet, said slag opening being located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 16. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 in which said reservoir is laterally offset from said passage.
- 17. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 in which said slag opening is defined in a side wall of said vessel for discharging said slag laterally of said vessel.
- 18. An apparatus in accordance with claim 15 in which said passage has a first portion extending rearwardly of said bottom opening, said bottom opening being located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 19. An apparatus for separating molten metal from slag, said apparatus comprising:
- a tiltable vessel for holding molten metal and slag, said vessel having an outlet from which said molten metal can be discharged when said vessel is tilted, said vessel defining a reservoir and a slag opening from which said slag can be discharged, said vessel further defining a bottom opening to said reservoir below the level of said slag opening and defining a passage communicating between said bottom opening and said outlet and for defining a weir which extends generally upwardly above the level of said bottom opening to a level below the level of the bottom of said slag opening and over which said molten metal flows to said outlet.
- 20. An apparatus in accordance with claim 19 in which said passage is laterally offset from, and adjacent to, said reservoir.
- 21. An apparatus in accordance with claim 19 in which said slag opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 22. An apparatus in accordance with claim 19 in which said passage has a first portion extending rearwardly of said bottom opening, and said bottom opening is located at least as far outwardly as is said weir.
- 23. An apparatus for controlling the amount of slag in a tap discharge of molten metal and slag from a tap hole of a tilting furnace, said apparatus comprising:
- a discharge trough mounted to, and extending outwardly from, said furnace below said tap hole for tilting with said furnace, said trough defining an open discharge end and a lateral opening inwardly of said open discharge end, said discharge trough permitting said molten metal to flow under the influence of gravity out of said open discharge end; and
- a dam within said discharge trough for damming said molten metal and slag and retaining said slag in said discharge trough while permitting said molten metal to flow out of said trough at said discharge end and permitting said retained slag to discharge through said lateral opening in said trough.
- 24. An apparatus in accordance with claim 23 including a weir within said discharge trough for establishing, for a selected angle of tilt, a minimum depth of flow of said molten metal in a portion of said trough.
- 25. An apparatus in accordance with claim 23 wherein said dam is located between said lateral opening and said discharge end.
- 26. An apparatus in accordance with claim 24 wherein said weir is located between said discharge end and said dam.
- 27. A device for separating molten metal from slag comprising:
- a vessel for receiving molten metal and slag, said vessel having upstanding walls for containing molten metal and slag, said vessel defining a lateral opening for permitting discharge of slag therethrough, said vessel defining a discharge opening for permitting discharge of molten metal therethrough, said vessel being tiltable between a relatively level position wherein said molten metal and slag are retained in said vessel and a tilted position wherein said molten metal flows from said vessel through said discharge opening;
- a dam portion within said vessel, said dam portion cooperating with said vessel walls to define a reservoir for receiving and retaining said molten metal and slag, said dam portion defining a dam opening at its bottom for permitting molten metal to flow therethrough; and
- a weir portion within said vessel, said weir portion being located downstream of said dam portion and upstream of said discharge opening for maintaining a minimum depth of molten metal in said reservoir when said vessel is tilted.
- 28. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 wherein said dam portion is defined in part by a longitudinally extending intermediate wall within said vessel.
- 29. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 28 wherein said dam opening is defined in part by said intermediate wall.
- 30. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 including a passage within said vessel wherein said molten metal flows through said passage from said dam opening to said weir portion, said passage having a portion extending upwardly adjacent said weir portion.
- 31. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 30 wherein a portion of said passage extends rearwardly from said dam opening.
- 32. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 30 wherein at least a portion of said passage is laterally offset from said reservoir.
- 33. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 wherein said dam portion is located forwardly of said weir portion.
- 34. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 wherein said weir portion is located rearwardly of said dam opening.
- 35. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 wherein said lateral opening is located rearwardly of said dam portion.
- 36. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 wherein said lateral opening is located forwardly of said weir portion.
- 37. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 27 including a tilt control mechanism extending from the bottom of said vessel for controlling the tilt of said vessel.
- 38. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 37 wherein said tilt control mechanism includes an adjustable leg extending from the bottom of said vessel, said leg being adjustable between an extended position and a retracted position.
- 39. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 37 wherein said tilt control mechanism includes a first adjustable leg extending downwardly from the forward end of said vessel and a second adjustable leg extending downwardly from the rear end of said vessel, each of said legs being hingeably connected to said vessel and being adjustable between an extended position and a retracted position.
- 40. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 39 wherein each of said adjustable legs includes a hydraulic cylinder.
- 41. A device for separating molten metal from slag in accordance with claim 40 wherein said vessel is movable between a lowered position and a raised position.
- 42. An apparatus for separating molten metal and slag, said apparatus comprising:
- a tiltable vessel for holding said molten metal and slag, said vessel having an open discharge end and a lateral opening inwardly of said open discharge end, said vessel being tiltable so as to permit said molten metal to flow under the influence of gravity out of said open discharge end; and
- a dam portion within said vessel for damming said molten metal and slag and retaining said slag in said tiltable vessel while permitting said molten metal to flow out of said vessel at said discharge end and permitting said retained slag to discharge through said lateral opening in said vessel.
- 43. An apparatus in accordance with claim 42 including a weir within said tiltable vessel for establishing, for a selected angle of tilt, a minimum depth of flow of said molten metal in a portion of said vessel.
- 44. An apparatus in accordance with claim 42 wherein said dam portion is located between said lateral opening and said discharge end.
- 45. The apparatus in accordance with claim 43 wherein said weir is located between said discharge end and said dam portion.
