Claims
- 1. An apparatus for forming a gap in a slide fastener chain having a pair of coplanar support tapes and rows of spaced molded interlocking coupling elements secured to inner edge portions of the tapes wherein leg portions of the coupling elements protrude above and below the inner edge portions of the tapes, comprising
- a pair of spaced-apart parallel shafts,
- means for rotating the shafts in opposite directions,
- first and second pairs of cutting disks mounted on the respective shafts where each pair of cutting disks includes an upper cutting disk coplanar with the upper cutting disk of the other pair and a lower cutting disk coplanar with the lower cutting disk of the other pair,
- said upper and lower cutting disks of each pair of cutting disks being spaced apart for receiving the tapes of the slide fastener therebetween, and
- said first and second pairs of cutting disks having respective first peripheral portions which when rotated to face each other are spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than a width of the interlocking coupling elements, and having respective second peripheral portions including cutting means projecting radially generally coplanar with respective opposite surfaces of the inner edge portions of the tapes for severing leg portions of the coupling elements from the slide fastener tapes.
- 2. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cutting disks each include teeth projecting radially therefrom for engaging into spaces between coupling elements for aligning and moving the coupling elements between the disks during severance of the leg portions.
- 3. An apparatus as claimed in claim 2 wherein the teeth of the first and second disks are first teeth extending a first radial distance from the axis of rotation of the disks for engaging head portions of opposite coupling elements, the cutting means includes cutting sections positioned between the first teeth for severing the leg portions, and the apparatus includes leading teeth on the first pair of cutting discs extending a second radial distance which is less than the first radial distance for initially engaging and positioning the legs of the slide fastener elements.
- 4. An apparatus for forming a gap in a slide fastener chain wherein the chain includes a pair of rows of molded interlocking coupling elements secured to inner edges of support tapes, each coupling element having a pair of legs with inner surfaces of each pair of legs diverging apart from heels of the legs toward a head of each coupling element, each leg being molded on a pair of spaced connecting threads which are tangential to the inner surface of each leg wherein a first connecting thread of each pair of connecting threads is adjacent the respective heel and the second of each pair of connecting threads is spaced from the first connecting thread toward the corresponding head, the apparatus comprising
- two pairs of upper and lower cutting means movable in respective upper and lower severing planes which are parallel to the tapes and which intersect the second connecting threads on opposite sides of the tapes,
- means for moving the cutting means in the respective severing planes to engage the cutting means with heels of the tapes and to sever outer portions of the legs form remanents of the legs left attached to the first connecting threads,
- said cutting means including wedge-like cutters having outer surfaces inclined outwardly from the severing planes for wedging the outer portions of the legs outwardly and for separating the severed outer leg portions from the second connecting threads,
- means for holding the connecting threads between the severing planes at points on opposite sides of each of the outer severed portions from the second connecting threads,
- said holding means including teeth for engaging into spaces between coupling elements, and
- said moving means including
- a pair of sapced-apart parallel shafts,
- means for rotating the shafts in opposite directions,
- first and second pairs of cutting disks mounted on the respective shafts wherein each pair of cutting disks includes an upper cutting disk in the upper severing plane and a lower cutting disk in the lower severing plane,
- said upper and lower cutting disks of each pair of cutting disks being spaced apart for receiving the tapes of the slide fastener therebetween, and
- said first and second pairs of cutting disks having respective first peripheral portions which when rotated to face each other are spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than a width of the interlocking coupling elements, and having respective second peripheral portions from which the teeth and the wedge-like cutters project radially, the wedge-like cutters being positioned between the teeth.
- 5. An apparatus as claimed in claim 1 or 4 including means for pulling a length of a slide fastener chain between the pairs of cutting wheels with the tapes between the upper and lower cutting disks to position a section of the slide fastener chain in position to be gapped.
- 6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5 including cam means mounted on one of the first and second shafts, and switch means operated by the cam means for controlling an operation of the pulling mechanism.
- 7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the pulling means includes means for driving the pulling means at slow and fast speeds, said pulling means operating at the slow speed in response to the switch means during the cutting of the leg portions of the fastening elements.
