Claims
- 1. This invention as a new and novel use of a modified power-driven telescoping antenna, deployed in a horizontal rather than a vertical position. It can be used as an aid in the positioning and parking of a RV, which has one, or more, slide out rooms. This invention provides a means of visually measuring a horizontal and vertical plane, to allow for a space, free of any obstructions, which would interfere with the subsequent extension of, said slide out room(s). It will help prevent damage to the slide out rooms. It will also ensure that the slide out rooms do not exceed any line, or boundary imposed by any public or private body. Such invention consisting of:
a. a machine operated device capable of extending and retracting a telescoping antenna, such as an automobile power antenna, said antenna to hereinafter be referred to as a telescoping rod, to measure a predetermined length in a hortizontal position parallel to the ground and b. such device, to be deployed as a pair, to be attached, one on each side of and adjacent to, the side and at the bottom edge of said slide out room(s) of said RV and c. positioned on said RV in such a manner as to be viewed by either the driver of a motor home, or RV towing vehicle, in the drivers rear view mirrors and d. when electrically activated, said pair of telescoping rods are extended horizontally from the side of said RV, providing a visual horizontal sight line between the outer tips of the two said rods and a vertical sight line between the outer tips of said rods to the upper and lower most part, of said slide out room(s), thus e. creating a visual frame of reference within which no stationary objects should exist, which would interfere, or cause damage, to said RV slide out room(s) when extended to their full and final position, or extend beyond or over any boundary, line or limit imposed by a private or public body, with f. said pair of telescoping rods activated by either a switch located on said RV, or preferably said switch mounted next to or within reach of the driver's seat, in either the motor home type RV or the towing vehicle of a RV, or by use of a remote control device, whereby g. the operator of said vehicles can observe the location of said pair of fully extended telescoped rods, by use of the said vehicle's rear view mirrors and properly visually measure, by sight, the space necessary for h. the operation and extension of the said slide out room(s), to prevent interruption thereof, or damage thereto, thus i. eliminating the need for the driver to make frequent trips outside of said motor home or said towing vehicle to view one or both sides of said RV for the purpose of assurance that the necessary space required is free and clear of any obstruction to allow for full extension of said slide out room(s), or j. the need for an assistant person to stand at the sides and to the rear of said RV, to give verbal or directional signals to the driver, while said driver is in the driver's seat, with k. a light recessed into the outside mounding bracket, which automatically illuminates said telescoping rods when activated in an extended position, to assist said driver in use of this invention at night.
- 2. Further, the power-driven telescoping rod device, described in claim 1 above, is to be deployed as a pair, with one such device installed on each side of said RV's slide out rooms, adjacent to or near the side and bottom edges of said slide out room(s). Each said device should be installed inside said RV in either a storage compartment under the inside floor, with an outside access door, if such compartment is near the preferred location as described above, or between the said vehicle's outside wall and said vehicle's main longitudinal steel frame. To provide stability during travel and operation, said devices should be attached to said vehicle by
a. use of a metal support strap, having a plurality of holes therein, where one end of said strap is attached by use of a standard machine screw and lock washer of proper size, to a threaded insert in the rear of said power unit. The other end of said metal support strap is attached to the RV by means of a screw to any available support member, brace or other surface inside of said RV and b. support for the front, or outer most point of the hollow tube housing containing the said retracted telescoping rod, can be achieved by use of a mounting bracket assembly, a part of which is attached to both the inside and outside wall of said RV.
- 3. It is further claimed that a pair, or pairs, of said power-driven telescoping units, described in claim 1 above, and the installation and application thereof, can also be used to provide a visual positioning and parking device for assistance to the operator of a RV without slide out room(s). This would provide for the simple and single purpose of measuring the distance from the outside surface of said vehicle to any other vehicle or stationary object or in relationship to any parking line, boundary or limit imposed by either, or both a private or public person or body.
- 4. It is further claimed that a pair, or pairs, of said power-driven telescoping units described in claim 1 above, and the installation and application thereof, can also provide visual positioning and parking assistance to operators of other type vehicles. Most notably, but not limited to, the trucking, marine and aviation industries, where an electrically operated measuring device would be useful and desirable to judge the distance from the side of their unit to another unit, object, obstruction, boundary or limit line imposed by either a public or private body.
