Claims
- 1. A head for a data storage device comprising
a slider including a leading edge, a trailing edge, a raised bearing surface, a recessed bearing surface and a boundary portion along a boundary of the raised bearing surface with the recessed bearing surface; a transducer element carried on the slider; and at least one trench on the slider, the at least one trench including a boundary portion having a boundary width dimension and an intermediate portion having an intermediate width dimension where the width dimension of the intermediate portion is larger than the boundary width dimension.
- 2. The head of claim 1 wherein the at least one trench is formed on the raised bearing surface and the boundary width dimension extends along a longitudinal length of the slider between the leading edge and the trailing edge of the slider.
- 3. The head of claim 1 wherein the at least one trench includes opposed spaced boundary portions and the intermediate portion extends between the opposed spaced boundary portions.
- 4. The head of claim 1 wherein the at least one trench is along a trailing edge portion of the slider.
- 5. The head of claim 1 wherein the boundary width dimension is approximately 5 microns or less.
- 6. The head of claim 1 wherein the boundary width dimension is approximately 1 micron or less.
- 7. The head of claim 1 wherein the intermediate portion of the at least one trench includes a curved shape.
- 8. The head of claim 3 including a plurality intermediate portions between the opposed spaced boundary portions having larger intermediate width dimensions than the width dimensions of the boundary portions.
- 9. The head of claim 1 wherein the transducer element includes one of an inductive, magnetoresistive, tunneling magneto-resistive, or magneto-optical transducer carried at the trailing edge of the slider.
- 10. A head comprising:
a slider having a transducer element carried thereby; and means for controlling stiction for slider-disc interface.
- 11. The head of claim 10 wherein the means for controlling stiction for slider-disc interface includes a trench having a width dimension along a longitudinal length of the slider between a leading edge and a trailing edge of the slider of approximately 5 microns or less.
- 12. The head of claim 10 wherein the means for controlling stiction includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced trenches having a width dimension along a longitudinal length of the slider between a leading edge and a trailing edge of the slider of approximately 5 microns or less.
- 13. The head of claim 12 wherein the plurality of trenches are longitudinally spaced at least approximately a micron apart.
- 14. The head of claim 10 wherein the slider includes a leading edge, a trailing edge, a raised bearing surface, a recessed bearing surface and a boundary portion along a boundary of the raised bearing surface and the recessed bearing surface and the means for controlling stiction for slider disc interface comprises a trench having a boundary portion having a boundary width dimension and an intermediate portion having an intermediate width dimension larger than the boundary width dimension.
- 15. A head comprising:
a slider including a leading edge, a trailing edge and opposed sides; a transducer element carried by the slider; and a trench on the slider having a length extending between the opposed sides of the slider.
- 16. The head of claim 15 wherein the slider includes a raised bearing surface and a recessed bearing surface and the trench extends along the raised bearing surface and the recessed bearing surface between the opposed sides of the slider.
- 17. The head of claim 15 wherein the trench has a width dimension along a longitudinal length of the slider between the leading edge and the trailing edge of the slider of approximately 5 microns or less.
- 18. A head comprising:
a slider including a leading edge and a trailing edge; a transducer element carried on the slider; and at least one trench on the slider having a width dimension of approximately 5 microns or less.
- 19. The head of claim 18 wherein the at least one trench is along a raised bearing surface of the slider at a trailing edge portion of the slider.
- 20. The head of claim 18 wherein the slider includes a plurality of longitudinally spaced trenches longitudinally spaced along a raised bearing surface of the slider at a trailing edge portion of the slider.
- 21. The head of claim 18 wherein the head is assembled in a data storage device to read data from or write data to a disc.
- 22. The head of claim 18 wherein the at least one trench is formed on a raised bearing surface and the raised bearing surface includes a boundary portion along a boundary of the raised bearing surface and a recessed bearing surface and the boundary portion has a boundary width dimension of approximately 5 microns or less and an intermediate portion on the raised bearing surface having an intermediate width dimension larger than the boundary width dimension.
