Claims
- 1. A smoking article comprising a rod of combustible tobacco material wrapped in a wrapper;
- said rod having (i) first and further smoking portions disposed successively laterally spaced apart adjacent and between first and further fuse portions; and (ii) first and further fuse portions disposed successively adjacent and between the first and further smoking portions;
- the smoking portions being comprised of tobacco material and being sized to burn for the duration of a puff of a smoker;
- the fuse portions being comprised of non-tobacco material and being sized to burn for the duration between the puffs of a smoker; and
- each of the fuse portions being capable of re-igniting a smoking portion laterally spaced from the previous smoking portion when a smoker draws upon the article in a puff.
- 2. A smoking article according to claim 1, wherein the non-tobacco materials are selected from the group consisting of binders, inorganic fillers, chemical additives which decompose on heating to release oxygen, and compounds which release volatile substances.
- 3. A smoking article according to claim 1, wherein the fuse portions contains tobacco material.
- 4. A smoking article according to claim 3, wherein the tobacco-containing material is an extrudate produced by an extrusion process.
- 5. A smoking article according to claim 4, wherein said extrudate has a cell structure which allows the extrudate to be drawn upon by a smoker.
- 6. A smoking article according to claim 1, wherein the fuse portion extends lengthwise along said rod of combustible tobacco material, said fuse portion having tobacco-containing segments disposed in spaced relationship from one another.
- 7. A smoking article according to claim 1, wherein the material in the smoking portions is substantially all consumed during successive puffing by a smoker.
- 8. A smoking article according to claim 1 wherein the fuse portion extending lengthwise of the rod, runs axially through and interconnects the successive spaced apart smoking portions of the rod.
- 9. A smoking article according to claim 1 wherein a filter element is disposed at one end of the rod.
- 10. A smoking article according to claim 1 wherein the smoking portions surround segments of the fuse portions.
- 11. A smoking article comprising a rod of combustible material wrapped in a wrapper, which rod is provided with an inter-puff region capable of maintaining smoulder in the inter-puff period, and a puff region comprising tobacco-containing material, the inter-puff region being capable of re-igniting a further puff region laterally spaced from the first puff region, the inter-puff region comprising a fuse portion extending lengthwise along said rod of combustible material, and the puff region comprising segments of tobacco-containing material disposed about the fuse portion in spaced relationship from one another, the fuse portion being comprised of cut tobacco, tobacco-containing material, non-tobacco material or mixtures thereof.
