Claims
- 1. A method of implementing internal fault isolation in photonic integrated circuits, comprising:
diverting a portion of certain circuit input and output signals to integrated photodetectors; and analyzing the optical signal detected at each photodetector to isolate the fault.
- 2. The method of claim 1, where the photodetectors comprise semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs).
- 3. The method of claim 2, where the SOAs are the same type as is utilized in the photonic integrated circuit.
- 4. The method of claim 1, where the circuit input and output signals are diverted to photodetectors via multimode interferometers (MMIs).
- 5. The method of any of claims 1-4, where the portion of circuit input and output signals that is diverted to photodetectors is set by how the MMIs split the optical power input to them.
- 6. The method of claim 5, where the MMIs split their input power in the ratio 90:10, where the 10% output is input to the photodetectors.
- 7. The method of claim 3 where a given SOA is operated as either an amplifier or a photodetector in response to an external electrical biasing signal.
- 8. A method of implementing internal monitoring in photonic integrated circuits, comprising:
diverting a portion of certain circuit input and output signals to integrated photodetectors; and analyzing the optical signals detected at each photodetector according to a monitoring algorithm.
- 8. A method of optimizing optical circuits with inherent redundancy, comprising:
using one of a set of redundant paths for signal transmission; and using another of the set of redundant paths for internal monitoring.
- 9. A method of fault isolation for integrated optical circuits, comprising; using a circuit according to claim 8 to obtain signal power information; and isolating faulty devices or signal inputs based upon said information.
