Claims
- 1. A method of laying sod comprising:
- (a) employing a roll of sod having the grass side of said sod facing outwardly,
- (b) supporting said roll of sod above the ground,
- (c) carrying said roll of sod in a direction to unwind said roll of sod with the grass side of said sod facing upwardly,
- (d) and laying the unwound portion of said sod on the ground.
- 2. A method of laying sod comprising:
- (a) employing a roll of sod having the grass side of said sod facing outwardly,
- (b) supporting said roll of sod above the ground,
- (c) carrying said roll of sod forwardly, and
- (d) unwinding said roll of sod with the top of said roll unwinding in a rearward direction so that an operator located immediately behind said roll of sod will have an unobstructed view of the portion of the unwinding sod extending from said roll to said ground.
- 3. A method according to claim 2 and including the step of driving said roll of sod at a controlled rotational speed thus to reduce the likelihood of buckles and tears in the sod being laid.
- 4. A method according to claim 31 and including the steps of normally driving the surface of said roll of sod at a speed equal to the speed at which said roll of sod is carried forwardly, and making momentary adjustments in the speed at which the surface of said roll of sod is driven to relieve tension in said sod or to take up slack in said sod.
- 5. A method according to claim 2 and including the step of rolling said sod at a position located rearwardly of said roll and closely spaced from said roll.
- 6. A method according to claim 2 and including the step of severing sod in said roll.
- 7. A method according to claim 6 wherein said sod is severed at a location in said roll where said sod is travelling upwardly in said roll, and including the step of holding the flap of remaining sod in said roll from falling downwardly.
- 8. A method according to claim 6 wherein said sod is advanced toward a barrier and is severed at a first location in said roll such that when said roll is stopped adjacent said barrier, the length of sod extending from said first location to a second location where the sod first contacts the ground prior to severing is approximately equal to the distance between said second location and said barrier.
