Abstract

This sofa invention accomplishes the objective of flat small packing by means of having a cross supporting bar in the base be removable, so that the sofa arms can be placed inside of the sofa base during storage and shipping. The invention accomplishes the objective of easy assembly by having the disassembled crossbar be easily placed hack into its position using hardware included with the kit. A cross connector can then be installed easily across the cross bars with the included hardware. The sofa back can then be attached to the seat frame by two metal brackets that lock into a slot. The arms can be attached to the sides using the hardware and then their zipped up to hide the hardware connections. Supporting legs are screwed onto the bottom by hand and the sofa is complete.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention falls within the field of knock down sofa kits which fit within a relatively flat rectangular box so thin they may easily be stored in warehouses and transported. Inventive means of enclosing the kit in the smallest, flattest box are desirable because of the need for stable storage using the least amount of space. Further characterization of the relevant field would be that the invention falls in the field of sofa kits that can be readily assembled at home by the end user.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This particular invention accomplishes the objective of flat small packing by means of having one of the cross supporting bars be removable so that the sofa arms can be placed inside of the sofa base during storage and shipping inside of a box optimally made of cardboard. The invention accomplishes the objective of easy assembly by having the disassembled crossbar be easily placed back into its position using hardware included with the kit. A cross connector can then be installed easily across the cross bars with the included hardware. The sofa back can then be attached to the seat frame by two metal brackets that lock into place in slots on the sofa back. The arms can be attached to the sides using the hardware and then their coverings zipped up to hide the hardware connections. Supporting legs are screwed onto the bottom by hand and the sofa is complete.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

This particular invention accomplishes the objective of flat small packing by means of having one of the cross supporting bars be removable so that the sofa arms can be placed inside of the sofa base during storage and shipping. The invention accomplishes the objective of easy assembly by having the disassembled crossbar be easily placed back into its position using hardware included with the kit. A cross connector can then be installed easily across the cross bars with the included hardware. The sofa back can then be attached to the seat frame by two metal brackets that lock into place in slots on the sofa back. The arms can be attached to the sides using the hardware and then their coverings zipped up to hide the hardware connections. Supporting legs are screwed onto the bottom by hand and the sofa is complete.

Turning now to FIG. 1 the sofa (1) can be seen in a fully assembled state. In FIG. 2 the sofa back (2) can be seen having bore holes (3) and slots (4). Turning now to FIG. 3, the sofa base can be seen which also has bore holes (3) as well as flanges (6) that have flange openings (7). Turning now to FIG. 4, arms (8) are shown in their disassembled state. Turning now to FIG. 5, a crossbar (9) can be seen that in the preferred embodiment has crossbar openings (10) and a projection (11) which in turn has a projection opening (12). Turning now to FIG. 6, a cross connector (13) can be seen which has connector openings (14). FIG. 7 shows a support leg (15), having support threads (16). FIG. 8 shows a foot (17) having foot threads (18). FIG. 9 shows a variety to connectors that may come with the kit. This list is not meant to be exclusive of other forms of connectors that may be included with the kit but seen in FIG. 9 are a nut (19), a lock washer (20), a washer (21), a bolt (22), and a threaded rod (23). Turning now to FIG. 10, the manner is shown by which the arms (8) fit inside the base (5) while the product is being shipped. Note that the arms (8) also have bore holes (3). After removal of the arms the crossbar (9) can be assembled into the base (5) as shown by FIG. 11. Connectors such as perhaps those seen in FIG. 9 are used to connect the cross bar to the base using the cross bar openings (10). Other means of connecting can be used as long as the crossbar is fixed firmly in place after assembly. Turning now to FIG. 12, the cross connector (13) is shown being connected to the crossbar (9) which is already connected to the base (5). In the preferred embodiment a wrench (24) can be used to engage connection means such as the bolt (22), lock washer (20), washer (21), connector openings (14), and nut (19) to ensure that the cross connector (13) is securely fastened to the cross bars (9). Turning now to FIG. 13 the back (2) is being placed onto the base (5) with the slots (4) enveloping the flanges (6). In the preferred embodiment an internal locking mechanism springs into place to hold the back (2) securely onto the base (5) when the flange openings (7) have reached a certain depth inside the slots (4). This can be done with spring locking mechanisms well known to the art such as the ones having a spring loaded ball bearing partially protruding from a hole on the flange that is pushed in by the slot walls until the ball has reached a recess in the slot walls that allows it to spring out and effectuate the lock. Various such lock mechanisms are available and it is not important to the inventive concept describe herein which is used. Turning now to FIG. 14 threaded rods (23) are screwed into bore boles (3) located on the back (2) and base (5). Turning to FIG. 15, bore holes (3) on the arms (8) are placed over the threaded rods (23) that have been screwed into the back (2) and base (5). Inset at FIG. 16 is a view showing how a lower zipper opening (25) in the fabric covering the arm (8) permits access by which connector means can be used to fasten the arms onto the base and back assembly. In the preferred embodiment those connector means can include a washer (21), a lock washer (20), and a nut (19). Inset at FIG. 17 is a view showing now an upper zipper opening (26) in the fabric covering the arm (8) permits access by which connector means can be used to fasten the arms onto the base and back assembly. In the preferred embodiment those connector means can include a washer a lock washer (20), and a nut (19). The upper and lower zipper opening may be the same opening it, for example, it is one long zipper opening extending the length of an arm. Turning now to FIG. 18 the manner of connecting the support leg (15) and the fact (17) is shown. They attach to the underside of the base (5). After these items are attached, the assembly can be turned face up and placed on the floor as the sofa (1) seen in FIG. 1.

Claims

1. A sofa kit having a back, a base, a plurality of arms, a support leg, feet, and connection means: said back having a lowest surface;said base having a plurality of cross braces, a top, an inside, a bottom, and a cross connector;said cross braces being detachably attachable to said base on said inside using said connection means;said cross connector being detachably attachable to said cross braces using said connection means;said support leg being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means;said feet being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means;said arms being detachably attachable to said base using said connection means;said arms being detachably attachable to said back using said connection means;said lowest surface being attachable to said top using said connection means.

2. The sofa kit of claim 1 having a covering enveloping said arms, said covering having an opening that can be closed by a zipper.

3. The sofa kit of claim 1 having slots on said lowest surface and flanges on said top and a locking mechanism holding said back on said base when said flanges are inserted in said slots.

4. The sofa kit of claim 3 further comprising first sides on said back, second sides on said base, and third sides on said arms; wherein said first sides, said second sides, and said third sides have holes and said holes will admit threaded rods which cooperate with said connection means in the construction of said sofa kit.

5. The sofa kit of claim 4 having a covering enveloping said arms, said covering having an opening that can be closed by a zipper.

6. A method of storing a sofa kit comprising the steps of providing a back, a base, a plurality of arms, a support leg, feet, a box, and connection means; said back having a lowest surface; said base having a plurality of cross braces, a top, an inside, a bottom, and a cross connector; said cross braces being detachably attachable to said base on said inside using said connection means; said cross connector being detachably attachable to said cross braces using said connection means; said support leg being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means; said feet being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means; said arms being detachably attachable to said base using said connection means; said arms being detachably attachable to said back using said connection means; said lowest surface being attachable to said top using connection means;detaching at least one of said cross connectors from said inside;placing at least said arms in said inside; andplacing said back, said base, said plurality of arms, said support leg, said feet, and said connection means inside said box.

7. The method of storing a sofa kit of claim 6 in which said support leg, said feet, said connection means, said cross braces, and said cross connector are placed in said inside; and said back is placed substantially parallel with said base prior to placing them inside said box.

8. A sofa kit having a back, a base, a plurality of arms, a support leg, feet, and connection means; said back having a lowest surface;said base having a plurality of cross braces, a top, an inside, a bottom, and a cross connector;said cross braces being detachably attachable to said base on said inside using said connection means;said cross connector being detachably attachable to said cross braces using said connection means;said support leg being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means;said feet being detachably attachable to said bottom using said connection means;said arms being detachably attachable to said base using said connection means;said arms being detachably attachable to said back using said connection means;slots on said lowest surface and flanges on said top; anda locking mechanism holding said back on said as when said flanges are inserted in said slots.

9. The sofa kit of claim 7 in which said connection means are substantially rod shaped and are threaded.

10. The sofa kit of claim 8 further comprising first sides on said back, second sides on said base, and third sides on said arms; wherein said first sides, said second sides, and said third sides have holes and said holes will admit said connection means in the construction of said sofa kit.

11. The sofa kit of claim 9 having a covering enveloping said arms, said covering having an opening that can be closed by a zipper.
