Claims
- 1. Method for forming a substantially non-toxic composite denture of improved physical characteristics comprising:
- (a) lining a curable acrylate polymer denture base material with a denture liner material comprising a phosphonitrilic fluoroelastomer and an interpenetrating C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl methacrylate monomer composition curable at a temperature of 100.degree. C. or less under atmospheric pressure; and
- (b) subjecting the lined denture base material to a temperature of about 100.degree. C. or less at atmospheric pressure to concurrently cure the denture liner material and denture base material and to bond them together to form a composite denture.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein the fluoroelastomer is characterized by a plurality of repeating units of the formula ##STR6## wherein n is 3, 5, 7, 9 or 11, and m is between 10,000 and 50,000.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition includes a glycol ester of dimethacrylic acid as a cross-linking agent.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the interpenetrating monomer is methyl methacrylate monomer.
- 5. The method of claim 1 wherein the fluoroelastomer composition includes a free-radical initiator and an acid scavenger for the fluoroelastomer.
- 6. The method of claim 4 wherein the glycol is polyethylene glycol, 1,6-hexamethylene glycol, ethylene glycol, or tetraethylene glycol.
- 7. The method of claim 5 wherein the free-radical initiator is benzoyl peroxide or lauroyl peroxide, and the acid scavenger is magnesium oxide.
- 8. The method of claim 1 wherein the composition further includes a filler.
- 9. The method of claim 3 wherein the cross-linking agent is ethylene glycol dimethacrylate.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein an acrylic monomer is applied between the liner material and denture bases material prior to curing.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein the denture base material is poly(methyl methacrylate) denture base dough.
- 12. The invention of claim 8 wherein the filler is radiopaque.
- 13. The invention of claim 8 wherein the filler is barium sulfate.
- 14. The invention of claim 8 further including a pigment.
- 15. The method of claim 8, wherein the filler comprises particles of a hard acrylic resin.
- 16. The method of claim 15, wherein the composition includes a glycol ester of dimethacrylic acid as a cross-linking agent.
- 17. A composite denture produced by the method of claim 1.
- 18. The composite denture of claim 17 wherein the denture base material is a poly(methyl methacrylate) denture base dough.
