Claims
- 1. A soft-sided carrying case comprising:
a primary compartment, the primary compartment including a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall and a bottom wall, a first one of the sidewalls and a second one of the sidewalls each including an extended portion; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, one of the sidewalls of the first upper compartment being contiguous with and formed by the extended portion of the first sidewall of the primary compartment, the extended portion of the first sidewall defining a first hinge line generally adjacent to an interface defined between the primary compartment and the first upper compartment, the first hinge line permitting the first upper compartment to pivot about the first hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position; and a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, one of the sidewalls of the second upper compartment being contiguous with and formed by the extended portion of the second sidewall of the primary compartment, the extended portion of the second sidewall defining a second hinge line generally adjacent to an interface defined between the primary compartment and the second upper compartment, the second hinge line permitting the second upper compartment to pivot about the second hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position.
- 2. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, including a releasable closure engaging the first and second upper compartments for maintaining the first and second upper compartments in their respective closed positions.
- 3. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 2, wherein the closure includes at least one strap.
- 4. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 3, wherein the strap includes a releasable fastener, and wherein the releasable fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, velcro, buckles and zippers.
- 5. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein the primary compartment includes a closing flap.
- 6. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 5, wherein the closing flap is secured in a closed position by a releasable fastener, and wherein the releasable fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, velcro, buckles and zippers.
- 7. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein each of the upper compartments includes a closing flap, at least a portion of the closing flap of each upper compartment being disposed generally adjacent to the primary compartment when the respective upper compartment is in the folded position.
- 8. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 7, wherein the closing flap of each of the upper compartments is secured in a closed position by a fastener, and wherein the fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, velcro, and zippers.
- 9. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 7, wherein the closing flap of each of the upper compartments is defined at least in part by the bottom wall of the respective upper compartment.
- 10. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein the carrying case includes a pair of wheels and an extendible handle.
- 11. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 10, wherein the carrying case includes at least one extendable cord having a portion adapted for securement to the extendible handle, the extendible cord and the handle cooperating to define a space sized to receive a parcel.
- 12. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein the extended portion of the first sidewall and the extended portion of the second sidewall include a flexible portion, first and second hinge lines being defined exclusively by their respective flexible portions.
- 13. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein the first and second hinge lines are defined by a line of stitching.
- 14. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second upper compartments includes a releasable connection disposed generally adjacent to its respective hinge line, thereby permitting the at least one upper compartment to be removed.
- 15. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 1, wherein the first and second upper compartments are releasably attached to the main compartment, thereby permitting the upper compartments to be removed.
- 16. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 15, wherein the first and second upper compartments each include a fastener, and further wherein upon removal of the first and second upper compartments the first upper compartment and the second upper compartment may be releasably fastened to each other.
- 17. The carrying case of claim 1, including a handle operatively engaging the primary compartment for carrying the soft-sided carrying case.
- 18. A soft-sided carrying case comprising:
a lower compartment, the lower compartment including a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall and a bottom wall; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall; a first hinge pivotally joining the first upper compartment to the lower compartment along a first hinge line, the first hinge permitting the first upper compartment to pivot about the first hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position; a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall; and a second hinge pivotally joining the second upper compartment to the lower compartment along a second hinge line, the second hinge permitting the second upper compartment to pivot about the second hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position.
- 19. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, including a closure mechanism engaging the first and second upper compartments for maintaining the first and second upper compartments in their respective closed positions.
- 20. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 19, wherein the closure mechanism includes a releasable fastener, and wherein the releasable fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, velcro, buckles and zippers.
- 21. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein at least one of the sidewalls of each of the first and second upper compartments is secured to at least one adjacent sidewall of the lower compartment by a releasable fastener, thereby permitting each of the upper compartments to be secured in their respective closed positions.
- 22. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein the primary compartment and the first and second upper compartments each include includes a closing flap.
- 23. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 22, wherein each of the closing flaps are secured in a closed position by a releasable fastener, and wherein the releasable fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, velcro, buckles and zippers.
- 24. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein the carrying case includes a pair of wheels and an extendible handle.
- 25. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 24, wherein the carrying case includes at least one extendable cord, the extendable cord having a portion adapted for securement to the extendable handle, the extendable cord and the handle cooperating to define a space sized to receive a parcel.
- 26. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein a first sidewall of the primary compartment extends to form a first sidewall of the first upper compartment, and wherein a second sidewall of the primary compartment extends to form a first sidewall of the second upper compartment, and wherein the first hinge and the second hinge are defined exclusively by flexible portions of the first sidewall and the second sidewall, respectively.
- 27. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein a first sidewall of the primary compartment intersects a first sidewall of the first upper compartment at the first hinge, and wherein the first hinge is defined exclusively by a first line of stitching.
- 28. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 27, wherein a second sidewall of the primary compartment intersects a first sidewall of the second upper compartment at the second hinge, and wherein the second hinge is defined exclusively by a second line of stitching.
- 29. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein at least one of the first hinge and the second hinge is releasable, thereby permitting a corresponding one of the first upper compartment and the second upper compartment to be removed.
- 30. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 18, wherein the first hinge and the second hinge are releasable, thereby permitting the first and second upper compartments to be removed, and further including joining means carried by at least one of the first and second upper compartments for joining the first and second upper compartments to each other after removal thereof.
- 31. A soft-sided carrying case having a handle and comprising:
a lower compartment, the lower compartment including a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall and a bottom wall; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, the first upper compartment meeting the lower compartment along a first line of intersection; a first hinge defined at the first line of intersection upon pivoting the first upper compartment along the first line of intersection, the first hinge thereby permitting pivotal movement of the first upper compartment between a folded position and an unfolded position; a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, the second upper compartment meeting the lower compartment along a second line of intersection; and a second hinge defined at the second line of intersection upon pivoting the second upper compartment along the second line of intersection, the second hinge thereby permitting pivotal movement of the second upper compartment between a folded position and an unfolded position.
- 32. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 31, including means for securing the first and second upper compartments in their respective folded positions.
- 33. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 31, wherein each of the primary compartment and the first a d second upper compartments includes a closeable flap, each of the closeable flaps being concealed when the first and second upper compartments are in their respective folded positions.
- 34. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 31, including a third upper compartment, the third upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, the third upper compartment meeting the lower compartment along a third line of intersection; and
a third hinge defined at the third line of intersection upon pivoting the third upper compartment along the third line of intersection, the third hinge thereby permitting pivotal movement of the third upper compartment between a folded position and an unfolded position.
- 35. A soft-sided carrying case having a handle and comprising:
a lower compartment, the lower compartment including a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall and a bottom wall; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, the first upper compartment meeting the lower compartment along a first line of intersection; a first hinge defined at the first line of intersection upon pivoting the first upper compartment along the first line of intersection, the first hinge thereby permitting pivotal movement of the first upper compartment between a folded position overlying the lower compartment and an unfolded position; a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having a plurality of sidewalls, a top wall, and a bottom wall, the second upper compartment meeting the first upper compartment along a second line of intersection; and a second hinge defined at the second line of intersection upon pivoting the second upper compartment along the second line of intersection, the second hinge thereby permitting pivotal movement of the second upper compartment between a folded position overlying the first upper compartment and an unfolded position.
- 36. A soft-sided carrying case comprising:
a lower compartment, the lower compartment including a top wall, a bottom wall, and a surrounding sidewall; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having an upper wall, a lower wall, and a surrounding sidewall; a first fabric hinge pivotally joining the first upper compartment to the lower compartment along a first hinge line; a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having an upper wall, a lower wall, and a surrounding sidewall; a second fabric hinge pivotally joining the second upper compartment to the lower compartment along a second hinge line; and at least one reinforcement member applied adjacent to each of the first and second fabric hinges, each reinforcement member engaging the lower compartment and an adjacent one of the first and second upper compartments.
- 37. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 36, wherein the at least one reinforcement member comprises a sewn in place fabric strap.
- 38. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 36, wherein the at least one reinforcement member comprises a fabric strap secured by a fastener, and wherein the fastener includes an item selected from the group consisting of snaps, buttons, hook and loop closures, rivets, and zippers.
- 39. A soft-sided carrying case comprising:
a lower compartment, the lower compartment including a top wall, a bottom wall, and an encircling sidewall; a first upper compartment, the first upper compartment having an upper wall, a lower wall, and an encircling sidewall; a first hinge pivotally joining the first upper compartment to the lower compartment along a first hinge line, the first hinge permitting the first upper compartment to pivot about the first hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position; a second upper compartment, the second upper compartment having an upper wall, a lower wall, and an encircling sidewall: a second hinge pivotally joining the second upper compartment to the lower compartment along a second hinge line, the second hinge permitting the second upper compartment to pivot about the second hinge line between a folded position and an unfolded position; and each of the first and second hinges including at least one sewn in place fabric strap, the fabric strap including a first edge engaging the lower compartment and a second edge engaging an adjacent one of the first or the second upper compartments, and further wherein the first edge of each strap is engaged by a lower overlapping member secured to the lower compartment, and wherein the second edge of each strap is engaged by an upper overlapping member secured to the upper compartment.
- 40. The soft-sided carrying case of claim 39, wherein the overlapping members are secured to the strap by bartack stitching.
