Claims
- 1. A soil compaction apparatus, comprising:
- a compactor mass;
- a transport device rotatably supporting the compactor mass for the compactor mass to apply a plurality of periodic impact blows to a soil surface by rolling the compactor mass over the soil surface;
- a sensor attached to the compactor mass and transmitting a mass-acceleration-signal representing a varying acceleration of the compactor mass, due to the plurality of periodic impact blows of at least one portion of the compactor mass against the soil surface while the compactor mass is rotated over the soil surface; and
- a processor in communication with the sensor and transforming the mass-acceleration-signal into a plurality of data representing a level of compaction of the soil surface.
- 2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compactor mass has a multi-sided shape.
- 3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compactor mass has a polygonal shape.
- 4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compactor mass has a pentagonal shape.
- 5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises at least one accelerometer.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the accelerometer is mounted to an axle supporting the compactor mass.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the compactor mass is shaped to alternately rise up on an outer portion of the compactor mass that is in contact with the soil surface and then fall downwardly to impact the soil surface.
- 8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the sensor comprises one accelerometer for each at least one portion of the compactor mass.
- 9. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a display attached to the soil compaction apparatus and in communication with the processor to receive the plurality of data representing the level of compaction of the soil surface.
- 10. The apparatus of claim 9, further comprising a second display, at a remote location from the soil compaction apparatus, in communication with the processor to receive the plurality of data representing the level of compaction of the soil surface.
- 11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a receiver attached to the soil compaction apparatus and in communication with the processor, the receiver receiving a compactor-position-signal representing a locational position of the soil compactor apparatus, the processor transforming the compactor-position-signal into a second plurality of data.
- 12. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a memory in communication with the processor, the processor storing the second plurality of data and the plurality of data representing the level of compaction of the soil surface in the memory in a correlated fashion.
- 13. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a signal device attached to the soil compacting apparatus, the signal device generating an operational-signal when the movement of the soil compacting apparatus on a compaction site is in accordance with predetermined criteria.
- 14. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a second sensor attached to the soil compacting apparatus and in communication with the processor, the second sensor generating an apparatus-velocity-signal representing a velocity of the soil compaction apparatus, the processor transforming the apparatus-velocity-signal into a third plurality of data.
- 15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising a memory in communication with the processor, the processor storing the third plurality of data, the second plurality of data, and the plurality of data representing the level of compaction of the soil surface in the memory in a correlated fashion.
- 16. The apparatus of claim 15, further comprising an interface in communication with the processor and capable of transmitting the plurality of data, the second plurality of data, and the third plurality of data from the memory to a device compatible with the interface.
